My last two cars were Ebay finds.

Got a Mk2 golf gti for £230 witch lasted me 2 years with only a new fuel pump needed

And a Mk3 golf vr6 (£500) witch has lasted me 2 years so far but I get regular problems with it lol

Around 19mpg, the only reason I'm able to keep the Vr6 is due to only using it on weekends.
If i do 2000 miles a year in it I'd be surprised.

the silver mk2 in the background is the one mentioned in my first post.

Ah a weekend car, i agree its not worth using a VR6 as a commuter atm, i get annoyed with having to put £20 a week in my 1.6 Astra :P

I'm looking for a Golf Mark 4 (4 door diesel) at the moment as a < £1.5k occasional use car. Any pointers on what to avoid / look for / *on topic* ebay links?

£1.5K is really the bottom end of the market for a MK4 atm.

The Golf is the most sought after diesel due to its cult following and the fact they have a good reputation for making Diesel engines.

Personally i reckon your going to get a dog to midrange (unless going for a 98/00 plated mk4) either way, for that sort of money its going to be 120k+ i would say, so look for service history, a recent cambelt change, knocking on squeeking from the rear suspension (i think it was the bushes but you will hear it if its there, usually at slow mph) and regular stuff like making sure it has oil/water, it doesn't smoke etc, and try and buy one with a new mot cus then you get 12 months peace of mind before you need worry.

You could also try looking for a MK3 as tidy, low mileage examples can be picked up for £700-1000, always remember to haggle even if the car as just been listed for sale, if you don't ask for discount you won't get it, so familiarise yourself with what price these cars are making in your local area by checking completed listings on ebay, when you find a car you like (if on ebay) copy and paste the auction name/heading back into the search bar and look at completed listings and see if it has been sold before as the seller could be shill bidding and relisting several times.

Remember for pre 2001 diesels you will pay more in tax as its simplified so you pay the same as some dude with a petrol engine.

I also forgot to mention you might find a low mileage SDI in your price range if your not fussed about getting a TDI, and you should also consider alternatives: Skoda Fabia/Octavia, VW Bora/Passat, Seat Ibiza/Toledo/Leon. Audi seem to be at a slightly higher premium than VW in most cases for good examples.

PS. PM me your post code and i'll have a good look around for you later when i get home from work! :)

Great stuff, exactly what I needed to hear. I can stretch my budget if its sensible for the long term. Only looking at the Mk4 because I love the styling, would love an Audi as well but like you say, premium is high.

Currently in SE10 but not sure I want to buy in London.

I forgot to mention to coincide with new MOT Regulations you might want to stay away from cars with Dashboard Lights on :P

2001 = £1350 Long MOT. Cambelt + Service?

1999 = £1795 89K, see what 2 year warranty covers? I assume new MOT on purchase.

2002 = £2395 GT Sporty version. MOT/Service? Bit of travelling.

I checked Ebay, most of them are auctions so hard to gauge what they will make but keep an eye on them regardless, i'm sure you know what your looking for.

A contender for possibly the worst modified car (let alone vw) ever.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MODIFIED-2000-VOLKSWAGEN-LUPO-E-SDI-CUSTOM-PAINT-JOB-AND-AUDI-GRILL-/180764585477?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a1668ae05

Audi Grille? Hand Painted or Wrap? Wheels/stickers look out of place and blue inside! Is that fake bullet holes on the tailgate?

Seriously.

Hahaha, that's the biggest piece of sh*te I've seen in a while. I'd pay just to see it on fire.
