Anyone else thinking of spanking a cheeky £20 down don't hang about too long, it's a limited amount (10k) and when they're gone you have to pay £30 instead! Naturally it's the most popular choice and is being utterly hammered, a couple of K have gone since this AM.

3 days left, £100k to do, looking a bit dicey
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter

Yeah it is a bit, I think they will make it fine though. There's always that last big push, some people hold out to see if it looks likely then buy in at the last minute.

I looked at the upgrades to see if any would be worthwhile, but that would need to move to the £30 tier PLUS the upgrades are all expensive on top (e.g. concept ship and star charts which I thought would be nice to have are £20 each!). So yeah... I won't be bothering to raise my pledge at all, not at those prices. The cost for better starting options is ludicrous too.

The cost for better starting options is ludicrous too.

It's a pretty desperate way to raise money, and I'm pretty peeved that it won't be a level playing field, certainly will not be adding more than my bog standard £20 because of this.
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on January 01, 2013, 20:18:44 PM
Agreed, it makes it sound like you'll start in a sh*t way if you don't cash in. In some ways I can understand randomising the starting more since its now multiplayer friendly, but while pricing people out of being able to start off in the familiar Lave system is a bit sh*tty I hope it doesn't mean that people will troll with better starting ships/more credits to play with too.
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Eggtastico on January 02, 2013, 15:27:00 PM
does it matter? clever way to raise money, they cant have everyone starting off in the same system. The starting credits prob wont make much difference either. Its a little headstart with a better ship & a few more credits, but I bet nothing more than a casual player would earn in a week or two.

I'll wonder when they will open up the name pre-registration and how it will work.

It'll cruise past the required amount for the MAC version, only needs £20k more with 24 hours to go and it's had a big media dump today.

Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on February 04, 2013, 22:12:26 PM
Did you never play Elite or Frontier? Not only is the scale of the game beyond comparison but also how totally open-ended and sandbox it will be, single or multiplayer. You might as well read the kickstarter page, but just for a moment imagine the entire galaxy procedurally generated, both scripted and procedurally generated missions/opportunities so freedom to go anywhere and do anything you like. You could be a cargo trader, a pirate, bounty hunter, space miner (I think). They've said eventually you'll be able to explore your own ship, space stations and land on and explore planets.

Fair one.  I didn't play Elite but well aware of it. I suppose EVE comes close in terms of open-ended play but it's still restricted in the fact the universe is finite.

Eve is likely to be better than it, it certainly has more open ended gameplay but then it has been developed over the past 10ish years. what the latest elite is, is a version for folks who aren't looking for a monthly subscription game where the primary gameplay elements are real world players.

It's the single player version of eve with the extra multiplayer fun thrown in on the side.

That'll work for me; I generally hate multiplayer and in EVE it was terrible.  As long as this doesn't require voice to do anything it'll be fine and dandy!

i believe all the old elites & now freely available to download on the web.
I used to love elite 2 - didnt play ecounters one because of the known bugs. I had the original elite on an acorn electron when I was 7. no idea what to do at that age, so was left in its box in favour of chuckie egg & dare devil denis

Frontier was one of my very favourite games as a kid.

Naturally, my in-game name will be Walrusbonzo.  Milkman though, that's great!!!  :muttley:

Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: bytejunkie on July 11, 2014, 08:53:21 AM
depends on your stance.

if you took into account the 400 quid price tag of a c64, the 8 quid for the game, the hundreds and hundreds of hours my dad put into it, were probably still cheaper than going to the pictures.

every time games go up in price, i remind myself that 80 spent on watchdogs and all the extras is the equivalent of 10 cinema trips. and i get far more than 10 nights play out of good games.

Of course there's relativity to it, but taken on it's own its a lot of money - but yes for the level of investment you're likely to put in it holds value.

I spent a lot of money on hifi equipment because there's value to me in it that others might not see.

I quite like it.
ive not played online yet - but im enjoying solo.

IF you liked frontier, then you should like this.
Jumping between star systems is a bit odd & takes getting used to, as you jump to the galaxy & then home in on the base from there. Travel to fast & you overshoot it. Travel to close to planet & you drop out of lightspeed & have to do it again.

Check BBs for missions (obviously, but...) if you get one to deliver to X port if you go and make a cup of tea and then check the BB again it often refreshes so you might get another to X port so you can stack them up.

Don't rely on the trade maps, it's best off if you literally note the prices down at a station! (F10 is screenshot)

Play the tutorial to get the flight/docking basics, if you don't you'll get reamed.

In the sidewinder don't bother trying to fight anything really, chuck all your pips to ENG and just leg it (make sure to use boost)

I found some 'Ancient Artifacts' drifting in space, nabbed them and sold them off to the tune of 12,000cr or something.   Then I look and see I've been fined 20,000cr for illegal goods.

WTF? What's the point of cargo drifting in space if you can't sell it?
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on December 23, 2014, 00:54:47 AM
You have to sell it at the appropriate places. From what I gather, it's not as easy as it used to be to earn cash from illegal goods.
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Eggtastico on December 23, 2014, 08:35:30 AM
while you can sell illegal goods at places that have blackmarkets, you may still get cargo scanned & fined/bountied.
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: matt5cott on December 23, 2014, 09:11:22 AM
Check if you're anywhere near Pinouphis, in which is watts dock one of my favourite ports, anarchy, blackmarket, full supply of dodgy stuff such as narcotics/slaves and battle weapons, and excellent ship weapons outfitting. Even if you get scanned the only thing illegal is toxic waste.

I always go there if I have a hold full of dodgy stuff :D
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on December 23, 2014, 16:59:51 PM
Wow do I feel like a n00b. I did all the training and so far so good (takes a while to get used to flying using the mouse but I feel competent enough).

A few things I've noticed, when going into superspeed to travel to places, pressing J, it seems to be awkward to time when to slow down and drop back out. I ended up very far away from the station and it seems like the only way to get there is to spend five mins at full throttle. Is there a quicker way to get there or am I just dropping out too early?

Second is actually filling up my cargo hold - I can't figure out how to. When I go into starport services I get a bulletin board, but no market/trade board to load up on goods. How do I buy stuff to trade in other systems?

Edit: Okay, so it looks like not every starport offers a commodities market, hence my confusion. Back in I go...

From a Sys Admin I know at Frontier
Elite Dangerous has now been out for about a month and a half. In that time our player base has managed to discover 615,475 so far uncharted star systems in the Galaxy. Only around another 399,999,384,524 to go, then....
Title: Re: Elite - kickstarter
Post by: Eagle on January 24, 2015, 09:41:41 AM
I've been discovering/analysing systems - not realising that I'm actually the first in the game to do so. Thought it was an 'immersion' thing but, no; it's genuine.

Have a fully-fitted Viper but still struggling with Anacondas.  All good fun though.

Really surprised there's hardly any griefing going on - which I fully expected from my EVE experiences.

It's all a bit repetitive and the dogfighting grind is really the only way to make fast cash at the moment but 8/10 from me so far.
