Laughable, when will you morons realise these are just scams! they are not exclusive in any way shape or form! These rallies are ten a penny now (and have been for a while, except more and more are jumping on the bandwagon for a quick buck)

They just serve as a tool to make a stack load of cash for the organisers for doing very little other than planning a route, driving along, then going shopping and spending the £6250 (minimum in this case, ive seen other rallies rake in 15k+) of your money.

If you want to go on a rally and earn some cash for charity or whatever, just do your own euro trip, just randomly mash some pushpins into a map of europe, now thats hardcore.

Think outside the box bitches

staples to napels is the best banger run, the organisers put alot of effort into it.

Had a couple of mates that did it in a £50 allegro last year.

Anyone would for the £15k minimum profit they made.
(interesting how previous years teams lists have dissapeared, lets just say they had well over 100 teams @ £150 min per car - only 2 people)

ITS FOR CHARITY!

sure it is...

(the individual teams however DO raise money for charity)

Yes I have the travel monopoly!

I am going to treat this as my holiday next year! as I havnt had a holiday for about 4 or 5 years!!

So I will be very disapointed if you drop out!! /me scowels

What I need from the each of you that want to come, Knighty, Sara, and Eru... I need some money from you each asap.

£31.25 as if we have 4 people (me inc) its £125 / 4 to enter, which is £31.25 I can accept paypal (or nochex at the same address) to mr_roll@fya-lan.co.uk or bank transfer, either way this will be the only thing youll need to pay for for a while.

Im unsure at the amount of money well need to put aside for petrol, although I am thinking of trying to get Shell as a sponsor, maybe BP would.

Who knows, Ill sort that tomorrow, however we have just over 7 months for all of us to save up!

But first, send me that money Alan (knighty) has my telephone number so get it off him if needs be.

Id appreciate the money soon, I could also take a cheque I suppose, but thats just slow but either way, Ill pay and just need you all to send me £31.25 :)

I was also thinking, we might be able to get a company to sponsor us with some TFTs for the interior of the car... I know a local company that could do them... But sh*t any more ideas please fire them into the topic!

I dont think thats a fair comparison.

the XUD engine, if Im right was used by 2 manufacturers while the renault engines in the Volvos were only used in Volvos as far as Im aware.

Its also a space issue, Volvos, Id imagine have more. and engine size

But Id appreciate a list of cars you think we should look out for, which car would you buy.

Ill be saving up and I think at the end of Jan going to a local Auction or 2 to find one :)
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: Mark on December 21, 2006, 23:43:37 PM
The renault engine was also used in renaults?

Engine size is irrelevant - the XUD will last longer, and be more economical.

There is more passenger space and comfort (IMO) in a xantia, 405, CX, XM (God, especially a CX), etc etc than a 240. My grandfather had a 240 back in 86

Get anything with a good diesel engine in it - you have a greater choice of fuel then

I think well deffo. need an estate for the 4 of us and all our stuff !

p.s. theres months and months before we need a car anyway !

p.p.s. power is nice, but we dont want to spend five times what the car cost just on fuel... well hardly notice the power output of the engine on the motorway anyway :)

....anyway.... would be more in feel with the rally if it struggled up every hill ;)

I need some help with some maths..

In my old Volvo 2.0L GL I did a ~800 mile round trip. I filled the tank 4 times, at a cost of around £45 per fillup.

So £180 for petrol cost.

What did it cost per mile? I get 22.5ppm

Title: Crum Ball Rally
Post by: Leon on January 02, 2007, 23:22:49 PM
How many Ltrs the tank hold?

edit: ignour me I thought you wanted MPG :)

your Calcs are correct methinks
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: mr_roll on January 02, 2007, 23:58:41 PM
So between 4 of us we need to put aside about £900 for petrol if I get us a 2.3 I think (I think about 30ppm over 3000 miles)

The actual rally is just under 2000 miles, but we do have to get to france 1st.

So £225 each for petrol.

I think it might be a good idea if each of us set up a bank account and put £10 a week from now until the event and then they can use that for petrol.

I could set up a bank account and we could all pay into that.

Alan and Sara what do you think ?

Post by: knighty on January 03, 2007, 01:12:31 AM
wtf ?
im to drunk to do the maths
but 30ppm is way way off !

edit:

petrol at 90p/liter
aprox 5 liters in a gallon so £4.50 a gallon
at 45mpg thats 10p/mile ?
at 23mpg thats 20p/mile ?
at 11mpg thats 40p/mile ?

its about 15mpg for 30p/mile ?

SCREW THAT !

were going to need something a bit more echonomical !

why not get a diesel ?

doesent drink it so bad when your caining it :)
Title: Crum Ball Rally
Post by: knighty on January 03, 2007, 10:41:36 AM
soubor now, and the maths look ok ?

we should get a diesel... my diesel 2.5l straight six used to get 18mpg at 130mpg.... 45+mpg was easy at 70mph

rough guess it was about 35mpg at 100mph.... which would more than half the fule cost ?
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: mr_roll on January 03, 2007, 15:16:37 PM
I dont think the diesel engines for cars of £200 are any better at economy than their petrol brothers.

Although what car did you have in mind ?

Im checking out the Volvo TDs

Forgot to say, I have looked at a few diesels, but they didnt seem right.

Hmm, I just realised we could use used chip oil possibly... as well as normal diesel if we got a diesel.

From what Ive heard its not that cheaper, suppose it would be noticeable over a 2000 mile journey.

Ive been offered a FREE Volvo!

So in about 3 - 4 weeks Ill be going to get that one way or another.

It does need some work and the guy will be using the interior from the car he is giving me and swapping it with his old interior, which is good as 1. I dont like leather and 2 I was going to re-upholster the interior in the car with Fur and Velvet, black and puprle :D

I know its a 700 Series Turbo, so either 2.0L or 2.3L.
Either way... If its a 2.3, it might be to much for petrol, but its free so :P

Love the idea of grim colours (though I vote turquoise and purple with pink flashes! Early-90s ski overall colours for teh win!) :D Less in love with the idea of sitting in a baking car on velvet and fur... Though maybe its preferable to sticky leather...

...so who wants to be our fourth, then? Come on!

Just done a bit of a deal... £200 for a 760 2.3 Turbo Auto Estate.

Got a 4th person, some one I work with called Sarah.

The car has got 270K on the clock! but it sounds and looks great. Its comming from Leeds and should be able to pick it up at the end of the month.

Although ill use it for a little bit, see if it needs anything, maybe use it for 2 weeks or so.

In that time Ill check economy and if it is to much then Ill either sell it back to the guy I bought it off or just to some random bod :)

I also got the stickers for the Rally delivered, however they have gone back to the depot as I wasnt in.

(http://www.doubledhosting.com/pics/Volvo740-Estate/the-beast-front-low.jpg) (http://www.doubledhosting.com/pics/Volvo740-Estate/the-beast-front.jpg)

I had to spend £18 on a tyre before driving it back as it was VERY bald.
It now has 259,000 miles on the clock.

It seems ok on the juice.

The petrol thingy works, one bulb is out from what I can see.

There is mainly cosmetic damage.

From what I can see it needs doing:
Lockable fuel cap
Check bulbs
Give it a good wash
Check the drive shafts (Slight grinding noise on the motorway)
New Battery
I might see if I can get a company to sponsor us with 5 new tyres.

The car only failed on 1 tyre and the washer jets.

The garage say theyll fix and retest it all for £77. (£23.odd for the test and free retset)

I figured itd be better to do it that way as even if I got a part warn tyre thatd be silly

Itd cost close to £100 if I did it the long way around.

I think thats a damn good investment this car!!

Well after a little talking to Eru on mIRC we can get him to come with us...

Sara, Can I firstly ask you to meet us in either Luton or Gatwick? or somewhere on the east side of the contry? that will be easy to you get to? maybe a cheap flight from Bristol to Newcastle? or Bristol to Luton?

Let me know if there is a problem and Ill sort it out...

I start driving, pick Nige up in Sheffield, then Eru up at Luton airport.
Eru, aka Del will be flying back to Luton on the sunday night as for work in the morning.

We pick sara up from somewhere on the east coast.

Euro Tunnel will leave Folkstone at 22:50 on the 6th (thursday).

Rally starts at 9am the following morning...
Day 1: Boulogne to Besancon (Approximately 400 miles)
Day 2: Besancon to Turin (Approximately 250 miles)
Day 3: Turin to Nice (Approximately 300 miles)
We drop Del off at Nice he gets a plane and then I prosoe we find somewhere to camp that night. and get back to England on the monday 9th.

This week I get paid, Im going to book train fair and find out about campsites.

I have a tent that can sleep 2 or 3 at a bit of a push.

We need to decide.
How many tents will I need to book for? Who wants to share, or take their tent, or just sleep in the car, which might be a little cramped.

Which of the team mates agree with all of that?
Title: Crum Ball Rally
Post by: knighty on May 29, 2007, 23:58:17 PM
my tent is there is you need it.... its made for 6 people to sleep in 3 little enclosure bits.... its like a tripod tent, 3 corners, and a zip up but on each corner making them into mini bedrooms.... (made for 2 people in each, 2 will fit just nice)

tho its a ******** to put up :s

Sorry to join this late... is this the rally from the 6-8th of July?

If so then Im definitely up for stepping in if Nige cant make it.  I dont need a huge amount of notice so Nige can wait till last minute to let me know if he can go or not or Im happy to sign up straight away if you know already.  Wasnt planning on doing aything else that weekend anyway so Im all yours lol.

Mr Roll lives just up the road from me so I can help out with painting the car and all the leg work for getting ready.  Im not amazingly up to speed on fixing cars tbh (although I have built one and can fix most mechanical stuff someone puts in front of me).  At the very least I dont mind getting my hands/arms/head/everything dirty trying.  If I can get away with not extending my insurance to driving abroad for the full five days and having a laugh in the car/camp sites with a few beers and shenanigans then all the better!    My role can be bringing joy to europe with my beautiful ass...

Should be a good laugh - its only a few days of rallying across europe and the worst that happens is the car catches fire and we just have a BBQ in the middle of France/Italy in July :D  Neither of those things sound like a terrible way of spending a weekend to me.

PS: Knighty, sucks you cant go - not seen you in ages!  Getting a new house in next couple of months and were running a monthly poker night again if youre in? :)

PPS: does the Volvo run only on LPG or can you use normal fuel too?  I seem to remember bits of europe being sketchy with LPG only cars (different filler sizes and problems using car transporters and tunnels...).  Its cheap but were screwed if we run out or its a hot summer in Italy

Hey all back after a Tiscali were screwing me around a bit.

Ill book the train tonight so I just need a 1/4 of £50 for the train, transfered into my account would be perfect :)

I bought the insurance today for myself, which I have to get 12 months insurance for myself, at a cost of £731!!

Next is to tax it and get it ready for the trip in Europe :)

Need preferably 2 new tyres, one for the spare and one on the rear as the other one is a little low on tread.

Ill get the tax when I get my insurance docs through (under 7days) :)

I just wrote a long msg out and then closed the window by accident!

I dont think itll be that much for the transport over there...

Ive found out the Euro tunnel dont take LPG cars!!
And itd be £49 both ways ATLEAST.

But there is Speed Ferries > http://www.speedferries.com/speedBASIC.php

£20 both ways and they do a ferry to the actual start line! 50 min crossing time too.

I think this will be better, so £40 between 4 £10 each for the ferry.

Going
5.7.2007 21:35 Dover / Boulogne Fast Ferry 5.7.2007 23:30

Return
8.7.2007 23:55 Boulogne / Dover Fast Ferry 8.7.2007 23:50

Its a 50 minute trip, so I think this is meaning 23:55 from Boulogne to the 9th arriving at 00:50 on morning of the 9th.

We get back to Dover at 00:50

Sara I didnt want £50! I said a 1/4 of £50 :)
But if you all think I should book this could drop me a text 07905 029 315 and Ill go ahead and book this. And itd only be £10 each for the ferry!

Wed have to go back on the either the early morning ferry, still £20 at 09:50 departure or take the monday off and go through Frnace at a lesierly pace...

Eurotunner wont take LPG? Wonder why? Ferry sounds fine to me, I prefer them anyway!

I reckon we should be a little more leisurely on the return - I did want to be back by the 11th, but it looks like I wont even be in the same job by then, so Im not so bothered now...

Dont forget to take some basic foods with you, tea/coffee, potnoodles, etc, and a kettle you can use on the go. Eating while the vehicle is moving isnt exactly elegant, but it is faster than finding somewhere, stopping, ordering, waiting, eating and starting off again. Anything you can prepare and eat inside the vehicle might be an advantage.

The empty space can be filled with duty frees on the way back too ;)

Just sorting out a web page for our team :)

Doing the map Im starting to realise just how far our round trip is going to be Mr Roll lol.  Us two are looking at 3000 miles :P  Were gonna need a car radio!

Whats our team number btw?  Team 19?

Ive updated my sat nav maps for europe and a few other bits and pieces.  Ill throw you a link to the website when Ive got something together.  Then we can throw a team link up on the main Crumball site.

Insurance wise...  Are we going to insure each of us for two days so we can have two drivers each day so people can get a rest?  Im more than happy to do Newcastle -> Dover in one go since its just UK driving but in Europe Im assuming we probably wont want to solo drive 300+ miles in a day.

thats one thing I remembered today, radio for the car! theyre only £50 from motorworld now anyway :D

Steve has Rolly talked to you about ferries yet? Silly sod thought we could get back to Bologne in time for the evening of the 9th - thats pushing it somewhat! Esp if were gonna celebrate arriving in Nice in one piece :D I need to book some train tickets, ysee...

And yeah def need to split up the driving - two drivers per 24hrs is probably a good idea, then they can both take shifts of whatever lengths between them during that time...

Yeah, he rang yesterday and asked if I was in a huge rush to get back, etc.  Ive made sure to clear my schedule for a couple of days after the trip to get back so Im totally easy on times.

Im working on the basis that we might well find ourselves broken down in the middle of nowhere...  Were doing a 6 day, 3000 mile round trip, over mountains, in Southern Europe (during July), carrying a giant gas cannister in the boot of a 17 year old car with 260,000 miles already on the clock.  What could go wrong? ;)

throw in some fairly heavy celebrations en route and at the finish line and we probably dont want to cut the ferry timings too tight lol.

RE: the driving - splitting the shifts would be good.  A couple of hundred miles in the UK isnt a huge problem but driving windy roads on the wrong side of the road is going to be a lot more tiring.  St. Bernards pass springs to mind lol

Any thing like a split charge relay/2nd battery, i can easily setup on the car too.
As for getting back .. we HAVE to make it folks! How many tools we bringing?

PS: Mr Roll im currently trying to phone you back but you didnt leave your mobile number you spoon! :P

Eru - can you PM me your real name for the site plx :)

We really need to take enough tools to be able to fix the basics.  At the very least a jack and wheel changing equipment, a tow rope, enough cord to hold on an exhaust and some obvious stuff like a socket set, hammer, screw driver.  Gaffa tape and a can of WD40 wouldnt go a miss either.

Ive got some mates who are fluent in French and Italian on call just in case we have to find a hire car, etc.

Currently sat in the garden (enjoying the sun) and playing with photoshop.  Still thinking of a camo paint scheme?  4 colours seems to work well...  Dulux base coat and then 3 tins of of spray paint should do the blobs nice and cheap while looking reasonable.

Take a reel of wire, then if you find an electrical problem it might be simpler to fix. You can strip off the insulation and use it bare for the exhaust. Gaffa tape - heat proof if you can find it to patch any holes in the exhaust and do a million other repairs.

PMd you Rolls number Eru.

yeah - youre right Serious - if were still going for Camo then we need to actually do it soon as itll prob take two mornings of a weekend to do (most of the time just waiting for paint to dry of course).

I actually think it would be worth the time to do some form of paint effect on the car in the spirit of the rally.  It takes a bit of time to do but well be the camo team or whatever.  The more good will you generate by doing something like that the more likely people are to help you out in a jam or come have a laugh at the checkpoints.  Plus its funny lol.

A sky blue car with big white clouds on would be an easier paint job and better than just painting it pink or something equally hen night :P
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally

Of course, if you have time, you could go for a jam stylee advert and ask a company to sponsor you. Then you would be in a jam all the time :mutley:
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: SteveF on June 10, 2007, 18:25:48 PM
We actually missed out on that front.  We could have sorted out some kind of sponsorship or charity thing for this.  Team Tekheads and a paypal link to help us with petrol if we blog our trials and tribulations.  A pound from a few of the members would quickly add up.

Or just get sponsored and make a donation to a charity.  We wouldnt raise a huge amount of course but it all helps :)

Shouldnt be much money to do a camo paint job , about £40 from B+Q.
A tin of white paint as an undercoat (~£5).  A tin of matt paint as a base colour (~£10).  3 tins of spray paint (~£18 ) and a couple of paint rollers, some sand paper and some tape to mask the glass bits (~£10).

Its more a case of it taking time to do rather than money.

Easyjet fly most places out of Nice iirc.  (An old girlfriend used to live in Avignon for a year so I had to fly into Nice a lot) They probably dont do Luton direct but getting back to the UK should be easy enough.

As for the Ferries we probably need a list of times for everything somewhere so we can work it out properly.  Ive actually not got a good grasp for timings yet so a big list that says leave Newcastle at this time on this day.  Pick up x at this place and this time.  Get ferry to Calais this day/time, etc would be very useful.  When its all written down in one big list itll be obvious to one of us where any problems are.

Ill do it this eve if noone does the list before but got some other work to do this afternoon.

Ferry check in at 20:50 on the 5th

Del finished work about 3:10 But has to get to a pick up point or he has to get to us to be picked up

Sara can get the train to Dover for 7-8pm

The only problem we have now is sorting out Eru getting back from Nice on the 9th at a resonable cost, any cheaper fares than €77 anyone can find? Nice to Birmingham, Nice to Luton? or Nice to Bristol? as myself and Eru cant find any :o

€77 aint bad - whats that, £50?

If ERU can wait until the evening of Monday the 9th, an easyjet plane getting him from Nice into Luton at 2300 will cost him €45.99/~£30

flight 2128;
dep. Mon 09 Jul 21:50
arr. Mon 09 Jul 23:00

Otherwise if you can manage coming in to Stansted ERU, then there are cheaper flights from Ryanair every evening from Turin, which we could def get you to by Monday evening: 48.02 EUR

Sorry if this spammed the forums a bit but its easier to organise this way.  Any chance those 2 and maybe this thread could be pinned for a couple of weeks?)

Looking at that list I agree with Sara - we probably want to be getting the ferry back on the morning of Wednesday 11th July which gets Sara back midday on wednesday and Andy and I back Wednesday night.

Eru, if your work is Thursday the 12th then it shouldnt be a problem. That is 3 days to fly from Nice to the UK. Well actually have driven back to Newcastle before thursday the 12th.

If you mean Thursday the 5th i.e. before we leave then I guess it depends what time you can get to Dover for...

If he finishes work in Coventry at 3pm and the Ferry doesnt leave unti 9:30 then hes got over 6 hours to get to Dover.

Google maps says its a 3 hour drive (plus a bit to allow for London ofc).  Should be very doable if hes driving to Dover.  If were thinking of picking him up on the way down from Newcastle thats a big detour

Newcastle -> Dover = 6 hours.
Newcastle -> Dover (via Coventry) = 8 hours with London in the way

Im very underprepared (of course) but guess we need to start thinking about this properly soon.

We still up for painting it this weekend?  If so its meant to be pouring with rain so well have to jerry rig a cover of some sort.  Youre welcome to park/paint it at my parents house.  Theres a space where my car used to be lol.

I should have got insured earlier and used it as my day to day run about last week now I think about it - would have saved me a ton of problems with lack of transport hehe

So true, Im getting really excited about the trip!!!!! :D

Although, Steve... What happens if the V5 doesnt come in time... I am getting worried now. There is no Tax without the V5.

Can we borrow your dads GTi?

I think we need to get everything for the car, if the V5 doesnt come then we can put all the things onto another car we could buy that has the tax already.

I honestly dont think my little rallye would do the journey!

I could buy a 3rd car, but I really dont want to :):(

All the cars here are in use Im afraid.  Could probably have taken any of them if it was just the weekend but cant acquire them for a week.  Taking mine wouldnt normally be a problem but its been stolen of course.

Weve still got a while yet till the v5 has to be here but someone mentioned a postal strike...  not sure of details but that could have an effect.

Is there a backup for getting a v5 like going to the DVLA?  There must be some system in place for getting one on short notice...

Hows the car looking?  has it got all the stuff like headlight deflectors for driving on the wrong side of the road?

Well have to do all the European mods at the weekend. I have a list.

Unfortunately I asked the DVLA, at the Gosforth branch and they said Id have to have the V5 to tax the car.

I mean I could take my little peugeot if things to really tight... But Id have to replace the brakes and fix the things I want to fix before hand.

Basically they said the V5 would take 4 weeks, I sent off for it on the 7th of this month, this leads upto next Thursday. Although I can take it to the DVLA office and get it taxed there and then.

The postal strike is from tomorrow till Monday. So hopefully itll be in the post!

You want to paint it here or are you unable to move it till the v5 appears?  (guess if it arrives tomorrow then it can be regd before then anyway).  Might be easier than doing it on your mums grass.

hmm I dont really want to risk an £80 fine... Ive done it before but dont want to chance my luck again.

Can we work on the car itself? and get the European mods done?

The Gas adapters...
http://www.autogas.co.uk/shop.php?id=1127441639

...Im getting confused... Ill give them a call tomorrow while at work and I think we will really only need a french adapter and maybe an Italian adapter. We will mostly be in France...
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: SteveF on June 28, 2007, 20:40:19 PM
sure  - most of the european mods we cant fit onto the car until we get on the ferry.

A french only gas adapter is probably enough.  90% of the journey is in France anyway.

Assuming the v5 arrives tomorrow then tax can be got then or Saturday morning and then the car should be road legal.  Think were about the last team to paint ours now.  You seen the union jack one yet? Theyve done a great budget job.  The starsky and hutch one is pretty cool too.  The nicest was that sierra but they dropped £1500 on a spray job and now arent going to take it as its too nice lol

yeah I love the paint job on that merc.  Its a shame someone did the union Jack as we should have thought of it first :)

Ahh I see what you mean about the postal strike and the V5 delay.  Yeah sure, can bring it over tonight or whenever (pmd you the rents address).

Ill sort us out some sheeting and things in case its raining on saturday.  Plus want a big sheet under the car so we dont end up painting the drive lol

I wouldnt bother with the winch.  I big bit of rope and some horsepower should solve any problem :)

Hey folks....

just googled the crumball and this site came up :D

Well, that resprayed sierra you speak of is mine... its worth about £2500 now, so not really fair to take on the rally, plus if i had to ditch it in europe id cry!

We did buy another sierra for £160 but the headgasket popped a few weeks ago.

So i nipped over to hexham and bought a TD mondeo for £75 with no tax/mot.

Its all legal now, only had a snapped spring and a few bulbs out, but apart from that, weve still done nothing to it.... and to make matters worse - the gearbox has started making an awfull whining noise and we cant get it sorted in time, plus we still gotta service it, paint it etc...

oh and somebody crashed into it yesterday lol, but its still alive.

looks like its a busy weekend for both our teams :D

When are yous leaving to go down to dover?

Were thinking of midninght on the wed/thurs... fancy going down together (leaving from gateshead)

Oh and i gotta find my old CB and mag mount aerial too

Weve got a spare place if anybody wants to join and chip in for costs...
Mr Roll knows us all pretty well, so we wont kidnap ya

Wez.

heya Wez.  Dont blame you for not taking the Sierra tbh :)

This is our schedule: http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/8211.page

Mr_roll and me are driving down from Newcastle on thursday setting off early thursday.  So yeah, if youre coming from Hexham/Gateshead itll be cool to head down together. :)

Were catching the 21:35 ferry from Dover (on thurs 5th)

Its actually looking like we might have a spare spot in our car too as Eru (our 4th member) was having problems with flights and has kinda vanished.

Coolio...

were booked on the 10.40am speed ferry though... so leaving at midnight, gonna take it easy on thw way down due to gearbox issues, add to that outer london rush hour traffic, so well be leaving midnight to make it in good it - if we make it at all.

Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally

yeah - you can be in charge of the team name Sara :D

Wez - Mr_roll/Andy needs to use the car as his day to day car so were not going to be allowed to paint it now so youre way way ahead of us.  Just hope were not the only team who doesnt decorate our car.

Not sure about the ferries - Ive only seen flood warnings which shouldnt be a problem but not seen if theres any wind around for the next lot of rain.  High winds do stop ferries but they have to be very high.

Oooo ooo okay. Will try and think of something amusing by Thursday...

...yeah I was wondering about the paint job seeing as Andy wanted to keep the car! As a compromise, can I suggest adding cling-film to the bonnet/doors and spray-painting that? Itll probably sag a bit with heat/rain, but that just means replacing it every so often (thats a chance to put a new silly slogan on daily, though!) :D

Well still put the "47" sticker on though, right?

really - that might be worth a try.  Must admit Im kinda gutted about the not painting thing tbh.  Everyone I speak to ask the same 3 questions...

question 1) What car you doing it in?
answer 1) A giant volvo with over 260,000 miles already on the clock
response 1) laughter and smiles

question 2) whats your team name?
answer 2) we havent thought of one yet I think
response 2) a bit dissapointed but usually come up with suggestions

question 3) what colour have you painted the car
answer 3) were not painting it
response 3) that sucks

Id rather pay for quarter of the car so we can paint it and get in the spirit of the rally.  The cost of the car is meaningless when filling it with petrol increases its  value by half.  Seems a shame not to do it properly cause half the fun is doing it in a comedy style.  Trying to save the car and keep it in as good as possible condition is slightly against the theme.

Mate did a rally last week in an old Volvo done as ghostbusters style (below).  Doing that would only take a coat of white paint which could either be washed off using Wezs trick or tbh a white volvo should be fine for day to day use afterwards.  Everything else on tht decoration is just random crap stuck to the roof rack.  The current paint job is screwed already with scratches and rust (the cars sat outside my window right now since we brought it over to mine paint on Saturday before the last minute change).  Im not sure gambling on the car making the round trip and actually being of any use afterwards is the way to do this the more I think about it.  Its either a car for the rally or it isnt.

that volvos mint...

i know what you mean about the car, will be a shame no to tart it up....
but itll still be a laugh, good crack etc...

ours is now orange & black, silly stripes and getting a few choice graphics tomorrow...

if it makes it back its gonna be my daily driver for a bit... if you leave the rally stickers on it, people will realise youve painted it for a laugh and yer not just being a bell end :D
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: SteveF on July 03, 2007, 00:18:28 AM
yeah she was trying to persuade me that is how we should do ours instead of camo since you just end up with a plain white volvo at the end of it.  I reckon its the way to go but its out of my hands.  Its very cool tho.

Plus its a good excuse to have flashy lights, an airhorn and carry a super soaker! If we do it Im tempted to do the rally in overalls and cobble together a backpack for the true ghostbuster look hehe :D

Another idea is to give it a quick coat of white paint, or another light colour and get random people to sign it with a waterproof felt tipped pen.

It wont be exactly original but worth a go. Get as many of the other teams to sign it too, and any celebs you run into
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: wez on July 03, 2007, 03:15:53 AM
erm, idea...  :!:

why not wallpaper the beast? Prob quicker than painting it, and totally removable... not sure if it would come off if it rained, but just take some gaffer tape with ya if it starts to peel... lol
If you search youtube for the staples2naples 2006, theres a sierra with tartan wallpaper and it looks cool

im pretty sure it wouldnt damage the paintwork after a good wash/polish once removed  :D

How about:

Veni, Vidi, Volvo

("I came, I saw, I roll" - which ties in with Mr Roll and the brand of the car)

As for decoration... I seriously think clingfilm and spraypaint might be a quick-n-dirty fix!

Otherwise we could go all Roman on its ass and attach a load of leafy branches with cable ties to the top (laurel wreath), or try and clad it in bed sheets (toga)...

Veni, Vidi, Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) is fairly well known, though :)

So whats this about wallpapering..?
Title: Re:Crum Ball Rally
Post by: SteveF on July 03, 2007, 13:50:54 PM
the wallpaper ideas probably the simplest.  We could also use cheap vinyl flooring for kitchens/bathrooms.  Both of them will be fairly quick to fit and they will come off aferwards so its back to a normal volvo.

If we wallpaper it, then covering it in paste afterwards should waterproof it well enough and flooring is naturally waterproof.  Flooring gives a ton of options from laminate wood effects to bright colours and some mad patterns.

Theres a BnQ down the road and Ive come home early so we can sort something out.  Id go and start doing something now but really need Andys thoughts since its up to him.  Hes coming round in a bit to sort things so we might get a chance later on.  We;ve only got a day left and need a new seatbelt and rear tyre so hopefully we can get cracking soon.

Im kinda liking some of the BnQ flooring:

(http://s7ondemand4.scene7.com/is/servlet/izoom/BandQ/5021318581642_001c_v001_zp?&$230x230_generic$) (http://s7ondemand4.scene7.com/is/servlet/izoom/BandQ/5021318581635_001i_v001_zp?&$230x230_generic$)

Something like that covering the Volvo would be mad lol

The best would be if astroturf is on sale and then we could have a grass/camo car.  If we can cope with jumping languages then thatd be veni vidi verde volvo :D But cant start anything till Andy gets here.

Andys going to ring you and Eru either tonight or tomorrow and insure you...  guess hell prob do it tomorrow.  Anyway we added me to his insurance for 7 days and it was only £30 so should be about the same for you.  We tried adding you guys but they need some info from ya.  Andy has a full list of what they need but off the top of my head he needs to know:

Full name
date of birth
month/year you got your license (has to be >1 year)
any car isurance claims in last 5 years (theft or accident)
any convictions in last 5 years
Profession
Do you belong to any unions/professional bodies
Any illness that might affect driving your driving
Always been a uk resident?
(address probably wouldnt hurt too but not sure they needed that)

If you want to PM either me or him on here then thats cool otherwise youll prob get a call.  They said its no problem to add you guys assuming you dont have any weird things like 400 crashes last year  :).

----

General stuff:

V5 arrived yesterday and Andy got the tax disc this morning so the car is officially road legal now.  In fact weve been using it a bit today and Andy and his lass are out in it now.  Ive not drivven it yet (insurance starts tomorrow) but its comfy and seems smooth enough considering its age etc.  Not driven a 5m long car before so should be interesting lol :)

We got AA european breakdown cover today for ~£50.  It seems a very good deal - if they cant repair it by the side of the road theyll tow the car back to Andys house for us from any of the 4 countries we pass through.  Then theyll pay our travel costs back to blighty (including budget flights) or more usefully provide us with a hire car :)  Seemed a bargain once we got the price down.

We settled on a compromise with the decoration.  We bought some shiny sticky film sheets (think christmas wrapping paper and you wont go far wrong).  Weve got pink and silver.  Were going to do 2 dodge viper stripes over the top of the car in the pink and then use the silver for something on the sides.  Itll just peel off and it should show weve made an effort :) We actually considered pop riveting carpet to it and painting a union jack on the bonnet and roof at one stage in amongst looking at wallpaper and kitchen flooring lol.  Well be decorating tomorrow and Ill drop you some pics.

Knighty lent us the giant multiroom tent and a good tow rope the other night so were set on that front.  Well try setting it up tomorrow if its dry.

We got something to repair the exhaust since theres a 2p piece size hole in the pipe meaning the lambda sensor is on, it smells pretty bad (carbon monoxide?) and it sounds like a tractor lol.  I tried fitting some quick fix aluminium tape the other night to temporarily patch it but that blew out this afternoon. :(  Anyway were going to repair it properly tomorrow with putty and a metal collar.

Not exactly ciritcal but all the gizmos like heaters and electric windows work fine which is reassuring and were going to transplant Andys head unit into the dashboard so we have some music.  We have all the little stuff like headlight deflectors GB sticker, the rally stickers for the doors, replaced the windscreen wipers, spare light kits, first aid kit, tools, etc so will prob do a fluid check.  Its been on my drive for a couple of days and no leaks of any kind so itll just be top ups.

Were taking the car down to a Volvo specialist so they can give it a health check - mainly to make sure everythings safe.  After weve got a new rear tyre (getting low on tread) and the Volvo guys have checked the passenger seatbelt then the cars good to rally!!! :D

Think thats everything.  Sorry its a bit of a brain splurdge but least you know everything thats going on :)

Ok weve repaired the exhaust properly with aluminium tape, tons of gun gum and a metal collar with clip round it - that fixed the lambda sensor and it sounds like a car again.

(http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/exhaust_sml.jpg) (http://"http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/exhaust.jpg")

We did the stickers which took frikken AGES.  Rain showers all day and sticky back plastic are not a good combo.  Its now got pink dodge viper stripes from bonnet to boot (the pic below was early on but they do go all the way back now).  Theres a slight gay vibe to the car but its all good :)

(http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/decor1_sml.jpg) (http://"http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/decor1.jpg") (http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/decor2_sml.jpg) (http://"http://www.stevefishwick.co.uk/misc/crumball/decor2.jpg")

We rewired the car speakers and transplanted Andys head unit so we now have a CD player with 4 speakers working.  Grab some CDs cause were prob not gonna have a lot of time to make things.  I demand bohemian rhapsody is in the there and Gogol Bordello singing Start wearing purple as our team song.  (purple stripes etc etc and who can resist a bnd doing hungarian gypsy punk rock from New York :D)

Im not sure...  the one Im using right nows about the worst we could use.  Its 17 or 19" diagonal, a desktop replacement (= no battery power) and worth ~£2k.  Depends how many photos/how much video we need to dump onto it.  Not having access to plugs will be the killer.

Can take it if its needed but it wont last long for playing music etc.

edit: just realised I have an old f**ked laptop.  That might be better for just dumping files off cameras :D  Ill dig it out and see if the battery holds charge.  (Has no keyboard but that shouldnt matter).

Well, where are we gonna charge it anyway? I have enough mem cards for my own use, I was just thinking about music...

Could bring my own lappy but unless connected to power, the battery will only last 4 hours or so.

yeah - laptop isnt the way forwards for music tbh.

A cheap battery powered stereo with CD player only costs about £20-30 from argos these days and thatll work in the tent too :)

Think theres prob gonna be some shopping on the way as Ive not sorted any food or any camping cooking things at all lol

Yeah I wondered about food today, ehhehe!
Just remember: "La Supermarche"!

I have a wee mp3 cd player, and mini speakers... but if I start packing too much I wont even make it too the railway station :S Maybe we can just find some random French rap on the local radio stations :P

Will see what I can do, though!

B&Q have the generators, as do screwfix and a few other places.

Your collective lives will be so much better with mains electricity

If any of you see this before you go, stop off at a Halfords on the way: CLICK ME (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BasicCatalogSearchResultView?searchTerm=inverter&storeId=10001&catalogId=10151&langId=-1&pageSize=10000&beginIndex=0&beginIndexForPagination=0&sType=SimpleSearch&searchType=EXACT&searchTermCaseSensitive=no&searchTermOperator=LIKE&searchTermScope=3&coSearchSkuEnabled=true&resultCatEntryType=2&sortOrder=ascending&resultType=2&topCategoryId=ALL&x=0&y=0)

Get maybe the 150W normal or e-can one, Ill bring my wee lappy (lots of music), and the FM transmitter thingy, sorted!

EDIT: Yeesh what a long URL, edited to fit page... Just search for inverter on the halfrauds site if it times out or anything. Would go get the goods myself from my local Maplin but they seem to charge a tenner extra! Over Halfords!

EDIT2: I would only use it when the lappy actually needed charging, and then only on the go - dont want to flatten our car battery!

Dont bother Knighty tbh - well end up setting off later than we think and well never get round to driving to yours and collecting it.

Theres still an issue with a low tread tyre to sort out plus were just pacing now.  Got to get some sleep soon as think Im doing the first leg from Sunderland -> Luton airport -> Dover in 9 hours and still packing/doing maps.

PS: enjoy India mate.  I get the impression you plan to ;)

The rallys gonna rock.  There was a moment today where Andy and I were sat in the front of the volvo, having just finished decorating and rewiring the car and stereo playing out of all the right speakers.  We were just sat in the front of the car grinning like idiots and shaking hands on a job well done lol.

How much did it cost you in total, things like fuel, food and entry etc?
What problems if any did you encounter running LPG?  Car problems etc?!?

Glad to hear you all made it folks. Im gutted I lost my passport. Especially as I now need it for a funding application. It seems such a waste of money on the flight too :(
Still a lesson has been learnt the hard way again ... im still up for Moscow tho once I get a new one (£65 too!!!!!!) and have started to think of the Mongol rally next summer now.

yeah the passport sucked :(

Then again if you were in Birmingham while we were at Luton airport then youd never have made the ferry anyway.  So it saved you driving the rest of the way to meet us I guess :).

My mate (who wanted to come along) is probably going to lynch you however lol.
