Im not claiming that I dont speed, as you say everyone does. Personally though I stick strictly to 30/40/50 limits and am only occasionally liberal with the national speed limit.

If you get caught you werent paying enough attention to the road to spot the camera TBPH.

They seem to think that my VW Transporter is classed as a commercial van despite it stating PLG on the V5 document. Commercial vans have to do -10mph of the offical speed limits apparently but my van is for private use and has a rear window.

Our subbie has a problem with this atm - apparently there is no legal definition of a commercial vehicle that stands up - his Astra van has rear windows but blanked sides, and no seats in the back. His legal advice has been that although strictly a commercial vehicle, because based on a car bodyshell he may get away with it. If you had seats in the back you could be surer...

Ive always Known a van to be having no windows to the rear of the front doors, on the side, it doesnt matter about the back door.

Speeding tickets are simply a revenue generator, not a safety device. Im not saying that in defense of my own behavior, as I usually drive pretty close to the limit, as speeding within urban areas isnt worth it. Its especially silly on local motorways, where theres a 55mph posted limit in the city, but *everybody* does 75. Youd be a fool to drive 55 as it would be dangerous, albeit legal. Authorities who want safer roads should have patrol cars out to ticket people for poor driving habits, egregious speeders (not those that picked up 5mph going downhill by accident), bad lane discipline, dangerous passing, not yielding, blah blah blah. Give people leeway when it comes to speeding. Making the public obsess about being a mere 5mph over makes folks more likely to be looking at the speedo vs. paying attention to the road.

I agree, too many dickwits on the road. Nearly every journey I see idiocy and lunacy on the road and it enrages me. This past month Ive had a car spin out in front of me, a white van man pull out to the right hand lane at 80mph, metres in front of me, with no indication. Cue harsh braking, horn and venomous abuse from me. Then, again on the motorway, contemptible tosspot sat in the outside lane on an empty motorway doing 70mph. I indicate and move across - early - from the left to overtake a lorry and keep to my 75mph to have him pull in 10 seconds later the very moment in next to him and nearly smack straight into the side of me. More horn and swearing.

These people need to be booked, not people doing a reasonable speed on the road for the conditions. You can read the road ahead for dangers and to assess risk, you cant plan for utter dickheads without an ounce of spatial awareness swinging widly across lanes.

I NEVER speed.............. when there are cameras.

I use my brain to decide a safe speed on a particular road not listen to a bureaucrat behind a desk rubbing there hands together.

im pretty sure that vans over 2000kgs GVW still have to abide by the commercial rules

never heard of the weight limit thing before... but it should be under that... a enpty extra high top extra long wheel base transit van with a tail lift on the back is only just over that :)

i wouldnt be bothered by speed cameras if they were outside schools, next to accident black spots etc... but there just there for the money :(

the only good place Ive seen them is on the A1 north of Newcastle (notorious single carriage way).... youll be stuck behind a lorry going up and hill at 35mph, and youll think is there room to overtake ?, youll have a look and think Ill wait a bit longer till I can see beter... then you see the sign saying "376 people died here in the last 12 months" and you decide just to stay behind that lorry :)

im not sure about it, but weve got vauxhall combos at work for most of the "fleet" and theyre 1700kgs fully laden and have the same speed limits as cars
but weve just got some new transit connects which are 2000kgs fully laden and they have the 55 on A roads, 60 on dual carriageway and 70 on motorway restrictions

I just got back from a month in France and I got one today too!

But ... i am going to dispute it as i was caught doing 59mph in a 60mph zone. They seem to think that my VW Transporter is classed as a commercial van despite it stating PLG on the V5 document. Commercial vans have to do -10mph of the offical speed limits apparently but my van is for private use and has a rear window.

just realised... PLG just means under the 3500 limit you move to with HGV

my transit vans are all classed as PLG

2 of my pet hates relates to speed.

Those who slow right down in national speed limit zoes to 40, 50 MPH (/Edit .....for a speed camera), its just dangerous.  Also those who do 40 under national speed limit and continue to do so in a 30.

Im no saint, I dont think anyone will ever claim to be.  But I do have a lot of respect for 20 & 30 zones especially. I wont be caught out becuase I was going a speed where I couldnt stop for the kid who came out behind the car or whatever.

Im usually one to sit at the speed limit becuase Im quite happy to do that most of the time.  If Im in the mood to get a move on its usaully under 50/60/70 zones and use my own judgement for a safe speed.  If Im ever caught itll probably be on a dual carrigeway/motorway.

Bad luck chap.

I swear if another person does this to me on a single carriageway I will strap a minigun to the roof of my Clio.

It narks me off especially so because I know the car doesnt have to capacity to overtake lorries effectively, let alone oomph it safely past cars. I could put the hours of my life wasted sat behind these morons to good use.
