Acronis True Image?
on: January 15, 2007, 21:03:15 PM
Anyone else tried this?

Ive found an OEM copy in the HDD box i got 6 months back.  Ive used it before, but this is a newer version.  Ive in the past used Ghost to set up a rescue disk, but this is _much_ better to use.  Already done a restore to test the software, and it worked perfectly.  No arguing with Ghost over if the image is corrupt, Ghost often corrupts the drive images ive found.

I have both OEM and retail of version 9 and yes, its bloody good.

I used Ghost 9.0 myself and have never had it let me down, however it does have at least 3 drawbacks.

1. It uses up quite a bit of system resources whilst running the service and systray icon.

2. It might be able to backup a drive but it will not allow you to put more than one partition onto a physical drive when you need to restore. No good if you want to recreate the exact environment as it was before.

3. It wont allow encryption.

Acronis has all the ability of Ghost and is faster/less resource hungry. I bought my copy of 9 from Amazon at 14 quid, ebuyer is currently the best/cheapest place to buy 10.0 for £19.99 inc ... you cannot find it on the website though as the search database appears a bit iffy :D PM me if you want it.

I would highly recommend getting either 9 or 10..... but one word of advice.... register the software first. That way you can access and load the most up to date version. This only applies to retail versions, OEM does not have this luxury, and a shedload of other features have been disabled in the OEM version.

Cheers

All seems to work ok TBH.  Ive backed up both partitions on the RAID (Which has a slightly dodgy disk, hence my usage this time round), and the internal storafge drive.  All mirrored off to the external USB caddy, which is also supported by the boot disk!

ghost is/was a bitch, though for years it was pretty much the only thing around that was usable!
