Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 20, 2008, 21:16:55 PM
My 2000 2.5 V6 TDI Passat has just died.. was doing 60-70 and went to change gear and the engine cut out, tried to restart and its just cranking over and over. Did have a message on the display and the glow plug light on when i was coasting something about management but didnt get the whole message, wasnt on for long.

The recovery guy reckons it might be the crank sensor.

The cambelt should have loads of miles and time left before it goes.

Im at a loss, probably going to have to get it looked at but thought id fish for ideas/suggestions, so... got any?

Cheers

ive heard the connector plug can work off the diesel pump on these engines, worth a look.

I had strnge problems with my 96 passat 1.9 TDI when my alternator started to hav bad brushes, ABS and belt light lit up clock went to zero and tripmeter zeroed.
Crank sensor seems possible but check chip box for bad earthing.
If it cranks over easier than normal like spinning faster than normal it still could be cambelt.

Post by: knighty on January 20, 2008, 21:36:18 PM
did it spin ok when you spun it ?

if it sounded normal then its (most lightly) not going to be any of the importnat belts...

...but to me, it happening when you changed gear points to belts :(

Post by: Binary Shadow on January 20, 2008, 21:38:42 PM
theres no rattles or bangs or anything, just seems a little quicker when spinning over but that could be my imagination

When you attempt to crank is there any smell of fuel from the exhaust, or if you slacken off one of the injectors is any bleeding out?

Welcome to the world of stupid electronic control on diesels.

Electronics - what makes diesels unreliable.

Id suggest you get a VAGCOM cable and software from wherever. Youre going to need it.

Have you had a good check over of it yet?

I had cam gear go on a volvo and it spun like a sewingmachine when I cranked.
Title: Re:Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 21, 2008, 08:45:28 AM
not had a chance to have a look yet, going to try getting tomorrow off to check it out

had a think and what happened was.. doing 60 in 4th, full throttle and thought i hit the rev limiter so changed to 5th, that was when i noticed the engine wasnt running :( so no idea yet, will check injectors for fuel and belt etc when i can.
Title: Re:Car just died!
Post by: filbert on January 21, 2008, 12:22:49 PM
Could be many things, Id be worried about the belt, you say plenty of time and miles to go but, when was it done, what was done, water pump? guide? tensioner? Injection pump belt? And by who!
VW recommend, check at 20,000miles, replace at 80,000miles or 4 years if mileage not reached.
Title: Car just died!
Post by: knighty on January 22, 2008, 00:49:12 AM
so it probably happend before you changed gear then ?

guessing you can take it past 60 in 4th and that the loss of power you thought was the rev limiter was actually the enging cutting out ?
Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 22, 2008, 11:01:47 AM
yeah the engine cut out before i put the clutch in for a gear change, there should have been some revs left before the limiter

coming to you live now from.... outside my house.

Got a bunch of covers off and can see that the cambelt, injector pump belt and aux belt all look fine, can see diesel in a clear pipe that was covered before, just taken the battery off in a futile attempt to reset whatever is running the thing but im out of ideas really, going to crack off an injector and see if its fueling in a bit
Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 22, 2008, 11:42:39 AM
unbolted one of the injectors and it dribbled onto the camcover when i turned it over, not sure whats normal there tho

im all out of ideas now :(
Title: Car just died!
Post by: filbert on January 22, 2008, 15:13:56 PM
sounds good that no belts have gone,
you should get more than a dribble, from the injector pipes, if the pressures low check filter and pump.
If its electrics your going to need a scanner or vagcom.

iv just dropped the key off at a garage down the road, they are going to tow it in and plug it in to their computer

diagnosis, injector pump, they want £870+ VAT and fitting... im getting the car towed back
Title: Re:Car just died!
Post by: Mark on January 23, 2008, 13:25:58 PM
Get it repaired. Place local to me does rebuilds for about £100. There is most likely something simple wrong with it, but because they are sh*tty fitters and not mechanics, they dont know how to do anything other than to replace parts.

Do be aware that if you attempt to reinstall it yourself you will need to make sure it is correctly timed. Get the appropriate timing kit.

Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 23, 2008, 13:32:32 PM
yeah i just had a read and realised itd have to be timed or it wouldnt run, £100 nice, apparently they are prone to a wire burning out in them, dunno need to get it off and looked at 1st

yeah that crossed my mind too.

is it an inevitable thing on these?
Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 26, 2008, 21:44:08 PM
not sure, but feels like it might be, more electronics than mechanical tho, which sucks since itd probably go forever without that
Title: Re:Car just died!
Post by: Mark on January 26, 2008, 22:01:47 PM
Too right. Just rolled over 400,000 miles on a ZX derv here - on original pump. On original everything except brakes and handbrake cable, and a few bushes and a suspension arm. Still does near 60mpg. Its been running on veg oil last 120,000 miles. Its used as a van.

Modern diesel is nowhere near as reliable as last gen. NOWHERE near. Electronics have made diesel unreliable.

Still think thats a balls that it failed with so few miles - they must be weak, or the fuel your local station is dishing out must be pure sh*te. My guess is this is why this particular type of VAG engined car is so easy bought - I do remember the pumps on these being a piece of sh*t on the older audis.

Post by: Binary Shadow on January 26, 2008, 22:11:39 PM
my gut said that if i unplugged the electronics it might have run but then some other electronics would probably have stopped it

Got a solution for you. Ive just bought one to put in the 924 (The audi engine was just too small...)

http://britishamericanengines.co.uk/gm_create_engines.asp

I went for the 330hp LS1 - Ill probably be looking at turbocharging it (x2)

Post by: Binary Shadow on January 26, 2008, 23:18:22 PM
LOLz, i bet it wont do 40+mpg tho
Title: Re:Car just died!

Title: Car just died!

gone for a 2nd hand unit from ebay, probably not the wisest thing to do but its allegedly only done 42k miles and is in excellent condition, i will be the judge of that tho

0470506002 AFB motor

0470506006 AKN motor

the 02 more common in vw with same engine as in audi I belive.

From one page:
Seems to be very similar especially as the 06 is in parateses just after 02 !!! From this page http://www.alleautoteile.at/shop/search2.jsp?Search=einspritzpumpe+audi+a8 see if you can see any difference in the pictures of the two.

bugger, hope that an 06 will work in place of an 02, bet it probably wont now :(

one of those engines came in a year before the other, I cant remember which though. you might get away with it alright. Sometimes changing pumps its only a matter of changing a few things to make it suit.

and the AFB engines (can even be in your manual).

iv looked in the handbook (dont have a proper service manual as the damn haynes doesnt cover the V6 at all)

Been googling and found nothing, the V6s werent shipped to the states so theres little noise about them, been posting on VW/Audi forums for more info, hopefully itll turn some up.

my handbook tells enginecodes it is also in your boot on a white sticker near the sparewheel.

or just call VAG :)

sounds strange, how can an injector pump kill an engine? where is the oil coming from?

have you checked operation of the in tank pump, that failing is usually what causes the main pump to frazzle.
Title: Car just died!
Post by: Binary Shadow on January 30, 2008, 18:17:31 PM
appears to be the in tank pump as mentioned above, getting no fuel to the front of the car.

also looks like i was mistaken, its a puddle of coolent oil and diesel mixed, not just oil

Well its been in my mates mates garage for best part of 4 weeks, the pump that i bought is NBG so they sent my old one off to be fixed £550 + a days labour (not bad considering its been in there for so long) its looking like circa £1k to fix it, then i need to MOT it as that runs out in days.. this thing will be the death of me!
