Title: Finally got new car!! Pics pg 5
Post by: Rivkid on May 27, 2008, 09:16:10 AM
Right had enough of making do with the Rover now. Was meant to be a 6 month thing after passing my test but now its been two years in a car with non opening front windows!!

Looking to spend around 3/4K something quick but not overpowered or expensive to insure. Been looking at the Fiat Stilo - really like my friends. Any suggestions?

DONT get a stilo.

To change the front headlight bulbs, its a bumper off job.  Better off with the model it replaced, the Bravo.
For that sort of money your in Focus/Astra territory too.

want something small and sporty really. Was thinking more Stilo, Ibiza etc... (cheers for the tip on the Stilo though that sucks)

Post by: soopahfly on May 27, 2008, 11:18:03 AM
Stilo is Astra/Focus/Golf sized, Ibiza is Polo/Punto/Corsa.

Post by: Rivkid on May 27, 2008, 11:28:29 AM
Really? Was in the schumacher edition Stilo yesterday - didnt seem anything like as big at the time. Ok well I guess that size is fine then in that case - would still like something a bit sportier/
funky lol!  8-)

Appreciate the advice btw thanks - I am car dumb I dont mind admitting!

avoid anything that has been remapped or modified in any way - as it WILL have had the dung drove out of it - without exception

If the owner says they havent, theyre lying.

If they say the timing belt has just been changed, even if they have receipts, theyre lying

Always, ALWAYS change the timing belt on a 2nd hand car as soon as you get it.

Thought IBIZAs were built on the same frame as golfs and FABIAs and A3s at one time?

Could be entirely wrong though!
Title: Re:New Car Time
Post by: Rivkid on May 27, 2008, 12:35:23 PM
If possible Im going to try and buy through a dealer. Would like the warrenty available (rac inspected etc.) plus its a good opp to get rid of the Rover!!

What does changing the timing belt do? (i.e. why do I need to do that when I buy a car?)

cheers all!

edit - just had a skoda fabia recommended to me - thoughts?
Title: Re:New Car Time
Post by: Mark on May 27, 2008, 13:00:43 PM
The timing belt is one consumable item that needs changed within a certain timescale or number of miles - it basically connects a crank driven pulley to a cam driven pulley and thus turns the camshaft(s) in time with the motion of the pistons in order to operate the valves.

Look up the recommended change interval for whatever car you decide on (NOTE - not all cars have belts - they can have internal chains) and find out if the owner/dealer claim it has been changed.

if the belt snaps, in nearly all cases, you can bend valves (at best) and wreck pistons

edited twice for horrible spelling!

those fabias are good - if its a Vrs the previous owner will probably have ragged it 24/7

A common fault on modern TDs are air flow meters going (A stoneage device) causing flat spots and hesitation

Renault Clio dci 80 from around 2003

80bhp so a decent bit of power, £20 to tax for a year, 70mpg, good to drive, low ig.
Title: Re:New Car Time
Post by: Pete on May 27, 2008, 19:04:01 PM
Clio is a good choice, practical and economical, my sis has got a 1.2 one and it works. Bit of a pain driving one but if youre only tootling round town I guess theyre ok.

Id look at the Ford Ka too if youre under 25 - dont laugh. Theyre way more fun to drive than the Clio - the handling is pretty spot on, and they cost nothing to run.

lol - I just want something that will accelerate from 50-70 in under 10 minutes. To be fair to the 414 its pretty rapid up to about 40/50 but if you want to pass a lorry doing 50/60 you need a hell of a run up.

.....oh yeah windows that open would be an improvement too!!

Mines just had one - and (apart from the non opening windows) to quote Jules.W "the motherf**kers tip top!" However mine wouldnt do a ton unless you drove it off a cliff - at 80 this morning on the A5 it was just getting to that point where it was starting to rattle and shake. Id like something smaller too as parking by my house is getting to be somewhat of an art form - even the council have agreed its too much and are looking at taking action!

the petrols can be abit fragile if not looked after but the diesels, like the one you linked, are bullet proof.

The K-Series petrol engines are awful by all accounts.  I was looking at Freelanders and 75s when i got the Veccy.  While the Veccy isnt ever going to win any awards, at least the Head Gaske doesnt blow every 15k or so (1.8 K-Series).  I was warned off them by a few folks.  One guy in particular noted that hes had his Head Gasket done twice in 4 years, so hes on the 3rd gasket on a 6 year old car.

if it went again then the garage that repaired it botched it, they dont usually go again as the problem was with the original gasket, the revised gasket was fine.

its abit of a non argument anyway as Rivkid has had a k-series before for over 2years trouble free.

yeah thats pretty much what Ive heard - once the gasket is changed its a good engine all in all. Mines at 115K and perfect still.

Leaning again toward the MG. I love them!! Plus Im 27, getting married in 2 years, planning to have kids not too long after that so this is my chance to have a car I really want. Budget was 4K so if I spend 3K on the car and stick the rest in the bank to cover the gasket if and when it goes. Hopefully going for a look around on Sunday with a few mates.

Well put down deposit today on a 55 plate Fiat Punto 1.2 active sport. Pretty nippy for a 1.2 and being the sport its got a really comfy interior. Looks great in black and with some body kit (but subtle and nice not sh*te!). Its also had the fiat logos replaced with the arbarth scorpion which I love!! Got 12 months warrenty out of them too,

Paid £2900 plus y Rover 414sli which for the year and 40 K mileage I reckon was a great deal!

Well got it last night! Love it!! Handles really well, grips the road like a bastard and for a 1.2 its damn nippy. Had no problems holding 100 on the motorway back from Manchester. Had a nightmare paying because g/fs egg card wouldnt authorise but after about 3/4 of an hour of the dealer trying to speak to some indian girl on the phone I told him to put it through in steps (1500, 500, 500 etc..) and it went through fine! Just didnt like the lump sum. Also while we were in the office some chinese kid started looking at the car having a good old nosey, then he phoned his parents who arrived 10 mins later and tried to buy the car! They didnt want to take no for an answer and tried to buy it anyway! Dealer ended up telling them to f**k off!!

Anyway - the pics

Edd - Inclined to agree with you - more power would be nice. However it does drive fantastically and for the price I wasnt going to get anything else near it so it was worth the sacrifice. Plus 2nd and 3rd gears are superbly quick so its certainly not slow.
