Title: New Tyres - how to?
Post by: addictweb on July 15, 2012, 11:38:42 AM
As I left Heathrow airport last night something put a massive hole in my rear offside tyre, I felt it go straight away at about 60 on the M4, pulled over and changed it for the spare.

This morning it also looks like whatever it was has put a slow puncture in my front offside.

This is the first time I've had to get new tyres in London (away from the garage I trust back home), what do you guys do?

 - Go to some standard Tyres 4 u r us and pay them to sort it
 - Order tyres online then get them fitted elsewhere

Cheers.

Most order online places will offer a fitting on your doorstep type service, I'd opt for that as if you go to a generic tyre fitter they will rip you off for sure.

I bought tyres from http://www.camskill.co.uk/ before and had a local indy place fit them, worked out cheaper than letting them supply and fit, it might not always be the case though.

Its worth phoning around for 5-6quotes from different places to be sure its worth it also spend abit extra on a known brand, the cheapest are usually ditch finders.

I've used both http://www.mytyres.co.uk (http://www.mytyres.co.uk) and http://www.blackcircles.com/ (http://www.blackcircles.com/) before. Couldn't say how competitive their prices are with other online firms but blackcircles also offer Clubcard points if that's any bonus to you.

http://www.etyres.co.uk/ (http://www.etyres.co.uk/) offer an on the driveway service

I get Part Worn's locally for £15 fitted, budgets namely Sava's (which i've done 100k+ miles on, and would thoroughly recommend) for £40 ish fitted, i've never used anything else.

I've got SAVA's on the Skoda (came with them) and it can be fun going straight on at corners and then the back end sliding around when you correct it but after a while it gets boring  :gag:

I had a similar experience in my chipped Chipped Mondeo 2L TDCI when I bought it, it had Linglongs, in the wet you didn't want the turbo to kick in  :o

Whatever you do if you want some form of grip in the wet don't go for cheepo tyres!

as above.... cheap tyres just aren't worth it... decent tyres make a massive difference

you don't need to buy the expensive ones.... just get a brand you recognise the name of, or look at the prices and pick one in the mid range...

they're not even that much more expensive than cheap ones :o

The compounds used for more expensive branded tyres can often last longer than cheap tyres anyway, its a false economy.

Thanks all. Have had to book into Kwik fit as I need them done before Saturday and work 9-5 Mon - Fri. Prices didnt seem too drastically different.

Will make my decision on the value vs branded depending on if I need one or two new tyres.
