Title: Command & Conquer Remastered on Steam
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on March 11, 2020, 08:03:08 AM
Looks flippin' phenomenal to me, I'm tempted to pre-order right away.

https://www.ea.com/games/command-and-conquer/command-and-conquer-remastered/news/official-reveal-trailer

Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, plus all three expansion packs (Covert Operations, Counterstrike, and The Aftermath)

Some of the original Westwood gang, the original music composer, etc all came together to remaster/improve everything so its not just a shiny 4K coat, everything has been reworked from the ground up. I hope they think about doing Dune 2000 next!

I went mad and ordered the box set with Tesla Coils and Mammoth tanks and sh*t.

This looks great, but it's a funny one with https://www.openra.net/ already being pretty mature and supporting Dune/C&C/RA1, they've even been working on the next engine for Tiberian sun etc for a while now.

I do wonder how the 2 will co-exist  :ptu:

I went mad and ordered the box set with Tesla Coils and Mammoth tanks and sh*t.

You ordered this absolute animal from the US? (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0912/7444/products/25.png)

If so  :ptu: :ptu: :ptu: :ptu: :ptu:

Yep. Mostly for the soundtrack discs if I'm honest :ptu:

There's a lot of work gone into this and there's very few PC games from that era to get nostalgic over again. I mean they've even introduced proper skirmishes to network play for this.

I'll probably buy this.

Was also pleased to hear they're remaking Destroy All Humans

All I need now is FFVII on PC and then G-Police and I'm set.  8)

G-Police, what a cracking game! I can't believe I had completely forgotten about Destroy All Humans too, that was great fun.

Those sorts of games, plus Desert/Jungle Strike could actually do with a modern reboot.

One bad point in that the release date is some time in June IIRC.

Should have been a week ago :(

I'm not too worried if production is delayed or delivery postponed, gives them more opportunity to polish it up I guess? As long as I get it eventually.

I've joined grandad.. I usually play RA2 each Christmas while I'm at my parents with nothing to go apart from eat.. I figure the amount of time I end up spending each year trying to get the patches to work to get it running on a modern system, I might as well get the steam version and know it'll run

Alongside the launch of the Remastered Collection, Electronic Arts will be releasing the TiberianDawn.dll and RedAlert.dll and their corresponding source code under the GPL version 3.0 license. This is a key moment for Electronic Arts, the C&C community, and the gaming industry, as we believe this will be one of the first major RTS franchises to open source their source code under the GPL. It’s worth noting this initiative is the direct result of a collaboration between some of the community council members and our teams at EA. After discussing with the council members, we made the decision to go with the GPL license to ensure compatibility with projects like CnCNet and Open RA. Our goal was to deliver the source code in a way that would be truly beneficial for the community, and we hope this will enable amazing community projects for years to come.

So, what does it mean for Mod Support within the Remastered Collection? Along with the inclusion of a new Map Editor, these open-source DLLs should assist users to design maps, create custom units, replace art, alter gameplay logic, and edit data. The community council has already been playing with the source code and are posting some fun experiments in our Discord channel. But to showcase a tangible example of what you can do with the software, Petroglyph has actually created a new modded unit to play with. So we asked a fun question - “What would the Brotherhood of Nod do if they captured the Mammoth Tank?” Well, one guess is they’d replace the turret with a giant artillery cannon and have it fire tactical nukes! Thus the Nuke Tank was born. This is a unit which is fully playable in the game via a mod (seen in the screenshot above), and we hope to have it ready to play and serve as a learning example when the game launches.

For Steam players, we’re utilizing the Steam Workshop for sharing both maps and mods. Players can subscribe to maps and mods directly in the game’s Community Hub within Steam, or utilize in-game menus to browse / download content as well. Once you’re in the game, you may navigate to the Options / Mods tab where you can then activate the mod. We’re aiming to put together further documentation on uploading content and the entire UGC process around the launch window.

Overall, we are incredibly excited to see what the community creates over the coming months. We anticipate some fantastic content for the Remastered Collection itself, some great updates in current community projects as they incorporate the source code, and perhaps we’ll even see some new RTS projects now made possible with the source code under the GPL. One final note we want to emphasize - we’ve done our best to bug fix and prepare these UGC systems for launch, but we have no doubt that once thousands of you begin creating and sharing content, some quirks will be discovered. Please continue to share your experience once the game launches, and let us know how we can continue to improve these tools for your benefit.

The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection will be available June 5 worldwide on PC. Comprised of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and their three expansion packs - Covert Ops, Counterstrike and The Aftermath - the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a passion project between EA, some of the original Westwood Studios team members at Petroglyph, and Lemon Sky Studios.

A detailed FAQ page for C&C mods is here (https://www.ea.com/games/command-and-conquer/command-and-conquer-remastered/modding-faq).

Fantastic! That's going to really extend the lease of life for this beyond nostalgia, kudos to them.

You can preload on Steam now btw for release on June 5th!

The modding community has all but gone there and beyond with the originals and made clones so it is nothing to them to do that. EA has to do a lot of rebuilding with the gaming community in pretty much every department. They became to much of a corporate entity and forgot about how they got there.
I think its been scandal and disaster over there for pretty much everything they have released in the last 4/5 years nearly.

Game play is pretty much the same as the originals except graphics has been improved to up to 4K and sound is much better. You have a choice between C&C and Red Alert at the start then it's mostly as last time.

So if you liked that then you will probably like this version. Seems to be a bunch of bonus material and you can design your own maps/weapons.

Shame the cut scenes haven't been remastered and also it doesn't scale to ultra wide, but otherwise pretty much the same.

I think the main benefit will be the ability to network play without some IPX hack.. but not tried that yet!

I haven't even touched this yet I've been so busy, gutted its not going to support ultrawide but I guess that would make the whole map visible in some cases

Unfortunately not, I'm not even sure it's hitting 4k I'm running 3440x1440 (cropped on the width) but I'm still seeing more pixelation than I'd expect for 4k.. although TBH you don't notice the pixels after 5 minutes..

I'm on the same res and can't tell if it's just because of scaling or what but it almost feels like the view is zoomed in, I'm sure its probably exactly what it used to be like in fairness (maybe Red Alert is different?) but I know what you mean. Still looks awesome, it keeps the feel of the original perfectly.

Love the remastered soundtrack too  Wub Do you know how to bring up the jukebox? I couldn't see a key binding for it, only next/previous tracks. Maybe that's another Red Alert thing.

FFS it is definitely zoomed in after some reading and watching that vid - I bet its the mouse wheel or something - and I still can't find the bloody jukebox

Found an alternative to access all the music for now:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2120980426

Had to go into steam discussions to find out but you just hit escape once you've started a mission/skirmish/whatever to access the Jukebox. Seems so obvious now, much like the scrollwheel.

My monitor and TV each do 3840X2160, it works at that resolution fine.

With super wide it has the problem of either cutting the top/bottom off to give you full width or reducing to the center of the screen.
Title: Re: Command & Conquer Remastered on Steam
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on June 11, 2020, 08:47:25 AM
It puts it in the centre of the screen but honestly it makes very little difference, you don't really notice it after a minute. It's obvious why, as it would give an unfair advantage to those with ultrawide screens.

The fix more often than not is to see if it has a windowed full mode. This often basically goes full screen with no borders but fills the entire screen I find.

It's not a glitch or anything though, it's intentional. Apparently there was a bug where you could move units outside the viewable area, not sure if that's been fixed or not, I never noticed it though.

Nothing else seems to have been fixed, the ore miners still try to get to refineries that they cannot go to and don't check if another is available. On the last map fighting as Nod this can shut down your production. Would have been nice if they had bugfixed better.

Great video here that explains the complexity of pathfinding amongst other things, the team are Westwood were a bloody talented bunch!

The problem with that is it requires changing the AI and that could negatively affect the campaign. Improving the audio visual and adding some usability tweaks is one thing but adjusting pathfinding, etc is very complex and could fundamentally change too much.

Of course, now the source code is out I expect a ton of mods to do exactly that!
Title: Re: Command & Conquer Remastered on Steam
Post by: Serious on June 14, 2020, 14:03:07 PM
Yes, but this only affects the ore miners in specific situations. Make it that they cannot see refineries that are on other sides of unassailable water. I cannot get there, wait 1 minute try again.

They could have cured it, but the number of official maps it affects is small.

Reinforcements have arrived!

The quality of this is excellent throughout, even though I don't care about most of the included tat it really is well manufactured.

The mammoth tank model is heavy pewter and the turret rotates, the obelisk and tesla coil models look good and have a decent sound, the artbook is printed on glossy high quality paper in a heavyweight booklet, tech trees are laminated so you could leave them on your desk for reference, beanie hat, pins and patches are all decent too. The printed materials are copied on an included CD and the soundtrack is on CD or tiberium USB pen in both FLAC & WAV format. Everything has that sheen about it like a 1990s big box game should. Absolutely chuffed.

If ever you wanted to order something from Limited Run and had doubts about the quality, I would say just go for it.

Even with the minor issues it is still the most playable game of it's type I have tried.

I think we have all bought "unnecessary tat" from time to time. I have a collection of decorative plates that shouldn't be eaten from because the pigments contain elements like lead. They just sit on some shelves, still in boxes or wrapped in paper. Every time I look at them I think of the albatross hung around the ancient mariner's neck. There's no point in selling them cause I already have over the government limit and can't even spend what they give me. I was getting the level down but covid-19 compounded that issue.
