Bestest telly?
on: June 04, 2016, 15:36:43 PM
Samsung? Sony?

We're after a 40" telly to watch normal telly and Netflix on. We got a Roku so don't really need a smart telly, and I don't have a PS4 or a Bluray or anything like that. Not fussed about 3D and the curved ones are out because it's being wall mounted.

Not really bothered about cost, just want a good picture and decent remote. Anyone recommend owt?
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Check hotukdeals and just see what's on deal.. My personal preference is Samsung, the new Sonys use android which I believe is supposed to be rubbish, webos on LG I believe is supposed to be quite good, but I've not rated the cheap LGs.. I'm on my 3rd Samsung now..

the sony android is supposedly getting better.. to the point you can run Kodi.

I got a 55" CX802B a few weeks ago for £800 +6yr warranty (comes with 2 remotes + marketplace apps)
This was from Richer Sounds & Graded - it was their Ex-Demo set in store so was professionally calibrated, etc.
The RRP for the TV from a year ago was around £2300 as it was last years Flagship model.
TBH you got 2 choices about price. One that does HDR & future proofs yourself, or one that does not (or might via an update) & look to upgrade when HDR ends up becoming the norm.

If you're after an ultra 4k HDR I'd wait until there is enough content out there to make it worthwhile, at which point OLED screens might be lower in price (which is what you really need for decent HDR).

Egg's Panasonic CX802 recommendation is a winner though, that is last years model being phased out but the image quality is superb, its a case of it not having the latest features is the only problem. I'd keep checking HUKD and see what they are saying/recommending, then check against AVForums for reviews and setup guides.

Solid purchase either way tbh with that model.

look to upgrade when HDR ends up becoming the norm.

They said that with 3D.  Another gimmic.

I bought a £200 Samsung at Tesco its only a 32" but its brilliant, all the menus are super fast and its one of those frameless ones so super slim bezels, really nice and speakers are good too.

HDR doesn't need special panels, it just needs a TV that with high contrast/brightness levels like OLED panels, where you really want to see stuff in shadows/dark areas. If they f**k this up there's no hope.

I bought this last week - http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/hisense/50m3300/hise-50m3300

£440 with 6 year warranty for 50" 4k HDR TV with Freeview HD and Freesat HD(This isn't on the spec on RS website, but believe me it supports it, I'm using it), PVR, 2 x HDMI 2.0, USB3 enabled TV. Supports Netflix 4k and has many other apps.

Using it as my PC monitor in my lounge and to type this. Sensational value for money and the football tonight on ITV HD looked immense.

Only downsides so far are viewing angles are not great, my 27" 4k IPS panel Dell monitor destroys it in this area.

Menu system is a little laggy at times, but then I don't think I've used a smart TV that isn't.
