Funny running since HG Change

Since getting the moneypit back from the garage, its been running a little strange.

The idle is a little lumpy and black water spots are coming out the exhaust.
Checked the usual suspects, all sensors plugged in and secure, the vacuum hose to the ECU is connected.

Its quite thirsty now. We used to get at least 200 miles to £20 (give or take a little for recent fuel hikes) but now its no more than 150miles and your on fumes.

Its gone from 47MPG to 35.
I though it could be the ECU learning its settings but its covered a good few hundred miles!

A guy on FiatForum says this
Quote
It sounds like the camshaft pulley moved a bit.. maybe a tooth or two "out".

Sound plausable?  Ive got no faith in the garage that did the work.  Less faith than I had in myself to do it properly.
Bloody school leavers.

sounds like timing which could be the same as the fiat guy said.

whip the cover off and check the timing?  should be easy enough to check.

Its a case of taking the cam cover off and a wheel to check the alignments.

Its not massively lumpy, but both of us noticed it didnt seem *quite* happy.
Its got power and its very nippy still but suffered a 15mpg hit!  Thats like the MPG of my bus!

Better checking the mechanical timing regardless, its not something you can afford to leave unchecked.

Other options to consider are that the job was f**ked up (Especially if done by fitters), and you need another head gasket doing.

What way is the temperature behaving itself
