Built my first wheel!

Helga, of the dynamic girl bike duo went flat overnight. Pull and patch (this is getting old) and reinstall the impossibly tight 26x 1 3/8" tires. Pump. Psssssss. Take wheel into yard and beat the living crap out of it till its a figure 8. Had to be done. Fixed 13 flats in 24 hours. Dear god it felt good.

Grabbed an old front wheel with a Mavic MA3 on Sora with DT spokes. Quickly disassemble it with a drill and driver. Download a page on how to lace a three cross with two leading and one trailing. Cut out Torpedo hub from tacod wheel. Completely pull apart coaster brake and mech so I can get to the flange. Lace up a wheel--my that was a lot easier than reading about it. Reassemble hub. install rim tape and tire. Mount on bike, true and tighten. About 45 minutes total. Not bad :D

Now I have a $15 dollar alley sourced bike with a rear wheel worth 3x as much as the entire bike. It just clears the fenders with a 28mm tire. Now I just *have* to do the front.

Wheelbuilding is mighty handy. If Id had to take this hub down to get a rim and a custom build, itd been $100. So not worth it. :P

i cant get anyone to buy my mavic 519s with surly hubs (intended for my mountain bike), do you reckon theyd make a good SS wheelset for a road bike, if obviously rebuilt?

nice job by the way...

Thanks, I really should destress and true it a bit better. Hard to true by eye in a flipped over rear triangle. Its within 2mm, close enough for a utility bike, I reckon. Ill redo the front when I get around to it. I just love the fact that its a crusty old corroded German fraulinebiken, with custom wheels and proper swiss spokes. Would make a great city bike, as it looks worthless from 10 ft away. Its one of "Maxs bikes" as you might say. Front, when I get around to it, will be radially laced to look pimp. 8)

If you used the Surly hubs on a road bike, you might have to replace the axles, or at least respacer them--unless its one of those magical 132.5mm jobbers. TBH, selling them is a losing proposition, better to repurpose. Find a beater frame, mount up some slicks, and make a 26" urban screamer. :D

on a crusty bike that fine, but you sure theyre round? Number of times Ive seen wheels that were nice and flat but egg shapped when put on my jig is just not funny.

BTW it takes about an hour to knock up a reasonable jig with some wood and an old pair of front forks if you can dig em out of a dumpster someplace.

Theyre within 1mm vertically and laterally using my $1,000,000 magic pencil rubber banded to the seat stays. Good enough. :P
