Title: Console wars: PS5 vs Xbox Series X
Post by: neXus on June 12, 2020, 06:58:24 AM
Finally,
Console wars are back on. Let's be 15/16 year old fan boys again.

Xbox has to really show some games off and both have to reveal the price but what is your take now Sony has finally revealed a bit more?

For me..

- I think Microsoft will come out cheaper based on the chatter
- Microsoft have really made a big effort to try and jump ahead with everything anyone would want. This gen they have half the sales of Playstation and got beat by the switch too!
- Microsoft's online and backward compatibility options look a lot stronger with older games even getting things like HDR through machine learning
- Sony has clearly put some work in reducing latency throughput with their SSD as well as the SSD but both consoles have and I think prefer Xbox as it seems there were clear engineering decisions and not driven by anything else.

HDR retrospectively added will be trashy I reckon. Its already used poorly in a lot of cases where its not been factored in from the start.

PS5 is still backwards compatible with PS4, I'm not sure what else you could want?

The consistent issue with Xbox is that it's really just another PC and everything will therefore be available to PC, the only reason Microsoft hold ground is because Xbox Live Game Pass & Gold are such stunning offerings, and PS4 hardware has been janky sh*te.

For the casual console player that owns a PC and Xbox One X already, PS5 seems like a no-brainer given the volume of exclusives. If you've watched the full PS5 tech demo for devs you'll see they've got a good chance of smashing it out of the park this time vs MS too. I I'm not sure what the situation is with the drive, is it for 4k films too? I expect I will need to buy the version with 4k BD drive included for backwards compatible games in any case.

Current known PS5 exclusives, there's four there I've highlighted that I'd be interested in right away:

Stray looks interesting too, I wonder if that will make the exclusives list.

I've literally just upgraded to a One X.  None of the PS4 exclusive games were of any interest to me, and I never got on with the pad design.
Had a PS3, and only got it for Gran Turismo, but Prologue was the better game.  When the full game came out it was a step backwards.  Forza wiped the floor with it.
All the mates I play with have Xbox, so it was a no brainer for me.

I'll not be picking up a PS5.  Or a Series X really as I don't want to upgrade my TV to get the best out of it.

Forza bores me, I'm not sure what it is about it but it just doesn't feel right. Horizon 3 was fun but 4 was garbage, Motorsport 7 was meh. :dunno:

I've gone back to playing GT1 and 2 on the Playstation Classic, they seem better than the modern Gran Turismo's for me.
Project Cars and Assetto Corsa are good for proper proper simulations.

I don't mind getting a console, providing I don't have to use one of the stupid controllers. Can barely hold one of the damn things.

So for me, none of the above, unless I can use keyboard and mouse control.

Still looking for a new RPG to play badly.

The thing I've always loved with Gran Tourismo that keeps me coming back to it is the focus it puts on the cars, not just the racing. I used to spend hours just fiddling around in the menus looking at and tweaking the cars.

Whatever your view on the new PS5 design, it's hard not to be impressed with this if it's true... apparently all the texture in the PS5, Dualsense, the camera and the headset is all X O □ ∆ symbols:

They have shown it off - No, its really clever and looks really good! Digital Foundry got given a look and they were impressed.

Yes and no, everything from Sony has been very clear, very strange, they do not really know... All things so far indicate they were already rushing to get this out this year and COVID-19 has made this worrse.

I lost interest in racing games full stop really. They all felt the same, repetitive nature of things and just became boring for me.

I am on the other boat with a lot of people. I am not impressed.

The controller has a number of nice elements including that texture but for me DESIGN was a focus over anything else.

- The digital version was designed first, the disc drive version defiantly looks like a "This is the design, how we put on a drive now?" and the design look suffers from that.
- There is likely to be a black version
- Lots of meme's of course but there is a growing nature of the lady's part's looks and the feminists are kicking up a fuss apparently. It is supposed to represent v for 5.
- I do not hate the look, I just think that as a designer I can see what they went for and wonder at what costs as a result. The XBox design is clean and I do personally like it better but outside of that I can see for form and function etc going in there.

I am not saying Sony has not put thought into their console but everything so far on the console, online, games etc all lead to it looking like they are resting on their success. Relying on their majority stake in player base this generation to cross over. If the price is crazy high that will just re-iterate (Which may have leaked out) that.
I think Microsoft have been building back up with nearly all the original heads on this generation gone, rebuilding, buying game companies, sorting out a lot of things and working towards not just a console but a gaming platform for their user base to get into.

Maybe I'm getting old but that's the same kind of feeling I've been getting. I hope I can get back into GT if I do get a PS5.

I actually think the PS5 looks more like an MS product and the new Xbox mini fridge looks more like a Sony product, they could have easily swapped design teams. PS5 will fit in AV cabinets and the like much better though, they are all designed around rectangular units like BD players and Sky boxes. It doesn't seem like you would be able to fit the new Xbox sideways in many units (can you even turn it on its side or is this basically a PC case?)

I'll also wager that the PS5 is one of those designs that's going to look a lot better in the flesh. I mean let's face it, everyone rags on the designs of every new console when they first appear and over time they gain legend status, this will be no different. You can't please everyone after all.

It maybe that. There is some great skill on driving of course but I think to get real driving out of it you need a steering wheel, peddles and chair setup to do it right with these modern hyper realistic games. Controllers do not cut it.

For me as well I am just into much more tactical based games. There is still the core problem of play time = best gear/stats over real skill in 99% of games but I enjoy things like Division 2, battlefield which have more skill requirements involved.
I not been able to touch my console because of the wife and kids watching TV but I was let down by one of the last Assassins Cree games (the one in Egypt) as people like it but while I liked the combat changes I found the story dull and could not get into it. Dragon ball Fighter Z was AWESOME but no one local to play and after just 2-3 weeks release when I picked it up people online were just insane and almost impossible as a casual gamer to play online.

I have to disagree. The Xbox Series X can sit on the side as well. I think the PS5 dimension specs put out, as many have commented will be more of a pain than the more straight forward Xbox. As I mentioned a lot of the talk on the custom cooling working into a design and the fin design causing obstruction to the venting shown is a concern by many - quite a few articles up on that with people wanting to get their hands on it to have a look. Digital Foundry have already raised concern noting they saw the inside of the new Xbox and the cooling solution was well thought out there.

Can not please everyone but I will defiantly stake that the PS5 design will cause more issues with people and possible issues with manufacture and build quality and cooling with it, especially with the early version from everything I have seen.
It also seems to lack the ports and you CAN Not expand on the storage is something that will also matter I think in the long run.

I think Sony and their 10 versions in 3 years with different storage spec and package options wont work any more.

I would be amazed if they haven't learnt something from the issues with the PS4 hardware and cooling, but it all remains to be seen. I'm unlikely to be first in line for either system as the first batches always have problems - my first Xbox One X was hosed, we all remember ring of death, etc - but in any case we will find out soon enough.

Also you can expand the storage, not sure where you got the idea from that you can't (it would be crazy not to!)

Sony has opted to allow PS5 owners to expand storage using SSD drives that meet its spec for performance. It’s not clear how many drives will even meet this baseline at launch, but it does mean PS5 owners will have greater storage options eventually.

With the X Series you have to have proprietary cards (https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/16/21181854/microsoft-xbox-series-x-expansion-cards-removable-storage-support-features) for expansion, another move that smacks of Sony rather than MS  I'm not surprised by this in all honesty though, those pointless 'game drives' have been around for some time now, but reading into it in both cases this seems to be to offer optimum performance linked directly to the new architecture, so it's not quite the same thing. You can still expand the Xbox with traditional USB storage but it will be slower.

What is great about both is that they are really pushing the boat out to make these devices truly standalone from PC in terms of architecture and where performance matters, its no longer going to be equivalent to say PC master race because they are not like for like. Its going to be as revolutionary as the first PlayStation.

I updated the thread title to make it more searchable!

The retail price for the PlayStation 5 has leaked online. Tech enthusiast Ben Geskin stumbled upon a listing for the new console on Amazon’s French website, revealing a €499 price for the standard model and a €399 for the digital (disc drive-less) edition, calculating to approximately $560 and $450, respectively.

In addition to the price points, the Amazon page also included a November 20, 2020 release date in France. Unfortunately, however, the listing has since been updated to no longer include the leaked information.

Be interesting to see if that sticks.

Not hard to fake, yeah. I didn't read much into it to be fair and assumed it would either end up false or change either way. That does explain why I didn't see more reports of it though. :)

Did that on the previous generations, not this last generation though.  Never bought a PS4, and never felt like I was missing out on anything really.

I have a oneX downstairs, looks brilliant using HDR etc, I've played RDR2 and Forza, that's it, on that basis this next gen is probably the last time I get both, at least this time both manufacturers are "going for it" :ptu:

Since most 1st Party Sony will come to PC and Xbox will defiantly come to PC with Cross buy and in many cases cross play too, plus the cost of both consoles. You may want the living room gaming option but buying two vs getting a modern PC - That may be the better option.

For me still, the Xbox with the cross buy, cross play and online service - This seems to be the best complimentary option to PC.

I will almost certainly be going Ryzen next build, whether that is gen4 or not remains to be seen. But I gather Intel right now simply cannot meet the demands of performance, die size or fixing the security exploits and it's going to continue that way. AMD were always the underdog (with Cyrix being the mongrel, remember them?). It's good to see them bringing the power  :ptu:

People on say the 3600x like myself with RTX and 16GB are still getting insane perfomance. Why I am just going to get a RTX card when I can at some point.
Look at the prices and budget at the time but I do not think you have to go full new if you can get a great mobo deal with gen3 mobo supporting the new PCI express and still be very happy with the perfomance.

The only thing still good in my system is the CPU/mobo/mem combo, but I look at how fast memory + NVMe is now and I'm thinking damn I must be bottlenecking hard on the base architecture. My SSDs are all old and relatively slow now. But again, no point me making that leap unless i'm going Ninja Turbo Hyper Mega build again to last me another 5+ years (which the occasional GPU upgrades).

Looked at how much my GTX 970 and 256GB M500 SSDs are worth now and its bugger all. It's all come on leaps just in the last couple of years, after a lull. The big architectural improvements are finally making it worthwhile to do a big upgrade again.

Same with the consoles (getting back on track!), the Xbox One wasn't a huge leap, neither was PS4, Pro / X is what they should have been originally when launched. Imagine buying a PS3 back in the day, with it being 720p only and underpowered/lacking latest tech and then having to buy a PS3+ to play films too, then deciding you need the PS3 Pro to get full HD. it was bad enough we had the full fat, the slim, etc. Madness. Part of which makes me think I should hold out on the next gen for a while in case the same happens again.

I had a bit of a look at the tech behind the new X-box and PS5. On paper the Xbox has more cores, but the PS5 runs them faster. Generally speaking you shouldn't be able to tell much difference in processing speed from that.

However, PS5 has a very fast SSD, and the tech in the pipe to use it. If everything pans out for them the games will effectively be no loading times for area transitions. Which means that will give them an advantage over the PC in that area too.

Overall though if you think it's worth it get both for exclusive games, otherwise consider the PS5.

Not quite correct.
They are basically the same AMD chipset with modifications. What you may have read with the cores is the clock rates are higher on PS5 but that is turbo. There is a smaller threshold for thermal throttling so that will slow down to less more often than not. So PS5 you may get full grunt for your first 15/30 mins gaming but then it will clock down. One of the reasons why the PS5 is soo big is because of the rumoured heat issues they have been facing internally.
The Xbox will run full tilt for longer. Digital Foundry did a bit on all this.
The SSD stuff more has come out with more of a breakdown on it. They are all but the same SSD. With Sony releasing the viable SSD list and information on what and how external drives would work along with their throughput process Sony has custom chipsets to control the data flow out of the SSD reducing a lot of latency. Very clever and one of the good decisions they made.
Microsoft have said they have some stuff as well there but not provided as much detail.

In terms of the GPU - they are basically the same on both consoles but Microsoft requested some different things and their GFlops are higher but nothing else really is known around that. There is talk that the xbox is also running a kind of discreet graphics chip that they are actually using to run Xbox OS/UI elements rather than the CPU or GPU.

But you are right there. I do not think you will be able to pull much from a game across PC and these consoles. It will all be about price, games and online service offerings.

Seems the first one I looked at confused CPU and GPU a bit, they seem identical CPU but MS gives a bit more GHz boost. MS has 52 compute units to Sony’s 36 but in this part Sony's ones can run faster.

Both consoles use fast, custom NVMe solid state drives with their own custom controller hardware. And both systems are more advanced than what you’ll see in today’s laptops and desktops.

The PS5’s drive is far faster, though. It is capable of 5.5GB/s data transfer, which turns into 8-9GB/s when compression is used. This does not slow the console down either, as there is hardware dedicated to decompression of this data. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X SSD is fast, and can use similar hardware-based compression, but its speeds are 2.4GB/s, or 6GB/s with compression.

As I said, if you hid the console on pure chip performance I doubt if anyone could tell them apart. And yes, I also suspect the PS is bigger due to heat issues.

And to be brutally honest I doubt if there will be that noticeable upgrade from the present consoles except for loading times.

Sony have been promising seamless environment transitions and other things, which for me is a lot more impressive than pure numbers and graphical fidelity.

I don't think we are truly going to know how either behave until they hit the shelves and we see actual game performance on both consoles.

Both will offer this. Both companies have said similar. I am guessing Sony's core in the software for developers will have something, Microsoft have already stated their XDNA supports better transitioning.
I think when you see Halo Infinite - The rumour of no loading open world see everything do anything if true may give everyone a better sense of games to come from both platforms.

As always though it will take at least 2-3 years before you will see games really pushing the consoles.

Yeah both are saying similar things, I was just recalling what I saw from the PS5 releases as I've seen more of those than the Xbox ones.

Though Sony are also highlighting that the development curve has been flattened substantially so maybe it won't be as long this time around until we see the consoles getting pushed hard; I'd imagine MS have made leaps in that area too though I've not seen anything personally.

I have seen both in this regard. THEY ARE greatly different. Both companies have shown current gen games not optimised loading and its a big difference. Optimised games that cross over plus new games will be even better.
The thing that seems to be the chatter is, as I said that 30 minutes gameplay and your PS5 starting to drop FPS etc where the Xbox would keep going.

While they are custom hardware it's a lot similar to PC again this generation. The talk is Sony's middleware they finally learnt a bit of a lesson and its far less cumbersome and complicated this time around.

These are both great, PS5 pad nudges it over the winners line for me right now, but I do expect the XSX console to perform a little better (FPS wise) Down the line, would that be enough to win over the ps5s superb pad? Remains to be seen!

Online is already vastly better as well. I think going forward you will be able to get a lot more out of that there.
