Garages

Some of you may have experience that could be useful here so thats mainly why im posting.

Usually i avoid using garages, but sometimes you cant avoid it.. MOT.

I took a car to a garage, specifically for a rolling road remap and an MOT, it would never have passed without the remap.

They did that and called me up, failed on a CV boot and sommit else, fair enuff, they had the car so i just asked them to sort it.

They had some issues with the mapping so ended up having the car for a week and a half.

Now i collected it friday, fairly unimpressed to start with as its covered in dust (fair enuff), the cream carpet is covered in black dirt (was clean when i took it in) and theres messy hand prints on the cream leather.. at this point i think oh well i can clean that up, im just glad to have my car back so pays the bill (with the mapping and other issues it was over £800) and drives it home.

Great so far. Now i like to know exactly whats going on with my cars and i wanted some better brake performance so i jacked it up today to have a look, theres the new CV boot and.. oh dear, the bottom ball joint rubber is split, now thats an MOT failure and the wishbone that the ball joint is on was replaced less than 10 miles ago so i know it was ok before they had it.

So as im sure you can imagine im not happy. Going to call them about it but im not sure what my rights are nor what to really say other than tell them what the problem is, what can i demand? or at least ask for? i dont wanna call up and look a fool tbh.

Anyone had anything similar?

Never as I dont use garages - but on to the mapping

To be sure you get a good mapper, look on the owners forums etc and find who everyone is recommending, and IGNORE that. That will usually give you a good idea of who to avoid.

If they claim to be a specialist in one type of ECU - forget them also, theyre just bluffers who have been on a 2 day manufacturer training course.

Next, find out who the local rally men/track preparers/engine builders are using, and go and compare them.

I have found that most of the guys popular on forums etc are just total bullsh*tters with no real experience, or with a weekend course in one specific type of ECU. Some of the sh*te they spew is absolutely unbelievable. They try and blind their customers with science.

If youre near dave walker Id try and get to him (He writes for PPC magazine)

I would also expect to pay NO MORE than £300 for mapping. (Maybe 400 with a real big name tuner like Dave Rowe or Dave Walker)

You need to call them up and explain that the balljoint rubber is split and it wasnt before as its just new.

Also - do you have a wideband oxygen sensor? It would be good to see if they left your car running properly.

They would have more than likely to undo the bottom ball joint for the cv boot, so it could have split then, but its not a mot failure.
Hard to say, ring and say its new and was ok before it went for its mot, see if they offer to replace it.

I think this is who 2 guys at work have been to.  one with a Leon Cupra-R and one with an Evo 7.
