I was in Year 7 of Secondary School when this game was first announced. If you had told me then that I would be 26 before I ever get to play it, I would have laughed at you.

think of the graphics in the original Unreal Tournament.... you can still play for hours without missing out on anything because the graphics are a few years old...

game play wins out over graphics every time for me !

This is a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of Duke Nukem, an action hero who must save Earth from invading aliens. Players use pistols, rail guns, shotguns, explosives, and Duke's bare hands to attack and kill the alien enemies. The majority of gameplay involves destroying these enemies in frenetic gun and laser battles in order to move on to the next section. Aliens are often decapitated or dismembered when hit, sending large splashes of blood across the ground, surrounding walls, and players' screen. Some sequences depict more 'over-the-top' instances of violence: aliens getting stabbed in the head or impaled; a human soldier bursting into bloody gibs after being tossed through propeller blades. In one sequence, players have the ability to shoot human characters that are trapped in pod-like alien webbing; bodies explode into pieces upon impact. During the course of the game, players enter a strip-club level and view several topless dancers and receive lap dances. A couple of missions within this level require players to recover sex toys and pictures of topless women. A few sequences strongly imply sexual acts: two women appear to perform fellatio on the central character (e.g., raising their heads from his lap)—though there is no actual depiction of the sex act; Duke moans and leans up against the wall of a bathroom stall (furnished with a hole)—it is implied that a sex act (not depicted) occurs. The game also contains several sexual references and innuendo in the dialogue (e.g., 'I have hungry—you have big egg ro' for me, Duke,' 'If you supply the dancing, I'll supply the pole,' and 'I'll need something naughty to play with.'). Duke's comments range from jokes about colon cleansing to several one-liners about sex and female body parts. Bathroom humor includes the ability to urinate in toilets or urinals and/or pick up feces from toilets and throw it against walls. Players can use both steroid pills and beer as power-ups; when beer is consumed, the screen temporarily blurs. The words 'f**k,' 'sh*t,' 'c*ck,' and 'a*shole' appear in dialogue and on-screen text.

Hard to argue with £22.99.

Not sure I want the balls of steel edition for a bunch of crap to get in the way.

Still, I might wait for the demo to come out and see how it fares.

I'm going to wait for the Demo, the game could turn out being 75% hollow, it could be nothing more than a long demo, the people have waited so long i reckon a bunch will buy it regardless of waiting to see how it plays first.

Title: Re: Duke
Post by: matt5cott on June 03, 2011, 10:22:00 AM
So how do you gain access to the First Access Club demo? You'll need to head on over to the First Access Club and enter your Access Code from either your Borderlands Game of the Year Edition box or Duke Nukem Forever pre-order. PC users will then receive an access code to obtain the demo through Steam.

I have neither :-[

This is no different.

It's not quite as polished as I'd like.

I can get down with it being generic FPS, but it's ropey, maybe I'm being overly critical I dunno :dunno:

I'll give it another shot now, and another tomorrow when entirely sobre, but on what I have played so far this is 7 or maybe 8/10 stuff.
Title: Re: Duke
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on June 03, 2011, 23:32:42 PM
The original was smutty and crude but still a highly polished FPS title, the level design (American McGee to thank for some of that), [re]playability and fun, longevity, easy custom levels and campaigns, it was the full package really.

It seems generic now but at the time it was pretty special, the Build engine allowed much more capability than anyone had seen before in FPS titles.
Title: Re: Duke

Ok played the demo again (very short demo) it does lack polish, it's alright I guess, a lot of arnie lines in there but I'm still yet to be convinced.

I think what doesn't help is this is a very crap demo to be blunt, it's too short and it's basically the same stuff that everyone has seen on a video many times already.

If the game is utter garbage they will want to release content thats been seen/played before in the demo so people don't see how bad other parts of the game are.

I bet they are expecting people to rush out and buy and people will, it just might be worth waiting a week or two after release and see what people genuinely think, if it flops the price will come down substantially anyway, which is a bonus! :P
Title: Re: Duke

Okay, so I've played this through now to what I would be guessing is about the 1/3 or 1/2 way mark and I have to say, it is an overwhelming disappointment. It's not a bad game, but it has plenty of problems and the simple fact is, a smattering of Duke-ness and jokes to keep it interesting does not detract from the fact that it feels more like a buffet of mini games stapled together by loading screens. The levels are far too linear and allow little freedom, you have to follow the tasks laid out. The enemy AI is very erratic, I don't know if this is intentional but it comes across as poor. The ego system doesn't work very well. It doesn't really feel like an FPS game to me, I think the problem is they have tried to pander to the console generation and put in all this interactive sh*t rather than keep it as a lean shooter. This should have been Serious Sam with big f**king guns and attitude. I've seen nothing really funny or crude so far, other than taking a very long slash to start the game, which lets be honest is juvenile and tired. I wanted to be shooting the sh*t up at a lapdance bar, kicking alien faces and paying to see some polygonal titties jiggle, but all the fun interactivity like that has been replaced with crap cutscene nonsense that goes on for ages or rubbish like "repeatedly mash the button until the door opens/your rip the monsters eye out/duke farts". The more I play through the more disappointed I get. It takes a good 30 minutes of crap just to get into the game, I still feel like I'm waiting for it to let me start playing properly and all I wanted was to kick ass and chew bubblegum :(

I feel the same, and i bought ir lastnight, bit gutted now as usual, didn't expect it to be this bad.

I don't see how you could miss it, its in the studio canteen.

Oh and how long are you guys waiting between level loads? I've got 4Gb of RAM and it takes a good two minutes I reckon. An unnaceptably long time in my book. Then if you die, IT RELOADS EVERYTHING :disappointed:

Seems to be about a thirty second load time on average on the PS3. There are far too many loading screens though.

I'll try rebooting before playing next time then and see if that makes any difference from a fresh boot.

 Which reminds me, the graphics actually aren't bad at all, like matt5cott said theres a few horrible textures here and there but overall if you crank up the settings it looks pretty good! The worst thing is reflections, they are hideous.

The Xbox version's pretty poor tbh.  The graphical popups and the fact that some characters DO look live they've been living in Black Mesa for a while.

The Jip about "Power Armour is for Pussies*" is a bit weak, as what exactly is the Ego system?

And since when does Duke Nukem only carry TWO GUNS???

It's not that bad.
I'm enjoying it.  It's a "Leave your brain behind and just shoot everything" kinda game that throws achievements at you like it's training a puppy.

I hate achievements, it is everything that is wrong with gaming today. Even Minecraft has them now ffs.

QFT, spot on with what I was saying.

Quote
The opening of Duke Nukem 3D was iconic. Within seconds of launching the game, you found yourself in exciting combat within an impressively interactive world. You could show a film on the screen inside a movie theater and find hidden rooms and weapons. The game rewarded you for exploring, and the shooting itself was satisfying. The whole experience had little padding to it, and the "mature" elements of the game added flavor to what was already a wonderful game. If impressive level design was the cake, paying strippers was the icing.

But in the Duke Nukem Forever universe, the situation is reversed. The game seems only to exist in order to do things like show a pair of twins performing fellatio on the main character.

And while Duke Nukem 3D threw us into the action within seconds, the new game spends an interminable amount of time asking us to run through the bland environment, learning how to use "Duke Vision" to see in the dark and do everything but fire a gun at a bad guy. What happened to the action-packed game with the ribald humor? This is a title that thinks you're going to be so impressed by seeing the hint of a breast, you'll forget that nothing else is happening.

The first 30 minutes of the game consist of moments where people idolize you—oh, and you can turn the lights on and off. You walk through a museum where relics from the first game are stored, which gives you a hint at how this title was put together. While Gearbox obviously remembered all the neat little details that made Duke such a classic, they didn't remember to put those details in a good game. The game is hollow.

I think they would have done better simply revamping Duke Nukem into real 3D and adding a couple more campaigns onto it, I'd have paid for that.

I think Ars need to stop being whiny little girls.

Of course it's offensive.  Did they not realise what the game was about?
It's not unplayable, It is offensive and makes no apologies for that, and it's not funny if you don't get the quotes and references.

It's not a great game, it's not a terrible game.  It's OK.
Look at what it's doing for Gearbox though.  Everyone's talking about it.  When the next Duke Nukem comes out, is it going to to be more PC?  Blow it out your ass.

It's entertaining.  Ars feel they doing the stereotypical NIMBY thing of "Omg there's tits in it. Someone must be offended somewhere, Seriously...I wasn't expecting tits, OMG I'm so concerned that someone will be offended"

Grow up.

Looking at the language they generally use to review games, wouldn't they be better suited to a game of solitaire??

It's not perfect.  It's the end of the Joke.  The game that finally came.  Who actually though it was going to be a great game.
Sure, it has frame rate issues, the regenerating health and two guns only is not what Duke is about.
So bit's are a bit Halo-ish, and it's not the straight out and out blaster the previous one was, but the aliens have evolved, the game has evolved with it.  Just not as well :D

If you don't know Evil Dead, you have no place reviewing this game.
Duke Nukem is a B-Movie in game form.  No matter how you rose tint the originals, it was the same back then too.

It is everything FPS moved away from.
Yes we have TO MUCH scripted quick time based events now, games that do it to much are bad but they learnt from the old FPS. All the "platformy" stuff is gone because they are tedious. I have not really laughed at anything really. Just Dukes Hi pitch voice.

Graphics are ok but multiplayer looks SHOCKING! but I do have to say I like the attention to interaction. More games full stop could afford more things you would expect to do something with to actually be able too.
