£5k car
on: October 24, 2013, 18:26:37 PM
New car time again. I've got up to £5k - but thinking I might stick to £3k and have some spare cash for a change lol.

Looking at something sporty / coupe ish in looks.  Not an MX-5 fan, but seen a few TT's I like, Celica's, Hyundai Coupe's etc.. I'm more interested in something 'nice' though than fast and mental. My 2.0 Mondeo Zetec is absolutely quick enough, so I'm more interested in it looking nice with a decent interior. Not really into convertibles either. Would also consider a nice saloon as a totally different approach but I'd have to absolutely love it. If anyone wants to sell me an A5 for £5k though feel free :)

Whats your thoughts guys? I really wanted the Hyundai for the looks but my car friends have bitch slapped me for it!!

S5 all the way for a saloon, you won't get one for 5k though! ;D

I'd avoid the TT, I gather they are style over substance, you'd be better off sticking with somehing Jap if you want sporty and fun rather than necessarily fast, and overall reliable.

Stay away from the Hyundai, high priced servicing and parts for what is it, and you'll be lucky finding them in scrapyards for used parts.

If i were spending that sort of cash probably an E46 coupe, or Astra H Coupe.

Ok point taken on Hyundai as everyone says the same.

Still leaning towards a TT - style over drivability is kind of what I'm after to be honest. Not bothered if it's fun to drive really as long as it's no worse than my Mondeo - but  I love the Audi styling. It'll keep the missus happy too! Might pick an older one up for sub £3k and buy a fee new things for the house with the change.

Id discount this advice purely on the fact that i've driven one (3.2 DSG) and they're as good to drive as they look.

The thing to remember though, is that they're not arse out silly drivers cars, theyre torquey rather than high end powerband, they're solid rather than nimble. they're for getting up to speed and making progress rather than dancing round roundabouts looking out of the side window.

it depends on your definition of fun
.

also fwiw, early s2000s appear to be just about within reach.

so between the two droptops mentioned, you ought to be able to find something fun...

if you really like the TT you should test drive one.... but you should test drive a 3 series too tbh :-)

To be fair, the early one's were notoriuosly sh*te, I'm sure they are much better now :)

they were the 20vs which were an uninspiring drive.
and just to make sure its a measured response, i think any TT will likely be less than exciting. ive driven well built solid german cars for so long, i forget how lively a light car with a daft engine can be.

i dunno if i'd chance on a 5k boxster. likelihood is its gonna cost you the same again in the first years ownership just fixing it up. but thats about how well you know the buying process and how hands on you want to be if you buy a snotter happy that you might have to do some running repairs.

S2000 is a good call, don't expect to find many used bits though

Check out the road tax on these cars before you make a decision.
Some TT's are £300+ a year.

my 330d is 220 quid a year. the diffence is 2 quid a week. we're talking about a five k spend on a car, the difference in road tax is piffling in comparison.

what about an M3?

the E36 Evolution is supposed to be a right weapon.

That's a pretty retarded way of looking at it.  When the tax based on emissions was launched, some cars fell into the higher bracket.  A year or two newer, these cars are improved and the tax dropped.
Look at TT's.  Early ones hold their value.  Somewhat newer ones are cheap, then more recent ones are expensive.

Example.

1.8T 190bhp. 23 Mar 2006 - 24 Apr 2006 £475.00
2.0T 1 Sep 2006 - 25 May 2010 £220
