Bought Cinq for £400
Girlfriend Obliterated 2 tyres with pothole incident (not 100% her fault)
Dented one rim
Cost £~140ish
Gearbox. Lost reverse. Took to garage for repair. Lost teeth from reverse cog. Turns out rest of gearbox is all worn, Being reconditioned. New Clutch, New Clutch Cable
Flywheel removed and re-drilled as a bolt has sheered.
£425.
FFS. Should have kept my Astra. Only cost £200 more a year to insure.
-
you win some you loose some.
seems a bit pricey for 2 tyres and a rim tho.
ah well life goes on mate, and yeah id have stuck with the astra as well.. but it had nothing to do with cost in my case.
-
Not sorted rim yet but thats an easy fix.
2x Pirelli p700-zs @ ~£50 each.
Tracking and balancing as the wheel was pointing off to one side.
Just going for cheap motoring to get enough money for wedding and house.
Car has other ideas.
-
£140 for two tyres, sounds very steep.
-
its a Fiat 500, why would you put performance tyres on it? Just get some of the £40 for 2 at National, theyll be plenty good enough for that.
-
Its what was already on there. Prefer to keep them the same. And the tyre is the only thing keeping you on the road. Helps you stop, corner and accelerate. Also has an effect on fuel economy. They watch you whilst you sleep....
The £140 was including the laser tracking and all associatedness.
-
still a whore load of money.

But they arent bad tyres that they fit. Ive had Barum shoes on at least 2 different cars, and while they arent performance animals they are plenty good enough for a normal car. I wouldnt have put them on any of the fast stuff ive had, but for £100 I had 4 new tyres including balancing. I go elsewhere for tracking (£15) because they monkeys that they normally get to do it at the big natioanl chains just dont do it right.

You shouldnt mix and match tyres though, its asking for trouble. For the sake of a tenner per corner Id rather have the safety - tyres are one thing not worth being a tightarse on. Its your life at risk at the end of the day.

Ive never seen a problem with mixing tyres on a car, provided they are the same on each axle. Last Astra was running a set of BF Goodrich on the front (Uber Sticky damn things as well), and some Pirelli P4000s on the back. Ill never use those Pirellis again either. So damn soft I wore the front ones out in under a year.
-
I can get four new tires for the Daihatsu at my local Firestone for 50GBP. No reason to spend more for rubber thats mainly abused in urban scree. :P Mixed brands dont matter, but its nice to have matching sets front and rear.
Nevertheless, the moneys spent. Id have junked or sold such a needy vehicle for parts and bought another beater. :P
-
personally i go for the cheapest that are the right size and weight for the car, at the end of the day they are all built to a standard so as long as you look after them aint gonna suddenly give up on ya

Yup

Excellent, the tire companies adverts are working.
While Im not naive enough to think that tires are completely equal--for daily driving, even cheapies are just fine provided that they have enough tread in the wet and are inflated properly.
-
Im not saying there is anything wrong with the cheaper brands (depending on your car), but I maintain that you get what you pay for. But different tyres on each corner is a big no no, per axle maybe isnt so bad.
I know for a fact that Ive not had a single wheelspin or seen the backend of my car dangerously fly out since fitting the new tyres, instead of four different cheapies on each corner. That was dangerous tbh. It might not matter so much on a small engined FWD car, but it makes a hell of a difference on my car. Im not talking about fast or aggressive driving either.

Go take Photos of the Potholes - pref with a normal camera that can time/date stamp
Then phone Highways in Council & complain as your Council Tax is supposed to be used to maintain the roads as well as take you rubbish away & light your streets.
You should be entitled to refund/compensation.

odd that people talk about loosing the back end, iv never had it break away on any car on any tyres.. unless you count the time i slammed on the brakes mid corner and ploughed into a field.
wheelspin a plenty but thats easy to get

Thats just opened the floodgate up for piss taking season.
-
just seems weird. iv ever had it under normal conditions cant see how the rear can have so little grip unless your using bicycle wheels
-
get the stuff sorted and im sure youll have some trouble free motoring.
talking about tyres, ive never had any under or oversteer on my car, but that probably coz my car is awesome. im sure the £120ea Continental Sc2s help, but im not getting them again, im going for some £55 Hankooks VS K104s next.
-
i had conti SC2s for a while and they certainly hold well
no over/under steer issues in the range rover but thats probably down to having 255 wide tyres on each corner and down the 2.5 tons it weighs lol
-
its because ur calibra has most of the power going to the front wheels and not the back, understeer galore, just like an FWD car
-
i know all about the different drives and over/understeer.. but to get the back end to loose grip in anything youd have to be going some surely
-
Nope, I wouldnt say 20mph off a roundabout is "going some". Dry weather too. Its all down to the tyres, that. Miss_Kinky will vouch, she was in the car when that particular incident occured.
-
Well, it needs its good tyres with me driving.
Top and bottom strut braces and standard -20mm drop. Can out corner a lot of things. Like to keep the edge :D
-
!!!
+£130 for a pair of selector cables.
bloody fiat.
-

Its like saying Hi, can I have some trouble, please?
-
Rang them up and told them to put it back as I think they are taking the piss.
Im sure its just the selector cables in the 1st place that will have broken.
So they are going to "Look over the paperwork" and see what they can do.

That hasnt been an issue since the radial/crossply problem.

True but I just thought that was how u normally drive
Nah only kidding 99.9% when he is concerntrating he is a fantastic driver :ptu: sometimes he makes u want to cover ya eyes when ya think ya about to hit summat cause ya just passing within a inch between the vehicle and object but it just took me a while to get use to the lowness of the mazda lol
-
LOL, you could fit an M1 Abrahams through the gaps some people sit waiting to get through. It irritates me when they dont know the width of their car.

-
All fixed.
Pick car up tomorrow.
Total bill... Ive had my pants down.
£581
Should have scrapped the bloody thing, or at least a 1242 Turbo.
-
challenger 2 is a far better tank
-
Im raising you a Leopard II
-
yea theyre good too
but theyre not exactly used it battle conditions like the abrams and challenger so its not really a fair comparison
-
Going a bit off-topic here :p I dont really know anything about tanks, except for I could fit one through some traffic!
-
anyone seen the new snickers advert?
-
*throws a snickers at u* Yeah :)

Going back to the councils responsibility for potholes, I pursued Edinburgh City successfully for two bent wheel due to this crater
(http://www.morssdn.idps.co.uk/images/quiz37.jpg)
Just get a picture of the pothole, ring up the council and demand a form to fill in for compensation.

I don think he read my post :stupid:
Talking of Gaps
Theres a woman who drives in the middle of our street. Its easily wide enough for 2x cars, even with cars parked. .. Went past her day & she was pointing at me waving her finger. Slammed on the breaks & Told the old hag to go fourth and replicate & stop driving in the middle of road. Especially as the parked cars are herside of the road so its my right of way.
Police not knocked my door yet. ing hate this area, full of snobby wannabes who think theyve made it in life for living here.
-
its effing annoying round here people just come round cars parked on their side of the road even when its tight so im slamming on the brakes in my truck trying not to run it up the pavement to get out the way, then they look at me like im from another planet.. hey f00l my right of way.. next time i wont break and well see who comes off worse!
-
Woohoo!
I love this car.
Got the car back thursday, after spending near nigh £600 on the gearbox.
BANG!!!
I break the handbrake, the drivers seat and the adjuster for the passenger seat.
-
pmsl unlucky bought a lemon then!
