i dont see whats wrong with normal pedals and trainers they work just as good

For anyone doing a shortish daily cycle to work and back or leisure riding it hardly matters and kinkys right in this respect, for anyone doing competitive sports a foot slipping off a pedal can mean loosing a race so she would be wrong there.
she made an uninformed comment - she said they work just as good - they dont, not for a commute or a race.
The whole point of SPD, is that it increases the power per stoke, because the foot doesnt move and you get power on the upstroke to an extent, as well as the down stroke... theres more to it than that, but its a wooly explanation. in short - theyre much, much better than trainers and normal pedals.
id never commute without SPDs - they improve pedalling efficieny and i (despite being widly against them) have finally found some cannondale shoes which actually look good and work both on and off the bike.
If you dont need or dont see the benefit of SPDs, you dont ride enough to appreciate the difference.
People will always be against them for medical reasons, but on the whole they are brilliant.
