A new Carmageddon title had been widely predicted after a countdown clock appeared on the official website (http://www.carmageddon.com/) last week - but it was thought that Square Enix, who owned the rights after buying Eidos in 2009, would likely be behind it.
But an announcement today revealed that Stainless, the English indie studio that created the original Carmageddon and Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now games, has bought the rights back and is working on the new title themselves.
Stainless co-founder and CEO Patrick Buckland said in a statement: Carmageddon has returned to its Indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience. Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.'
Buckland's fellow co-founder, Neil Barnden, promised that the reboot would features the same 'extreme destruction' that graced the 1997 PC version.
'Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success,' he said. 'We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.'

The original is a classic and gave me some of the best multiplayer gaming experiences I can remember. When the 60 second timed demo first came out I must have played it to death 100 times over, I hope this can live up to it.

Was that the one where you got more time for running people over? if so I played it a shedload too :heehaw:
-
It was indeed, the old grannys shouted "I was in the war!"
-
I got the original off a blobby disc  I googled blobby disc and got this rather good history of game piracy :nana:

Loved the orginal games and been following the, lack of, news over the past month or so. Glad to see the orginal guys got it back off Square Enix and interesting that they have done the DLC route instead of full game... guess it cuts down on production / distro costs.
-
The original 2 games were great, the followup was quite poor but i'll be looking forward to this, this is one of the best PC Games we played over network at my mates place.
-
never played the original but Carpocalypse Now was an absolute classic! IIRC it was one of the first games I got after upgrading my K6-200's S3 Virge to a Voodoo Banshee. The sheer graphical power!! If this stays true to the original with current technology it should be amazing.
Remember the "censored" version where the people were all referred to as zombies and the colour palette changed so that blood was green?
-
I was working in a computer shop at the time, and enjoying the sheer power of SLi Voodoo 2 :D
-
Yeah, I don't know how they managed to top Carmageddon on the sequal, but they did it successfully. They even managed to come up with a much bigger brother to Don Dumpster!

If I remember correctly I got the patch which was 50Kb if that, from either a PC mag or from the internet, it looked CRAP with green blood!

I bought the censored version, being under age at the time, but because my local Game had run out of stock of the uncensored ones they bundled the patch with it. Result! :)

They best re-use that as the theme tune :D

Damn, you can just feel its going to have that same quality as the other games to it, after the disappointment of DNF I hope this can be one that gets it right.
-
Dnf was always going to be a disappointment. It was released to end the joke.
Look at borderlands 1/2 same dew team as the Duke reboot.
Anyway I for one welcome our apocalyptic overlords!

Think it was 'I was in the war you know!' I used to feel ethically challenged over that game...

Asking for moneys.
-
Pledged, I went for the $25 'vip' package, though the $15 is much better value tbh :ptu:
-
I wouldn't normally pledge for something but this is one case where it actually seems worth it, I'll have a think about slapping down $15.

Under £10 for the game is a great price, it's just obviously somewhat of a wait
+$32,000 since I posted the link so it's generating interest for sure
-
Well over half way now, nobody else taken a punt?
-
I'm in on the $15 deal :D

hmm I'd make a small donation to get the game but tbh.. but that site in general is a bit of a farce - would be nice if a donation = equity in the project. I mean if someone set up a similar site where you could actually invest in projects such as that then it would be a bit more interesting though I guess US securities laws would make it currently impractical and so just donations in return for freebies are all that can be offered.

Game is now funded!

For those that didn't already get Carmageddon for iOS and Android:
Carmageddon is sick sick sick sixteen on the 30th June!
Yes, the 30th June marks 16 years since the most amazing driving game in Earth’s history first splattered blood and cow dung liberally across your monitor. And it’s still as much fun keeping death on the roads today, as it was way back when we first roared down the Hell’s highway.
So, to commemorate this sweet, blood slick anniversary, we’re positively preening with delight to announce another CARMA MOBILE FREELOADING FRENZY!! Yeah that’s right – Carmageddon for iOS and Android will be available for NOTHING worldwide through this whole weekend, June 28-30. Yoinks! So if you haven’t got round to getting it yet, then get it FREE you LUCKY PEOPLE.

I WAS IN THE WAR!

It's puerile, and full of stupid crap, impressed so far ;D
-
Not long now and the mayhem will begin. This and Elite combined will be like being a teenager all over again :w00t:
-
Public beta is out now, after fannying around with Kickstarter, Carmageddon.com, Humble Bundle and Steam I'm finally downloading the sodding thing.
Looking forward to it, but I wouldn't bother with another Kickstarter campaign after the last couple, what a hoop-jumping performance just to get a key into Steam.
-
I'm tempted to buy it this week
-
My graphics card is all kinds of messed up with this, so I've only been able to do a few races. I plan on hammering it when I get my new one, its good fun :ptu:
-
Definitely a laugh, they've not dicked about with the formula much and that IMO is a winner 8)
-
Disappointed by the lack of Fear Factory.
Their latest album would be the perfect sound track.
