Buying a Mk3 Astra? (1.7 TD)
on: April 19, 2006, 20:45:02 PM
I think someone on here had one once (binary shadow?)... Im thinking of getting one (need something economical on fuel) to run about in while i finish the apprenticeship, as the Woo is a lot thirstier than most comparable cars.

I was wondering if anyone had some pointers of what to look out for?

Expecting some input from Soopah here

yeah get one with the isuzu engine, the vauxhall one is crap!

also with astras i find they go on forever so as long as its not breaking in half from rust you should be ok

Diesels aint my bag, baby.

Get one in good nick, both external and engine, then pick up a complete sport or gsi interior for around £40.

Bargain.

Yeah, the one Im looking at is a 95 LS, with an Isuzu lump - 135,000 miles

looks pretty clean around the arches, which as per usual is the soft spot for Vauxhalls of more than a few years old

And Soopah Im way ahead of you RE the interior! :D

Might look for a set of GSI bumpers, or anything colour coded with fogs lol... GSI bonnet would be funky too, but it would be a bit of a joke on a gutless Diesel lump.

Twas me I had a 94 1.7TD Astra.

As Binary said get the Isuzu thats what I had and had no problems with it really.  The only problem I had was that we thought the injectors where shot, from cold the engine would struggle to start.  Often Id have to try the ignition up to half a dozen times before the engine would actually kick in and start.  Theyd done nearly 200,000 miles so that was probably why.  It might have passed its MOT this time but we felt it wouldnt next year so replaced it with a Fiesta.  Was getting about 40mpg out of it though which I didnt think was bad at all.

Paid £300 for it, had it for about 18 months then part exd it for £200, was a good car I still like it.

my dad had one untila couple of months back (in fact its still up the drive).  Not fast, but bloody good on fuel.  The 1.7 Izuzu is a damned good engine TBH.
