But if you dont have a HDTV then there isnt any reason at all to buy a HD player.  Old TVs cant display the resolution, so unless you want to pick upa  new TV at the same time its just not worth it.  Also you have to think that to take full advantage of the players youll pretty much have to replace your entire DVD collection.  Now I dont have all that many films, but it would still cost the neck-end of £2k for me to replace them all in BluRay format, and thats only if they are actually available in BluRay.

Why would buy a HD player of any description if you dont have a HD display ? - Pointless.

If you own a HD TV why wouldnt you spend the money to own the kit that gets the most out of your TV ? - Anyone who says that standard DVD on a HD TV is comparable has either never watched a HD movie on a HD screen OR they need to go to Specsavers.

I had my HD screen for a few months before I got a HD-DVD player.
Initially I was using a Scart DVD player and letting the screen upscale standard DVD. It looked alright; better than my cable TV picture. I then bought a HDMI upscaling DVD player and it looked better, it was good.
Then I bought a HD-DVD player (and some HDDVDs), the quality difference was astounding.

Ive since found that I can hook my cable box up to the TV over component which gives a slightly better picture but nothing comes close to watching a HD source on my HD screen.

I think the difference this time around is that DVD looks great unless you sit it right next to Blu-Ray.

Im not saying that Blu-Ray wont eventually become the dominant format, but its going to have a harder time of it than DVD did and its going to take longer. VHS looked and sounded pretty terrible even on standard def TVs with mono sound. DVDs look and sound great and you need flashy kit to take advantage of the benefit going to Blu-Ray.

Agree with this totally. Of course HD looks better but 2 mins into a standard DVD your immersed in the film and it doesnt make any difference.

Ive been watching 1080p HD content on my 24" monitor, and I have to say the difference is day and night to DVD quality! Ive watched a few films now and it takes the immersion factor to a whole new level with the amount of detail you can see. Im even more set on investing in a quality HD panel sometime next year and going all BluRay and such.

Maybe on a 28" screen at two metres away you wouldnt be fussed by the difference, but Im sure anyone with a large panel, say 40" would certainly see it worthwhile.

You cant really compare this argument to hifi though, even low end hifi equipment will sound good to the untrained ear. I would hope most peoples visual acuity is better than their aural acuity...

You would be surprised.  A prick I know has bought a PS3, and tells us all how much better the picture is watching a Blu-Ray than a DVD.
