Buying Tyres
on: October 02, 2007, 13:09:35 PM
Hi all, bit of advice would be appreciated :)

I need to get 2 new treads for my car (1.8 Vectra).  At the moment it has 2xEagle NCT5s on the front, with 1 Conti Premium Contact and some brand ive never heard of on the back, with a Dunlop in the spare wheel well.  The Dunlop has 2 nails in it, and the no-brand is only just legal, so its time to get some before i need them desperately.

Im looking at Blackcircles, and i was considering just getting 2 more NCT5s for the car, however Im not sure about the Goodyear Hydrogrip tyres.  Whatever I get is likely gogin to go on the front, and the NCT5s moved to the back because i like to cycle my tyres when they need it.  Any other suggestions? Other than pirelli P6s, i had those on another car, and they are far too soft for me!

If youre happy with the performance of the NCT5s stick with them on all four corners. Theres no benefit at all to having different tyres each end of the car with different road grip characteristics.

was thinking along those lines, its only just over £50 per corner fitted, and "Cheap" tyres are only £10 cheaper.  I usually keep axle sets identical when i can.

Have a look at http://www.etyres.co.uk/ mate. They do a free mobile fitting serivce, which means less effort for you!! When I got my last tyres, I used blackcircles, but after I checked etyres and they were only £5 more per wheel compared to blackcircles. Which I didnt think was too bad tbh.

I eventually got round to it with payday arriving!   All i can say is that im glad I waited.  Ive opted for some Hydragrips in the end, the NCT5s are nice, quiet and well branded.  However ive had to let them deal with cold and wet.  Cold they are fine, wet they arent too bad, when its cold AND wet at the same time they are downright dangerous.  They slip and slide all over the place unless you drive completely off the gas and treat the car like its a 1.1L!

ditch the unbranded & the nailed dunlop & put them on the car with new tyres.
put the other dunlop in the boot as the spare.

already organised, the NCT5s are going on the back, and the Hydragrips are going on the front.  the conti is getting kept as the spare as its not directional, and its got plenty of tread left.  Im keeping this car another 2 or 3 years, so ill not have to buy any more tyres.  If i was keeping it 6 months I would just have got the £30 part works from the crap garage down the road.

ahh, but im paying for my own rather than the leasing company paying for them :p  My old Astra GTE used to eat a set of P6000s in 3-4 months though.

Ended up with a set of Fulda Carat Progresso, and its raining at the moment, the diference is remarkable.

They hadnt got the right size Hydragrips in, and it was gonna be the end of next week if was really specific and wanted them. They had put H-Rate in place of the VRated tyres I have on mine.

what speed is H rated for ?

iirc V is 140mpg ? (maybe 145?)...I onle know because last time I got some tyres they were going to get me ones rated to 130 and I made them bump it up a bit just incase ;)  (tho i doubt many people here go that fast anyway)

checked, V is 149mph
H is 130

The car does H-Rate type speeds anyway, at least according to the clock when i was flying down some "Private" Tarmac.  The V-Rates are what is recommended, so ive gone with them.

*chuckle* I should probably have been clearer.  In the rack at the tyre place they had 7 Hydragrips in the V-Rate rack>  When they dude was looking then where all h-Rate tyres.  So it was Fuldas, or some more NCT5s, and im not impressed with the NCT5s when its cold and raining.  If you point your wheels any direction but straight ahead they feel like they are about to let go, and they arent exactly confidence inspring.  Im surprised with the Fuldas, last thing I had Fulda tyres on was a Mk1 Golf GTi, and that was in 1996.
