Title: What do people think of Boxsters?
Post by: chrisdicko on December 17, 2007, 12:12:14 PM
Might be a stupid idea of mine, but I fancy getting a Boxster.

Unfortunately it will be quite old.....like 1999. I know some people will say theyre womens/hairdressers/gays cars, but I dont ;)

How much will it cost to run generally?? It will cost about £400 more per year in insurance than my current car, but what else is expensive with them?? As a lad at work said brake pads etc are expensive, which Ive looked, are they arent TBH. Now fuel will cost a bit more than I currently spend, as a drive a diesel 320 atm, but how bad are they?? Anything else which anyone knows goes wrong with them, like the electric roofs etc?

7-8yrs aint old unless its a Vauxhall, Ford or French or (edit) Rover. The 2.7 gets 28mpg which isnt too bad.

Image, I cant really talk but theyre more middle management/MLC than hairdresser. In the right colour with the right wheels they can look cool.

I guess something like an RX8 or a TiT youd get a lot newer for the same money but thing with the Porsche is most people wont see past the "Porsche" brand, and as such its a good choice.

edit: deleted the 3 instances of "imo" :)

Yeah, my thoughts exactly!

Just looking more, the 2.5 gets around 27MPG motorway, and 20MG round town etc. Which is half what im getting now on average (currently at 41MPG on the OBC on my derv BMW.

Do it before you get too old. Petrol wont be that bad unless youre doing space shuttle mileage.

na, I dont do too many miles. Deffo less than 10k a year. Im only 24, so still a bit of time, but do fancy one now! Just need to decide if I can afford it really, as I bought a flat in Sept, so still seeing if I can afford everything or not tbh.

They are great handling, but they are pretty slow at that vintage - even the 2.7 isnt that hot.

Youll quickly get fed up with chavs/spides in focus STs and the likes leaving you for dead, and will want more power.

Parts are unbelievably expensive for small things, and they are ridiculously sore on petrol if you drive them the way they are meant to be, but they do handle well. If you go to a garage for a service rather than do it yourself, I think its about £5-600.

The stereo is pretty good

Well tbh I cant afford a 911! lol.

Egg, where have I moaned im skint? I have said I dont have a lot of spare money now ive bought my flat, but if I got rid of my bmw, id be able to buy the boxster. Its just running costs which im worried about.......like Mark has obviously said, it drinks petrol....which I wouldnt particularly want. What parts are expensive Mark? I only looked for aftermarket brake pads and there were fine, but tbh could imagine the expense.

i imagine the parts for ur beamer are pretty expensive, so im pretty sure that porsche parts are gonna be 10-20% more

There are similar types of cars out there for less money, as mentioned before the TT, the RX8. The S2000 is a bloody good buy also, id weigh up all the options first

lol, thought you maybe did egg!

Kunal, around £10k for a 1999 2.5L one, with around 60k on the clock.

I wouldnt have minded a Porsche........just because its a Porsche really  Dont fancy a TT really, as Id have to get the old shape....which I dont like compared to the new one. Might look in to RX8s though.

My cousin has pretty much exactly that car even the same year.

Its OK, but Marks right it isnt that fast and hes sank a lot of cash into it.

You dead set on a conv? If you were then Id be seriously looking at a Honda S2000, theyre loads of fun and very reliable.

Theres always the 964 if you want a 911

Thats exactly what I always say, and there are better cars out than the Boxter IMO.

More QFT, but I gather the TT isnt a hot drive, just another buy-for-badge.

RX8 is an oil guzzler though, but a very nice car with a great engine, I even had a little spin in one alongside the latest MX-5. Cant fault Mazdas IMO. Id also be considering the S2000.

I know it sounds a bit old man, it certainly does to me, but. Pay off as much of your mortgage as you can in the next couple of years, it may slow you down doing things you want but the less you owe then the less you pay in interest. That means you will have more money in a couple of years to buy either a better car or do something else.

OTOH if you really want one then take a test drive and see what its like.

To true!

I still want my youth I want a damned 3door Golf Mark 2 1.8-T!!! But no she says its not practicle and where would the child seat go?

Yeah never let a woman tie you down, simply say this "shut up, get your own driving licence and car and drive your own arse around!"

Yeah, I know a lad who had a 1.8T TT and he said it was boring tbh.

Serious, you are right, I should pay more off my mortgage, but I love cars, and driving.....so want to always have a half decent one really! Ill probably regret saying that when im 40, and wish I had.....but, you need to live for the day!

Poison, the cars on there are out of my price range tbh, although they are very nice.

At 24 your insurace might not be fun but I actually quite like the 3.2 Boxster S.  Im guilty of calling the Boxster a poor mans porsche too but seriously considering buying one of my mates since test driving it theyre really fun to throw around.  Not 911 class obviously but you wont be picking up a decent 2nd hand 911 for 12k

Running costs are way higher than my 3 series though.  Hes downgrading to a new 3 series since the running costs of the porsche service/petrol/insurance is so high.  The guys got a decent job etc and lives in the north east so no real expenses so it may be worth double checking how much spare cash you have every month.  Its the running costs that are putting me off.

TBH, there is only one or two things Id consider at that money

Number one would be an R33 GT-R

Thats going to be the fastest thing youll get, and with a little dough, seriously fast.

Number 2 would be as new a Supra TT as possible.

Im sniffing around an R33 GT-R at the minute, trying to get the guy to come down a few £££ :)

German cars, including porkers, as much as it pains me to admit it, are hopelessly, HOPELESSLY outclassed by the liner.

Just as new a TT supra as possible - they stopped making them a while back.
LOADS on import though.

try greenlight for insurance for the GTR

They will be ok on fuel on cruise, but crazy on it on boost.

Try greenlightinsurance - it will be cheaper, even elephant

I got a quote of £4000 off confused for my car, then £700 from greenlight

What did you decide in the end?

Im looking to pick up a 3.2 S on wednesday (X reg, 70k on clock for ~£13k before negotiation).  Its not a bargain but its spotless, drives flawlessly and is significantly above base spec (feel sorry for the person who paid for all the extras at purchase as they dont seem to be reflected in the 2nd hand price at all).

I think I may well be putting a lot of things in for sale and wanted over the next couple of weeks as I would like to keep my day to day car for a bit.  Its amazing what 4 months living with a BMW 318 that can barely break 16 secs 0-60 will do to you (porsche takes about 6 secs 0-60 and is at 100 by the time youre halfway through the gearbox).  That said I stepped out of a pretty zippy mk5 golf gti and the porsche simply destroyed the driving experience in every single way (except back seats).

I think its probably the nicest driving car Ive ever been let loose in.  Not the fastest or the most expensive but the most fun.  [The most fun was either in a 2.48 sec 0-60 Dax Rush or the Tamora, but in both I always thought I was moments from death and they needed more driving skill than I have unfortunatley - not very practical for me].

Now, if only I can find a way to make it look like an old estate car to everyone else...

Boxster = too poor for a 911?

lol. What does a 04 Vectra or Mondeo say? "Im a nerd who likes fat birds with 14 kids."

A Skyline is gonna put 12 point on your license as soon as you step in it and/or get you pulled over twice a mile. A Boxster isnt.

And wot red said. Unless its a mini and you got 3k spare and a garage.

Boxster = too poor for a 911?

yeah, I have no problem with that.  I know I cant afford a 911 for a long while yet (not even 100% sure I can afford this one haha).  When I can afford a 911 Ill no doubt have too many responsibilities to buy one anyway so think its the time to give an impractical car a whirl. :)

It is a shame you have to wade through the hairdresser/gay jokes tho because the car is frankly outstanding.  As long as the car keeps making me smile like an idiot whenever I turn a corner Ill put up with the grief from the lads.

Im actually considering cancelling my plane ticket to Valencia in Feb, setting off a couple of days early and driving down instead.  Not wanted to do something like that in a car before outside of rallys.  Ive never got out of a gti/type-R and thought about an extra trip to the shops just so I could drive it again.

edit: oh btw, for the OP I looked at running costs in quite a lot of detail.  The petrol costs of this one are a bit higher than the 2.5/2.7s since its the 3.2litre S version but its still ~20mpg which isnt crazy.  The brake pads and all the little stuff arent cheap but again not crazy assuming you pick a good dealer and are used to BMW parts anyway.  The biggest unexpected cost appears to be tyres.  The boxster will eat rear tyres if you let it.  You can choose compounds and alignments to reduce this but something to be aware of.  Also, you cant just swap them forwards as the back and front wheels are different.
Title: Re:What do people think of Boxsters?
Post by: Pete on December 30, 2007, 05:06:37 AM
If you buy from a dealer its important to check the tyres. Ive known a few wholl put the car up with a brand new set and then change them for a knackered set on delivery.

Good advice steve. Im still undecided TBH. As id only be able to afford a 10 year old one.....which tbh, im not sure about as at that age id imagine a lot of problems arising, which I couldnt really afford to fix if it was anything half major...........

I could get a lot newer RX8 which would probably give me a lot less problems.......not looked in to that yet though.....................

RX-8 may not be the best choice in that sector, the 350Z would be however. Pisses all over the RX-8 and Boxster (All models including cayman imo) It also looks incredibly fresh. It also has a wealth of tuning options

The RX-8 will require a top up of oil with EVERY tank of fuel. It also (imo) looks a bit weird.

Then I would wonder if they ever drive it! The engine in the RX8 is of total loss design. It will use ALL the oil in the engine up to coat the rotor tips. Any that I have seen have needed more than a litre per 1000 miles.
