*censored* 75s
on: March 11, 2013, 21:02:25 PM
My S is hopefully going to a new owner this month, so we're looking for a car that has to be:

a) Ridiculously spacious
b) Cheap as chips
c) Comfy
d) Not slow

It looks like the best fit is gonna be a R**** 75 because they fit all of those requirements - is dev still around? I want the 2.5 v6 but realistically the 2.0 Diesel is gonna be the best lump, innit? Is it worth getting an MG, and what should I be checking when I'm looking at one? I've never bought a Diesel before :/
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I'm a bit out of the loop but I had an R75 for a while.

They are excellent cars imo, probably the nicest car I've driven.

The car itself is very solid, well designed and reliable with very few common problems. It was developed with BMW's money and help.

The 2.5 & 2.0 v6 probably has the least issues, with the only ones being the inlet manifold has an electronic valves that open and close to adjust the length of the inlet at certain revs to improve torque and power (VIS), they can fail, quite hugely with bits of plastic getting sucked into the engine so not good, tell tale signs of this are a rattle at certain revs and a flat spot in acceleration.
Cambelts are an expensive job as there is 4 of them and they are right in down there and take a lot of hours to do (£500+), its also thirsty and quite expensive on the tax iirc

The diesel is the BMW m47 unit and also is pretty bullet proof, comes in 115 and 135ps versions and is quite tunable, chain driven. Only issues I have read about is dual mass fly wheel's having to be done with the clutch and injector leak back problems causing poor hot starting. The in tank fuel pump can fail causing power loss at below 1/4 full tank putting more strain on main pump so check that, not an expensive job to replace.

the 1.8 k-series is under quite abit of strain in a heavy car like this and is probably best avoiding unless you find one that has the latest MLS head gasket and uprated oil rail and is perfect.

The compartment that houses the ecu can flood if the drains block and kills the ecu so that is worth checking right away.

check the radiator fan kicks in its an overly complicated system and can fail, it should kick in as soon as AC is switched on.

The top of the range model is the connoisseur SE in pre face lift and contemporary se in post face lift. pre 2001 cars have a slightly higher spec due to cost saving drive.
I had a 2000 2.5v6 connoisseur SE and it was awesome.

The MG is the same car with half leather seats, no walnut wood, less chrome and a much sportier suspension/wheel setup.

have a browse through the forums at mg-rover.org that is the best site for info.

As Deviance has pointed out the Diesel (BMW) Rover 75, failing that do not rule out a Mondeo, it fits all of the criteria and they are cheap as chips, the Diesel Mondeos also can come with issues though, but petrol 2.0 pulls well enough, the 1.8 is a little underpowered but pulls ok, they are also cheaper on parts than the 75 and parts are more readily available 2nd hand.

The S has gone  :(

I looked at 3 75s but they were all munters and tbh looking at the narrow roads and parking around here probably a bit too big.

Got a Alfa 147 Lusso 2.0 in the end. I really wanted a Saab but didn't want to pay out for a good one.

A choice of Rover, Saab or Alfa, really!

PS I'm not going to push VW/Audi Group on him Soopah ;)

I would assume Alfa parts are harder to get hold of, i know all i have on the shelf is the odd taillight and maybe a wing mirror.

I've had a few VWs as company cars and they are well overrated imo. I wouldn't say no to a Corrado VR6 mind.

Bugger the alfa radios. I'm looking at changing the stock hu and you can't just go buy the bits, no. You gotta pull the hu first because apparently the wiring is a bit on the random side.
