I dont believe that at all, I really dont see how there can be no way of stopping or at least slowing the car either by sticking it in neutral or turning off the ignition and therefore killing the engine running. It seems a bit suspect.

I dont know what model it was, but some of them have an electronic gearbox - the dash mounted shifter isnt directly connected to the gearbox - so it is possible that an electronic fault could prevent gears being disengaged.

On some of them the ECU controls engine and box.

A few are also supposed to lock they key while in motion, so you cant just turn the engine off. Actually managing to do this would cause the power steering to fail resulting in impossible steering.

The steering would be difficult more than impossible - Ive driven an old Scania 94 before with failed steering and it was possible to move it, but it was pretty heavy.

When youre moving you dont really notice it though

Power steering only affects low speed turning on anything but a truck I would have thought?

my powersteering has a spaz sometimes and i cant turn the wheel at all. Its quite scary cause ive nearly driven into other cars when its decided to have a spaz. luckily its always at low speeds <10mph

I was driving an auction car back one day on the m5 when the engine turned itself off, something to do with the engine management i think, the steering wheel was a nightmare to control, i was in the outside lane doing 70mph and tbh i sh*t bricks   i thought that was it my first major motorway collision. The car in question was a 307.

They recalled a load of the explorers due to a fault with the power steering, there were actually quite a few crashes because of it!

I think they were shorter accidents, where the drivers were more caught by surprise, not sure why he didnt just switch it off, or stand on the brakes?

most of these turn out to be rubbish after the vehicle is inspected
