I'm going to slowly back away from this thread....as my Honda lunched it's timing chain at the weekend.

I'd have to agree with the sentiments of the this thread.  German cars have an undeserved reputation for being reliable.

The man who services my FTO was used to owning Jap cars, he's had all sorts, FTOs, Supras, RX7s etc.  He then bought a new 3 series coupe a few years ago.  Within the first year he had so many recurring issues that in the end he demanded they take it back and refund him.  And that's what they did.  He now drives a Yaris :D

I never had a single issue with my last FTO in nearly 5 years of ownership.  I took it from 60k to over 105k.  And I drove it hard!  Most days it saw 8,000rpm.  Fingers crossed Ron(My current FTO) serves me as well.

Dunno yet.  Dragged it back from London to Chesterfield, yet to let my mechanic have a look.
Even if there are no bent valves, the total repair bill for this is in excess of £2500, plus it needs a clutch and flywheel at a cost of £1800, it's sounding pretty terminal.

I don't understand why they don't make more cars with non-interferene engines when the timing belt goes. What are you going to replace it with soopah?

I dunno yet.  I was initially thinking another Accord before this happened, but now I'm not keen.
Don't really want German as they are boring as hell, apart from large engined BMW's.

I'm looking at 06/56 plate Alfa 156 JTD's mostly.

Hi All,

Last i knew Alfa's are riddled with electrical problems!  I had one a few years back as a pool car at work I took out on occasions and i had to get RAC out to it once and they said yeah every report of a alpha we get is electrical related.

I've always had fords so far not had any real problems to speak off.  best one I've probably had was a 2006 1.6TDCi 5dr Focus LX i think it was. in Tonic colour, really liked the colour and it was averaging between 50-55mpg most of the time.  I sold it in the end as the value of the car was plummeting more than i thought it had.  I ten got a 2011 Focus - oh i wish i never bothered - a complete waste of money and time - it had no end of problems.  I bought it with just over 2k miles on it (it came from jersey) so i thought ah not bad, low miles, hasn't been thrashed as can only do 40mph tops over there.  but oh dear - it went in twice for loud knock at the rear when i had to brake hard on occasions, there was very poor acceleration in 1st gear when i collected it but next day it didn't seem as bad but it always left me thinking if i needed to move fast, would the car actually go or not, heated front screen packed up (they had to fit a whole new windscreen - done by a contracted company - only for them NOT to set the wipers properly so when i drove home and it started raining, wipers only went half way across drivers side of the windscreen so had to take it back), only did a small sections, alarm went off when we had heat wave just randomly (they had it a week to fix this issue), both front doors needed new electric motors (passenger one just stopped working completely, drivers one went down ok but struggled to go back up.

All in all about ever 2 months it was going back to dealership to get fixed.  All the issues were fixed under warranty but i recently sold it as the warranty runs out on that car next year and I just had a feeling i would be forever putting my hand in my pocket with it.

Looking online there was a lot of reports of similar issues for the 2011 model cars as these wer the first ones produced, i thought about getting a newer model where i believe these issues are now fixed but i just wasn't' sure so in the end I didn't.
