Im thinking of getting a newish car as i am now driving more miles to work each day but i cannot afford to buy one and i dont want to particularly get a loan out to buy one either,

you realise "finance" is just a posh word for a loan right?

I got a bank loan for my current car, shopped around a bit on the internet and was able to get one a LOT cheaper than the rip off finance offer the garage was trying to push. By all means let the garage tell you what they can offer, but its almost certain youll be able to beat it substantially by shopping around.

Also as said above having a loan which you paid back on time is GOOD for your credit history. It takes you from being an uncertain risk to being a good bet because you have a track record of paying up.
