They should recall all 1998 Renault Clios. Period. Melt them and start again.

it was probably a marketing stunt to point out that a lot of Mk1s are still driving about.

Generally being awake is enough for me.

Seeing as we may well do - maybe - up to 500 cars a year, going to one of the maybe 30 scrapyards or maybe 100 dealers I would go to a year I would see far more of them

At that extreme age it would be tight, but certainly early to mid eighties - 309s, 205s etc etc - they go on forever, especially the diesels.

I dont know if it would be possible to get stats from anywhere

the fact is - when they first came out, VWs were competing with cars that were poorly built - due to industrial action and what not - nowadays theyre no better than the likes of anything ford or vauxhall do, except they are exceptionally overpriced. The reputation for reliability has stuck.

Strangely i dont think i have seen an MK1 Golf for years - cannot even remember seing one last where i live but i have seen them in other areas of the UK but the most common 80s cars i still see being driven around as Mark said are 205s commonly etc.

and youre not even going to try and google for stats, so well just rely on your opinion eh?!

how many french cars were produced during your chosen period? how many VW?
what percentage of french are still on the roads? versus vw? etc etc.

I wish there were a way to check that, cos i dont believe your statement.

All you have to do is check customer satisfaction ratings, VWs arent top anymore, at least not on the ones I have seen - those that are almost inevitably come from the far east.

Example

36     Volkswagen Golf < highest rated VW
    49     Volkswagen Polo < next

he shoots, he misses. marks statement was, far more french cars are on the road than old golfs.

strictly speaking, there were a hell of a lot more peugout and citroens build than vw golfs. its not a very subjective statement. so to reference what owners think of their cars in terms of reliability doesnt even count.

I would agree that there are probably more 1990 era french cars still on the roads, however ive not seen a really old 205 or similar for ages. Only person I know with a Pug even approaching that age is a C-Reg 205 with a Dimma kit.

VW are known for how well their older models last. I see alot of mk1 golfs about, some mint, some not so mint. But theyre around!

Then you have the amount of old beetles and buses, etc.

German reliability FTW :) My 16 year old golf never skips a beat and drives better than alot of newer cars Ive driven! Not a patch o rust either ;)

There were 1.5 million more golf mk1s built than (for example) peugeot 205s

5.3 mil 205s
6.8 million mk 1 golfs

if we look at mk 2

There were 6.3 million golf Mk 2s built

This makes sense, as they were exported to the US, most french cars werent.

Almost 25 million beetles have been built - or - more than peugeots (all models) in the 1990s

I really have no idea what you guys are arguing about.

Although I see more beetles than mk1 golfs, although it can all depend on the area you live in.

I wouldnt mind having a beetle myself, might be fun to drive one of those...

Im sure there are exact stats of what cars are on the road somewhere.

I recon there are more 90s Rovers on the road than any other makes  -)

Driving an old Beetle can be described as many things, but fun isnt one of them.  Only one Ive liked driving was the custom one a mate and me did a few years back.  Used a Mk1 Golf GTi as a donor to turn it into a 1.6 Water cooled, with the Mk1 dashboard and its only 2 seat now.

Itd be fun driving the beetle this guy rebuilt with a Volvo T5 Engine and then put a different ECU on it and giving 300BHP!
