Yes thats very good considering that your 2.7 miles away from your local exchange, im around a 600 metres away from my exchange and the best speed i get is only 5MB max and im on Orange.

yeah, pretty good.  Im just under a mile from my exchange, and im getting 13/1.3.  Seems decent enough.  Change your DNS servers, the O2/BeThere ones are sucky to say the least.

Im with Eclipse, about 1mile from the Exchange.
Speed varies from 4.5mb to 6.7mb. Upload is a constant 375kb(ish)

get the ports forwarded, and turn off UPnP if you are on the speedtouch.  I had the same issues, and that appears to be the fix.

I have my O2 Box stuffed in a cupboard.  I lost my temper with it in the end, it didnt offer me the functionality I needed.  Ive got a wireless bridge set up so I can get a signal at the bottom of the garden, and the damned thing wouldnt play ball.  That along with the issue it needs rebooting every few days made me lose it big style one day.  I ended up with a DG834N, which is quite probably the best SOHO router you can get for under £100.

might need to update the firmware depending on the version.  Remember there are no logon details needed as well.

http://www.beforum.co.uk/

That forum should help for the settings or suitable firmware.   The GT should work fine TBH.

Suggestions for better DNS servers as I have joined in the conclusion that the O2 ones are god-awful.

Always have been, they are the BeThere ones, and they have always sucked.  I just use openDNS.  208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

I couldnt find it in my Bebox and I needed it to stick into my Netgear so it would work with our DSL connection. I ended up saving the router settings (you can usually make a backup somewhere when you log on to the router) and then going through the file with notepad until I found the MAC address the router was set up to use. There just didnt seem to be anywhere to retrieve it normally.

Just make sure the Speedtouch is unplugged for half and hour, then plug the netgear in.  Instant IP address.  Ive not cloned the MAC off my speedtouch, and the netgear works perfectly.  Just need to let the DHCP lease run out.

Have a look here (http://www.adsl2forum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=51) for info on using Netgear routers with O2, also here (http://www.adsl2forum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=67) for some tips for your Thomson 585v7.

Yes.

ADSL2+ can achieve far higher rates than ADSL2

PcWorld :: £82.99 all in, comes with Netgears 3 year warranty.  I suppose youre only paying for the extra warranty in some respects, but youre also paying for netgear to replace the router if the N-Spec changes.  The extra £14 is worth it in my opinion.  I looked at them on ebay, but I decided I wanted the warranty.

I thought the DG834N & the "N" range of routers were still in the "draft" stage and not recommended to go for them yet? Also to achieve the 270MB speeds you would really need to have your adapter which your computer is connected to, really close to the router as the highest speeds are not always achievable.

Correct, they are in draft stages, but Netgear have a guarantee on their website that states anything they release that is N-Draft Spec will be N-Spec as its released.  If it isnt theyll swap it out for free.  I think Linksys have the same thing.  The 834N I have stomped all over next doors Airport, I did that on purpose, they kept over-writing my wireless signal!

You can find the O2/Be MAC address usually at the back/bottom of the router.

its the netgear warranty.  Obviously the 1st year you take it back to the shop, after that just stick it in the post with an RMA number.

Just curious. I remember finding somewhere on the forums something that allowed you to see what the max speed you could get in your area was. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

Were currently paying through our teeth for Nildram, so swapping to even the premium O2 service would be saving a heck of a lot, but I have a feeling we are that far away from our exchange we will only be able to get a max of 8mbps anyway :(

SamKnows, then click on "Mapping Engine" halfway down the page.

Though its not 100% accurate.  According to them I cant get over 8.5Mb, but im getting 13.7.
