Another build advice thread ...
on: December 31, 2010, 15:39:35 PM

..is what im working with so far. This is largely a gaming machine with some video work that I would like be a future proof as possible.

i7 950 is meant to be better than the Phenom II from what ive read. Ive gone for 3 channel RAM but other than that, graphics, motherboard, SSD/HD combo, screen im really flying blind.

Any input appreciated.

Videocard is your choice, i would for either a GTX460 or 6850/70 but im a cheapskate :P

Monitor, im only ever going to recommended Dell through PCBuyIT purely for the 0 defective pixel warranty that lasts for 3 years, pisses all over Samsung

Otherwise looks good, if your planning on overclocking i would go for the Noctua or Titan Fenrir, or even the Corsair H50 otherwise its just pointless upgrading from stock if your not going to OC

I built myself a similar system recently, but I went for a coolermaster 700W PSU for about £90, and a radeon 5650, though if youre gaming your GFX is proably a better choice.

If youre planning on properly overclocking your CPU, you cant do better than the Prolimatec Megahalems, keeps my 930 nice and cilly (even with the fan on 7V)

If you decide to spend £90 on a PSU then go for the Corsair.

You could also refer to the Top PSU Tier Listings from XS

If it was thinking about spending that sort of money I would be inclined to wait a month or 2 for Sandy Bridge: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3871/the-sandy-bridge-preview-three-wins-in-a-row

Hadnt read about this, thanks for the pointer. From what I can see SB will be a different socket? LGA 1155 (H2) vs 1366 (B) which would be royally annoying. I almost certainly wont be ordering until the end of January at the earliest so I will keep an eye on this.

The machine is actually for my housemate (and brother in law) pretty sure hell be keeping it stock so might downgrade the cooler. Also dont think id need an upgraded PSU given its not going to be o/c.

Thanks for the pointers.
