Disc brake problem...
on: May 28, 2006, 22:40:53 PM
Ive nearly finished refurbin my bike: new wheels, BB, crankset etc. but the problem is my Hope XC4 disc brake (on a Pace RC36 fork) is catching the spokes on the front wheel...

I was using a Hope Sport Hub before and now i am using a Surly hub... this is obviously the problem, is there anyway i can get round it? The mono caliper on the back is smaller in terms of dimensions than the XC4, so i dont get this problem with with the rear wheel.

Cheers

Dan.

Id have to see a picture, but it sounds like it could be resolved with either dishing or axle and spacer issues. Make sure that the wheel is perfectly installed, then measure from the rim to the inside of the fork to look for poor dish. A mm or so on most disc brakes aint going to make much of a difference, but if its biased towards the caliper--bingo.

If its only 0.5mm or so on a new build, the spokes might be bowing a bit, and could use destressing--but thats sort of a religious issue. I use the handle of a large crescent wrench to do this. It bends the spokes around each other and also seats them in the hub flange giving you super durable wheels.

Build them up yourself?

and if thats the culprit, and you had them built at a shop, Id take the front back and be very cordial and ask if they can respacer the axle and adjust the  dish accordingly as it doesnt clear the pots. A reputable shop wont charge for this, but will try to make good.

Yeah, im thinking about that now, ive messed about with it and its not going to sort itself, other than to get the wheel re-configed... Unfortunately i bought the wheels from a shop 50miles away. :(
