Title: Does anyone have any hobbies these days?
Post by: Dave on March 27, 2006, 00:59:51 AM
...apart from the linux fans that is.

seriously though - just out of interest what is your hobby? (am just bored & the forum is called sports & hobbies so I thought Id ask)

does anyone on tek still play warhammer? or collect stamps or go train spotting? I guess there are a few photographers on here & also car enthusiasts computer gamers. But does anyone do anything else that could be considered a hobby?

Ive got a coin collection but aside from that I dont really have any hobbies. I guess I used to have a train set as a kid - tempted to actually get one set upagain when I get my own house (bit sad I know). I also built a radio controlled car as a kid & used to build air fix planes.

I guess computer games seem to have taken over these days or do many people still have hobbies.

You know, about 18 months ago I could safely say I had no hobbies, and hadnt had any for several years. As a kid I was very arty and was always making or drawing stuff, but that died after GCSE art pumped all the inspiration out of me.

Anyhow, last year I was doing a placement at Motorola, and I booked time off to go sailing on a tall ship for a week in Feb in the Canaries (with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, www.tallships.org). I came back totally addicted and booked another 16 days off in May/June, have been another time since, helped the charity out at a couple of boat shows, and hope to join them again this summer as a volunteer Deckhand.

Also got into dinghy sailing (from the biggest to the smallest, hehe), have completed Royal Yachting Assocs Start Sailing levels 1 and 2 (capsizing was fun, wheee).

And I got some amazing but not-good-enough photos from the first two voyages, which prompted me to get a new digital camera which could do it all justice, so Im well into my photography now with a Fuji S5500 (though not taken it out for a while).

What else - oh yeah, after not being bothered for a while, Ive jumped head-first straight back into web-design and stuff - just developing my own site but Im learning :D

Finally, I moved to a place which was 2 miles or so from uni, so Ive been cycling almost daily for about 9 months now. Its fun :D Once the weather clears Ill do it on weekends too - Aug Bank holiday last year was great - bikes, beer, Bristol. Brilliant.

Phew. All of that within a year. I was so boring not so long ago...

Writing si-fi, collecting plates, photography, hope to get back into cycling again too.

Have been thinking as I live so close to the sea of taking up sea fishing... Yeah I know Im veggie, doesnt stop me catching them though :P

Sara, pracitice makes perfect, or at least better with photography, keep a camera with you at all times if you can. Couple of days ago I left mine at home and we went close to a huge burning warehouse on the Tyne in Newcastle, had I had it with me there could have been some impressive images on here :banghead:

Only *nix, programming and photography are my active hobbies atm.

I used to do a bit of skydiving and I tumbled/polished rocks and I definately did more reading than I do now.

Besides tinkering with computers, I enjoy SCUBA diving, cycling, marine and reef aquariums, and fishing.

I aint really got any hobbies at the mo other than using computers, couldnt say Im even playing that many games at the mo either.  I really should start looking for some to get me out the house more.  Wouldnt mind getting into photography a bit more but would need a better camera and I aint got £400 at the mo to get even a cheapo SLR camera.

Get yourself a superzoom such as one of the Konica-Minoltas. Output is entirely adequate for 99% of needs. I have no idea why peeps automatically assume they need an SLR when there are other options.

Its probably cause of the extra flexibility you can get from an SLR.   Well I suppose the perceived extra flexibility, if you know how to use it.  Suppose a compact like a superzoom or a Fujifilm S7000 or S5600 would be good but for the price of one of those, pay a bit more and get a Nikon D50 with a 18-55mm lens for £400.

Doing that sort of thing would be fun but am unsure of local places that might do it to start, really should look.  Plus I aint got the upper body strength for most of them especially climbing and knowing me Id end up being too lazy too do them anyway :whoops:

I dont ever use commercial sauces.

Last nights marinade:
sunflower oil, kikkoman soy, garlic, mustard, onion, pepper, chili, coriander, fennel. marjoram, oregano, fenugreek...

:D

A few more ingredients, but Im not tellin

It was so good as to cause swoonage.

But if you want bbq sauce, traditional, my recipe is:

2c tomato sauce
1c white vinegar
1/2 c chopped onion
some garlic
1t salt
2t pepper
1/2c brown sugar
1t cayenne
1/2 t liquid smoke

I have plenty of hobbies outside PC, Internet and gaming. I enjoy the gym, am a member of a running club except were season runners so dont resume till April. I generally enjoy my sports such as tennis, badminton, football and snooker. Other than that everything else can be done in my own room....oh no wise jokes there!

tall ships sounds pretty cool tbh...

I dont play anymore, got no one to play with and I aint going into the shops to play.  But I still follow it quite well especially the novels which have just got soo good, erm imo.  Still got all my figures and stuff though and would love to buy some of the bigger models from Forgeworld but I aint got the cash :(

The other boardgame/roleplaying game I sort of still follow is Battletech, although I aint played a game in a long long time.  But I still like to buy the novels and follow whats going on.  Everynow and then I go through a phase of buying source books from ebay or somewhere, which never get read but am gonna collect the lot if its the last thing I do, maybe.

Dont class either as hobbies though cause I aint actively doing any gaming with either there more something I like to go back to every now and then.

You betcha bum - its bloody hard work but every time you feel like youve achieved something; you meet brilliant people from all walks of life, for a week or two youre so deeply intrenched in sails, ropes, watches, deck-scrubbing, mess duty, climbing aloft, getting all the sleep you can - that all the stresses of normal life just melt away. Brilliant. Highly recommended.

If you can go, go!

TBH, I dont really have that many hobbies.  Most of my free time this winter has been spent on this infernal rig.

One thing  I definately want to make an effort with this year is my cylcing as it is now getting warm enough for a pleasent ride.  Thats something I do enjoy.

Red has kindly leant me his Acoustic Guitar while he is down at Bournemouth Uni, it would be just gathering dust other wise.  Im making an effort to see what I can teach myself.  Progress is slow lol. :-)

I used to have quite a few other hobbies a while back, used to go swiming every week with friends, used to take keyboard lessons, though I still play it and have my keyboard.

The other thing I occasionly do is go power kiting, Im sure a few of you have read some of the previous threads made before by red on that.  I dont allways enjoy it though, especially when the kite is in control of you, not the other way around.

I train a martial art everyday, I play pool regularly, I like games of badminton and squash whenever I can (or find a partner), and my mate is egging me to try rock climbing.

Unfortunately finding time for these things is increasingly difficult with college and work commitments.

On the subject of photography, I recently bought an old Dimage A1 which has SLR type functions (not an SLR tho), and Ive been learning photography that way - using my mums SLR would be too expensive on film alone

But yeah, when Im home its either Dreamcast or XBOX  :P

I know it sounds sad... but I like work.. its.... a challenge (kind of)

thinking of new things no-one else has thought of, out thinking the competition, all the little things.... + normally everyone thinking Im insane but then the look on there faces when something works out just like i planned it ;)

My oven and pots are imperial, so thats what I use. :P I dont measure except for baking, just eyeball it and taste

That recipe would work out even if you measured using a cracked coffee mug. Its none too picky. :P

there is always a better cam. but you can take good pics on almost any cam

these pic where all taken on a "toy camera" called a Holga they are less than £20 new and that inc shipping from hongkong, thaty use medium format 120 film (cant wait till I get mine ^.^)

use what you have first see if you enjoy it before splashing out on a dslr
