Ask MID
on: May 15, 2008, 12:58:37 PM
Hi Guys,

Just got my car insured again yest as and im going to get the TAX on it sorted out this weekend so i can my car back on the road finally! :D Anyway while i was on the Directgov site reading about taxing your vehicle etc and it mentioned the steps of what you should do before you tax your vehicle. The final step i got to was going onto this website called www.askmid.com to check weather your car is listed on there as being insured. I first checked it when the insurance became activated at 9pm last night and it said my vehicle still was not registered on the database as being insured... hhmm ok i left it and i checked it again this morning and it still says my car is not registered on the database! What do i do now? I dont want to be pulled over by the police at any point in the future thinking that my car isnt insured even though it is!

Thanks - Liam

If you insure your car, normally you have paperwork in advance of the insurance date with the start/end of the insured period?

If its yet to arrive, but you have say a confirmation email from the insurers and a phone number/reference, that should be enough to be honest. If for some reason the police decide to run a check on your car whilst youre out, and the system hasnt been updated to say its insured, so they pull you over, you should be sorted by just saying it "was insured last week and it must not have been updated on the system. Heres the insurance reference number and name of my insurers" - Police should be able to then radio in or whatever and do a check. Then you can get the "sorry for any inconvenience".

I know its a bit of a worry with insurance, each year for me I find it weird, especially when you continue with your existing insurer, get a letter through the post saying you need not do anything etc. I always find it a little worrying just in case by not doing anything, its not carried on!

Looking at the site also, they do say its the insurers responsibility to get the details on the system within 7 days. Could be a bugger if they leave it till near the end of this period if you want to tax your car electronically. But if you have the insurance certificate before its on the system, you should be sorted for getting it taxed at the post office?

Yeah it is a bit of a bugger lol but from what iv read up on other sites people have had there cars insured for years and they checked out the askmid site and then finding out there car wasnt on the database! Yeah its the insurance companys responsibility to put your car details on the database website. Yeah i spoke to my insurance company regarding the certificate this morning and they said they sent it. Should have it through the post tomorrow so i can tax the car at the post office on saturday.

Hehe cool :)

I remember last year when a lady drove into the back of me. Not much damage but garages being garages, wanted about £800 to repair it (literally all that had happened was a parking sensor had been pushed into the bumber and the rear structure was a little dented where the spare tyre was)

Quick call to the insurance, didnt even remember who I was insured with or my policy number. I started off along the lines of "Hi, I cant remember if Im insured with you or..., dont even have my policy number..." but pretty quickly after doing a few checks got all that sorted.

They then quickly ran me through what needed doing, I had a look around to see if I could get the car repaired cheaply without the lady getting her no claims dented (she was nice). In the end called back and quickly and painlessly sorted out a garage appointment and hire car. It was seriously too easy...Get off the phone with insurance, 10 mins later garage calls, arranges time to see car. Then theres a really nice hire car waiting for me and I had that indefinately until I got mine back, only needed 2 signatures the whole thing and a couple of calls to the lady to let her know what was happening/get insurance number.

It was quite pleasant and straight forward, when compared to other services like mobile phones, where they sometimes jump through hoops to get your custom and then youre stuck with long waiting times on the phone once they have you. The phone barely rang whenever I called!

So yeah, pretty off topic, but I dont think Ill ever get over how cool car insurance can be in terms of ease, so long as its not your fault haha.

in a bit of a hurry so skimmed through, looks like its sorted now...

but don;t worry about being pulled for it... its happend to me before because Id just renewed the insurance... as long as everything else is ok theyll just let you go with a producer..... so you just drop into a copshop with that and the paperwork within 10 days (iirc) and its all sorted :-)

Fingers crossed my insurance certificate will come through the post today so i can get the car taxed tomorrow, if by any chance it doesnt turn up is there anyway i can prove at the post office that my car is insured i.e. printing off the insurance details when logged into the insurance website etc? or even phoning them up direct and then putting the phone onto the person at the post office to speak to them. Or would it be a try to print off the search result for my number plate from the MID website as proof to say the car is insured?

Thanks - Liam

Update -

Ok my GF just rang me the new insurance documents have come through the post, all the documentation etc but she said there is no certificate that came in the envolope as far as she has noticed but one of the papers is like a neatly layed out documentation with all my details, insurance name & policy number/ref and all my car details etc. Would all this still be acceptable still in the post office? Someone else just said to me that its likely to be a certificate but it isnt made to look obvious on the papers etc.

Thanks - Liam

I think I got my car taxed one year using the "Cover note" which had all the details and reference number etc on. It just didnt say "Certificate of motor insurance"

Theres one way to find out though ;)

Im going to have fun in the morning.  Need to get my bus taxed so I can shift it from leeds.  V5 Says Magirus Deutz, Insurance documents and MOT certificate says Mitsubishi Delica.  Been like that since it was imported but knowing my luck they wont want to know.
