USB/FW/eSata Transfer speeds

Someone care to explain the various connection speeds for USB 2-3 , FW, eSata etc

USB2 is stating 3GBs, USB3 is stating 5GBs etc

Most i can get from a PC with a USB 2 slot to a USB 2 Device is 50MBs, bit of a let down really.

What is bottlenecking it?

USB 2 is 480MBits?

Also notice Bits not Bytes ~ 60 MBytes/Sec

Nothing, 50MB sec is about it for a USB2 interface. USB3 will provide 4Gbit/s raw giving 3.2 Gbit/s throughput once you deal with overheads.  The SuperSpeed bus will up that to 4.8Gbit/s, this is still part of the USB3 specification. This requires 2 power lines, 2 normal data lines and 4 SuperSpeed lines.

But as Xe pointed out its bits not bytes to, so it does work out.

Isnt some of it to do with the actual USB device though?

Like when looking at Large capacity USB sticks, the difference in time taken to read/write between makes and models was quite significant. This is probably obvious to you lot, but people like myself may overlook it and think it was the computers fault?

A USB2 interface limits the throughput speed to 480Mbits/s or 60Mbytes/s. On top of that you have overheads that reduce the speed further. The device, such as a memory stick, which is on the end might not be capable of supplying or taking the data at the full USB2 rate but that is another issue.

I dont find eSata particularly faster really, certainly not what I was expecting. Im sticking with internal for any drive expansion unless I really want a drive I can unplug for backup.

the red button will do a disc clone (handy)
not used it yet - but I think it will only do it when you launch a piece of S/ware on your
puter - so you dont do it by accident!

I didnt think external would be any slower than internal ?

same drives... same connection...

unless the cable is really really long and messes it up ?   dunno what sort of length is too long for sata ?

I dunno, it seems to suffer from external drive syndrome which I cant explain any better than the annoying thing when you wait for the OS to pick up after connecting a USB drive. and it just doesnt seem quite as fast.

Im using a Seagate Freeagent Pro 750Gb via eSata for reference.

Could be poor motherboard performance/drivers I guess, I got this board when eSata was a brand new thing.
