I saw a digital movie for the first time last week. Cineworld at Sheffield have installed digital projectors in screen 20 and by jolly the improvement is simply gobsmacking. I noticed it straight away and I cant tell the difference between red and blue Im that blind.
Its so much sharper, a lot more vibrant, the brightness really hits you. And theres obviously no more of that artifact effect you get at the cinema (the black splodges and splatters and lines and things).

Ive seen both.
Digital is amazing and has its benefits, especially when it comes to degradation, its more consistent to set up.
Film, when projected expertly onto a slightly curved surface, to keep the focus perfect, is still superior when set up properly. It has a creaminess due to the random grain patterns with I find more pleasant. It does, however, not suffer aging very well.
Everything will be digital in 5 years probably, and thats fine, Ill still feel free to whinge on about film being a bit nicer.

i like the odd flicker from old film, give you a feel that this is a bit different
digital projection is a little too perfect, especially when done with a film shot not in a perfect digital standard.
I will admit that it is much clearer which helps alot considering how useless some projection staff are at sorting out focus and alignment.
Not that i go to the cinema that much, the price keeps on rising when the cinemas change hands. Both cinemas changed hands at the same time suddenly in the centre of cardiff and managed to have a sudden boost in the price of both so there wasnt any competition.
God bless Orange Wednesdays for making it a reasonable price

I dont know if its national, but our Vue does all tickets at £2.50 all day Tuesday.
The local (crappy) cinema also does a kids matinee, so Sakura had her first trip to the cinema on Sunday with Mummy and Daddy to see Chicken Little and it cost 4 quid in all :)

Sounds like the difference between traditional PAL and a HD picture. Its there in your face. I Havent yet seen a digital projector. Not to sure when Odeon are supposed to be rolling out across their UK cinemas.
On a related note, I may have to go into the Imax Theatre the next time I am at Millenium Point in Birmingham. Ive been meaning to see what this 3D image and 42 speakers experiance is like.
-
Vue in cardiff were a ripoff last time i ventured near it, dunno about the tuesday deal, but then again it is the night i am busy every week
DAMN YOU GRIMSOC!!

Its thoroughly excellent. Its just a shame that they show so much there that no one would want to see. I saw the Lion King on it, which seems like a waste as its a cartoon, but that was pretty good. I can imagine a spectacle such as The Matrix, Jurassic Park and such like would be jaw dropping.

The cinema is not expensive. I pay £11 month to see as many films as I want.
You all can too. Get an unlimited card from cineworld.
Just dont buy their pic n mix which is now £1.10 per KG.

They do have the largest cinema screen in wales :D
Tuesday is the same £2.50 deal, think it was £1 for a while.
But yeah largest screen in wales = you cant see all of the action at once, you physically have to move your head to view bits of the screen at a time cause its too frickin big!

You need to see an IMAX screen rich, those things are insane

I saw either Reloaded or Revolutions at the IMax in Bristol - not 3D but just mahoosive! It wasnt bad but really if a film is good, you kindof forget the medium youre watching it on and the awe of the size didnt last long. Plus, the bits that looked a bit over-CGed at a normal cinema were far too obviously so at the IMax.
-
The worst part of seeing Reloaded on IMAX was you could see how pock marked Larry Fishburnes face is. It was almost enough to put me off my popcorn!
-
Millennium Point is literally over the road from me, yet theres never anything on there Id consider going and seeing.
Jaimz

That cineworld deal sounds excellent. Nearest one to me i think is Rugby, about a half hour drive. Well thats if I didnt pick anyone else up first.
Odeon recently bumped their standard price up to £6.00 :?

You sure about that??? £1.10 a KILO is damn cheap!!!!!
Think you meant 100 grammes though :(
-
problem i have with that is i either go on my own or get a card with someone to go with.
add to that the fact that i dont fancy watching most of the films that come out
i would just be going to the cinema for the sake of going to the cinema
-
Yeah I meant 100g serious :)
-
I think some of the supermarkets charge even more, IIRC one was charging £1.43 for 100g :o In the market it was about 40-45p last time I looked.
Best to stock up before you get there, I tend to visit a £1 shop and buy a six pack of virgin coke and other stuff before going in to watch a film :)
