Hydrolic Tappers
on: May 30, 2011, 02:32:43 AM
Anyone got any experience with these?
My FTO GPX can have these tuned rather then replaced but needs a special tool and does look like being a garage job. Nothing major but if you want the engine to sing it is these that need tightening which is apparently likely with mine.

Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience here.

Hydraulic tappets arnt usually adjustable, there isnt much to them, they are just little disks that pressurise with oil and push the valves open via the camshaft.

If your engine is abit rattley/tappy it could be one or more of the tappets are abit dirty and therefore not getting all the oil they need to pressurise, a good quality oil flush and change can clean them and fix that.

EDIT:

actually ignore pretty much everything above, a quick google and some FTO's do have adjustable tappets.

the GPX had adjustable tappets and the tool to adjust them can be bought on ebay, I wouldnt know how they need adjusting though.

I was about to say there about your info. They are not discs and I know you need a special tool. Just wondered if anyone had done something along these lines before I look to get it sorted for my WOF later in the year.

Anything other then the GPX and Mivec Engine you have to replace them but the GPX has a number of adjustment options and things like the EMS on the car so things can be tuned.

You're almost right Nexus, not just GPX, the GP Version R(The model up from a GPX) has a MIVEC engine too, so has adjustable tappets too.

Like Deviance says, get the engine oil and oil filter changed first and see what difference if any that makes.  Failing that, get the tool and get on an owners club to find out how to adjust them.  I've never done mine, they don't need doing.

Slightly on topic, but my 14 year old FTO GPX passed it's MOT today. Yeah :D

I saw :)

I have done the oil and oil filter and runs better but the tappets I think still need doing at some point. Mine passed its WOF 2 weeks before I bought it. Checking the air filter on the weekend see if that needs replacing.
