Title: New speakers
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on February 17, 2007, 19:38:00 PM
Okay, I tried to fit new some new 10cm speakers into my headrest this morning and somehow this has failed miserably.

It should have been a straight swap, both sets of speakers have the same corresponding spade plug (one thin, one thicker) and it all marries up right, but after switching on the stereo I get absolutely no sound

Ive not had to change anything except plugs from one set to the other, what have I missed or done wrong?

Can you put the old ones back on to verify if theres any electricals coming out of the wires?

Im trying that in the morning, I was pressed for time today, so fitted them, found out there was no sound, and had to postpone.

Test both with your home stereo.

Just to be clear there is two sets of 2 speakers, 2 in each headrest, so the likely hood of both pairs being faulty is unlikely.
Title: Re:New speakers
Post by: DEViANCE on February 17, 2007, 20:52:04 PM
so there is 4 wires in each head rest?

Did you check they were the same impedence?
Title: Re:New speakers
Post by: soopahfly on February 18, 2007, 00:04:52 AM
impedance wouldnt stop them playing completely

Should still have some output, even if the ohmage is off. Arent virtually all car stereos 8 ohms these day? Been ten years since I bothered installing one myself.

Why did you change them, I take it the old ones were working?

Yeah one was knackered and they were pretty crap anyway, so I figured upgrade time.

4 wires each headrest.

Home speakers are 8 ohms, think car ones are four ohms IIRC. Some car ones are 2 ohms and some eight, most should still be four. Still should work, providing Clockd hasnt done some terminal damage to the sterio system :o

Clockd, if you have a multimeter check the resistance of the speakers. TBH it should be printed on them somewhere.

is it possible you got the 2+ and 2- mixed up, if that makes sense?

i.e. you hve the the possitive on one speaker and the negative that is meant to go with it, is on the other speaker and vice versa...

fair enough, dont know what else it could be then tbh. speakers are normally easy.

see if the old ones still work is the first thing to do i guess.

If you touched the wires together with the amp on you probably blew the output transistors.  Otherwise, check the wires with a meter and see if youre getting anything out of them.

I dont have an external amp, it should all be running off the HU. Wiring is exactly like the pics Nathan posted, one fat spade connector and one thin for each speaker, marries up fine.

Anyway cheers guys, Im off out now to try fitting the old ones, will report back ASAP...

Check the fuse on the back of the hu and the fuse in the box thats impossible to find to the right of the steering wheel.

Had other things going on so have only just got around to testing the speakers. I had sound for about 1 second when I put one of the speakers back on. I think the HU isnt up to the job.

Oh yeah there are door speakers as well and these should work still but dont, so it pretty much has to be the HU now I reckon. Im off to buy booze, its been a long day sorting out that car.

Thank Jebus youre not in the Holler--sales of hootch are illegal on Sunday. That said...the same applies in Sweden...maybe theyre not bitter commie atheists after all, but closet Baptists~!

/random

FWIW, a basic decent head unit is dirt cheap these days. Around here$100 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pioneer-In-Dash-CD-Player-DEH-P3700MP/sem/rpsm/oid/115948/catOid/-13089/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) will get you something just fine. Not worth spending more on something thats got a soft top anyway.

One Catholic church I have been in had a fully fitted pub in the crypt. Ideal, you go in, have some singing, go downstairs, get a bit drunk and sing some more... :ptu:

Why doesnt a head unit give you head?

I think Ill get that Kenwood in a couple of months time then. Ive absolutely no money now, so Ill have to have no sound for a while, not that it bothers me that much.

On the sidenote, I think we should be able to buy drink, food, cigs and drugs 24x7, even our Sunday trading law is a joke. This is United mofoin Kingdom, not some backwards state. Screw Jebus.

Sunday trading law isnt a joke for those who have to work it.

People get paid more for Sundays a lot of the time anyway, hardly worth complaining about. You dont have to take a job where you work Sundays after all.

Ive worked many a Sunday. Never gotten extra for it. Its just a day. The UKs Sunday Trading Act is socialist nonsense--and thats coming from a guy that leans left. ;)

Not any more. Plenty of people have no other choice. TBH I would say that the law should be double wages on a Sunday. Really though it should be a Saturday, except those arranging it didnt like the Jews for some reason. Muslims have the same issue, except for them it went to being Friday cause Sunday was already taken by Christians.

Set up by Conservatives (read Republicans for USA) to make sure as many people could attend as possible. It was well before the Labour party existed too :P

And I would say that youre a theist Marxiapan lunatic. Is gravity stronger on Sundays making work more difficult?

If you truly believe that you need to attend a incensed Pajama Dance with a transmogrified buffet--then youre probably wise enough to know that pew seating is less congested on weekdays anyway.

As I said, its much earlier - nothing to do with Marxisim either. The Capitalist oppressors wanted all the people indoctrinated into the church so they made it possible that as many of them could attend as possible. This enabled them to brainwash people into thinking that hard work was next to godliness and that they should accept the status quo. This meant the UK ending up with higher pay on Sundays to encourage bosses to let the workers have the time off.

RESULT

You will all LYAO.

Turns out the zipper that fastens the heardests back up was shorting out the speakers if it came into contact with them

A quick fitment adjustment and now I have nice, loud bassy speakers  I shall still be getting a new HU though as the CD player in the current one is utter gash and wont read half my discs.

Blow the crap off the laser lens and it should work just fine. :P I just "fixed" my $30 DVD player this way, well, I took off the top and cleaned the lens with a swab and some window cleaner. Anything fancy looking in there= slashed top.

Back in the days of dual dial stuff, I got a pretty good HU and found a awful woodgrain fascia for it.  :ptu: Id then put my "cassette of doom"* halfway hanging out when parked. Thats security! :D

*regular cassette with an ominous tangle of tape hanging outside of it.

Nice stealthy approach there then

In all seriousness though, its a bag of crap and wont play MP3 CDs or copies, which isnt good enough for me frankly as I dont want my originals leaving the house. So new HU it is.

Too bad you guys dont have satellite radio yet. XM (http://www.xmradio.com/) capable HUs have come down to about $120 over here, and though they usually do CD and mp3, theres enough amazing stations to just let DJs do the selection. Even Bob Dylan has his own show (http://www.xmradio.com/bobdylan/index.xmc) on XM. :D
