Title: New car time next year.
Post by: Walrusbonzo on November 21, 2016, 16:25:58 PM
After over eight years of owning two different Mitsubishi FTOs I think the time has come for me to buy another car. I already have a pretty good idea, but I'm wondering if anyone else can think of any other cars that fit my requirements.

 100% required
Rear wheel drive
250~bhp+
Not a rotary engine
Not convertible
Either manual or auto with paddle shifters. Definitely do not want a full auto.

Preferable
Japanese
2 seater
Purpose built coupe chassis
Under £15,000
Under 50,000 miles
Less than 6 years old (I think I would prefer something a little more modern than my very 90s FTO, and avoid rot)

So far my short list is Nissan 370z and BMW M1/M3(If I can find one that fits the requirements), and that's it. I imagine Porsche Boxters may fit in this requirements list, but know very little about them and expect maintenance costs to be bad. I suspect the Nissan wouldn't be. I had originally considered Honda S2000, but they're not coupes, and neither are BMW Z4s :(

Any other ideas? Thanks..... I remember it was someone here that suggested FTOs all them years ago :)

BMW E92 335D M-Sport Highline

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2009-59-BMW-3-0TD-335d-M-Sport-Highline-2dr-Auto-SAT-NAV-SUNROOF-19-ALLOYS-/272418136554?hash=item3f6d62e1ea:g:szAAAOSw-CpYBgs2

5.5 Seconds 0-60 when mapped
With a Switchable map you still get good MPG
350-360 mapped BHP with 540lb of torque, this is comparable to a Dodge Viper SRT which has an 8.4 litre V10 Engine
Always go for an auto when mapping as the gearboxes are stronger than manuals
38 MPG when mapped

If you go non M-Sport you might get a better deal, but you need M-Sport for the look, i would buy a 5 door though as they are a far bit cheaper.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2012-BMW-335D-M-SPORT-AUTO-BLUE-STUNNING-CAR-THROUGHOUT-VERY-LOW-MILES-HPI-CLEAR-/122226927644?hash=item1c754ae81c:g:VoMAAOSwmLlX-6dQ

You could get that for 16k and its 2012

Anybody that knows these cars will still tell you nice car when they see it, i had a 330d M-Sport it amazes me how many people knew what it was, it was badged as a 318 for fun!

does it also need to be cryogenically cooled?

Nice idea, but probably should have said that I don't want a big diesel.

Do these "auto" BMWs have paddle shifters?

I should probably say also, I don't care for practicality (Though a boot big enough for a set of gold clubs would be nice), fuel economy or having space in the back for passengers. I walk to work, so whatever I buy willl get used rarely and probably do only 4,000 miles a year. It's basically just for fun at the weekend.

In this generation / price range around 2010-2012 the diesel product as much power as the petrol engines with a mild map due to the Turbos but here is a petrol example, i would still go diesel all day for effect :D

I wouldn't write off a Boxster, you'll probably find its no more expensive than a BMW in reality on servicing (if you use an indy specialist) and you get a bonafide gorgeous sounding flat six. Bit more prestige than the other marques too if you ignore the "not a real Porsche" sheep

He'll be fine as long as it doesn't go above zero kelvin ^_^

The front boot is really deep actually, I bet a lot of them are parked up down the golf course.

Considering all boxsters appear to be convertibles I think that's a no go. But Caymans are an option. Edit: It transpires Boxsters are all convertible and the Cayman is the coupe version of the same chassis....

Something like this - http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201611039428409?price-to=15000&sort=price-asc&minimum-badge-engine-size=3.0&maximum-badge-engine-size=3.5&make=PORSCHE&postcode=le193fg&model=CAYMAN&advertising-location=at_cars&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&radius=1500&page=1

Quite high mileage, and older than I wanted. But definitely worth considering I think

I'm pretty much sold on getting a Cayman S now. Going to be an exciting 2017 getting the money together :P

I quite like the Cayman, especially the GT4!

Indeed. I'd assume that the vast majority of people who'd say that are not exactly current 911 owners either.

Probably best you don't go for a Diesel as rumour is the next scrappage scheme will be for diesels, i can wait to get £1500-2000 off the price of a new motor!

There are quite a few concerns about diesel particulate pollution and a belief that it is not possible to fix the issue. There have been a few rumors that they are going to offer options on scrapping.

Jamie do you get any Jags in ?

I need the headlight squirter that goes in the bumper 2004-2010 XJ

bought 2 on ebay and both times they didn't bother posting them :-(
(only need 1)

X-Type ?

If so i have 2 breaking i think

Post by: knighty on June 27, 2017, 19:42:18 PM
XJ :-(

(mines an xjr, but xj is same bumper and a lot more common)

it's crazy, the squirters are £50 each used !

but... it's £150 for a whole bumper... which has 4 of them :-o

they're flush with the bumper and then pop up and squirt the headlights every 6th time you press the windscreen squirter

don't really care about them working, but there's a hole where one should be right now :-(

Test drove a Porsche Cayman S last weekend, got another one lined up for this weekend. Feeling good about this one, it's better value than the last one due to lower mileage and many more optional extras.

2010
15,600 miles
987 Gen 2 model
3.4 litre flat 6
7 speed PDK gearbox

Key Optional Extras :-
Flappy paddle steering wheel
LSD
Porsche Active Suspension Management
Sports Chrono Plus
Sports Exhaust
BOSE Sound System

Porsche approved from Porsche Silverstone, 2 year Porsche warranty and European breakdown cover.

Pretty excited right now. Will post up pics if I go through and buy it. Here is a video they did for me in the meantime - https://video.citnow.com/vtGC-YhXF1n

looks really nice and I bet it's fun to drive too

you should go on one of those track days where it's just you and an instructor/guy in the car with you... can't remember what they're called

I quite fancy doing one myself, it's a bit crap having a fast car and never being able to give it a push on the roads because it picks up speed too quickly :-s

well 36 of my points are 6 counts of not replying to the NIP notice after a speed camera (6 points each time) - but I was just out of hospital with a brain injury so couldn't reply, I wasn't driving, it was the guys working for me.... so they let me keep my license

pulled over in a work van by VOSA a few weeks back (when they pull over loads of vans/trucks to check them over) - cop there said I 39... no idea where they extra 3 came from

Its 150bhp standard but has a mild map it pulls like a train and wheelspins 1st to 2nd gear which is mental for a diesel! I tread it like utter sh*t, was looking for a new car as i had it almost 5 years but im going to get the belt done and drive it into the floor

I've put my FTO up for sale, but in all honesty, having taken it out for a drive today I think I may regret it deeply.

What to do?  :-\

It's not practical for me to have two weekend cars, and it shouldn't matter now I have the Cayman, but Ron is so fun to drive :(

Just sell it while its still in good shape and not languishing. Find a decent buyer on Pistonheads that will look after it.

Already got several interested parties. Put it up for sale in the FTO owners club on Saturday and had two people seriously interested in less than an hour. Just can't do it right now.

It's great, absolutely loving it. Quite a bit faster and more refined. But I think I generally have more "fun" driving the FTO.

That's why I think I'd be happy with a classic Boxster instead of one of the newer ones, bit more raw, nicer engine (and cheaper!) Money pit baby comes first though

Has there been a creep up in used FTO prices? Most Japanese marquees of the era have seen steady climbs as shabby examples go beyond economical repair.

How much is it costing you a year? You could SORN it, but if it just sits doing absolutely nothing it's going to probably be better for the car if you don't, even if you give it very light usage.

Has it got any rust, or any proper niggles? If so head says get rid even if heart says no, if you're not able to give it your full attention they'll get on top of you and likely trash the car, or at the very least give you further unwanted bills for remedial work.

If it's a manual, the mileage is low and the condition is good you know that's the most desirable combination and most likely to appreciate if the prices have bottomed out, ultimately it's up to you, but when it's gone with so few left I doubt you'd ever get it back.

If you really do have more fun driving the FTO perhaps you're thinking of selling the wrong car! :o

Whatever you end up doing, you'll probably regret it, such is life

Car prices are bound to move a bit, especially with the drop in the value of the pound.  Rarer imports will go up in price.
