Decided to take up Muay Thai....
on: October 12, 2010, 00:17:04 AM
So long as my knee copes with it (had a patella tendon injury two years ago).

Have got bored with just going to the gym and tbh... serious martial arts that involve actual competition against a fully resisting opponent seem to place a lot of emphasis on fitness so have started with Muay Thai, Ill hopefully take up Judo too later this year. Otherwise, if my knee gives me trouble again, Ill be doing regular boxing instead.

Muay Thai is fantastic for fitness. I took it up for a good couple of years and I was a lean mean fighting machine by the end of it. I dont get into fights, for the record, but I seriously enjoyed training..

Key thing to remember - keep your concentration while on the pads or you will be punched/kicked, which hurts lots   -)

Where you based Dave? I know of a few good trainers around the country...

Im down in London - went for my first session on Saturday. Am aiming to do it twice a week - have booked an appointment with my sports physician for next week to check my knee - am hoping that I dont have any issues as I really want to do Muay Thai and would also like to do Judo once a week too. If I get some problems then Ill have to switch to boxing I guess which also seems to provide a fairly awesome workout in addition to being fantastic for self defence.

Ive had to duck out of doing similar for a year, I was doing 2 years prior but then my knees went, had to do a lot of rehab physio which I will be seeing the end of before 2011, tbh boxing will be pretty demanding on your knees also :(

yeah this didnt end too well... or perhaps it did in a way - knee pain prompted another visit to sports doc who then sent me for an MRI with some injections thingie after the MRI I was referred back to the surgeon I first saw ref: my knee 3 years ago - I have a small cartilage tear - operation now booked for next Thursday!

Good thing is though that my knee has been dodgy for 3 year now, the operation has a 4-6 week recovery time (though will likely leave it a bit longer before going back to muay thai) but at least I might have finally got my knee sorted so Im able to go running etc.. again.

Thats what I had on both knees, its a nightmare but things could be a lot worse, Ive pretty much done mine now and tbh it feels a lot better, so it does work out well in the long term
