TFT Advice.

My lovely 21 inch Trinitron monitor is on its last legs.   So Ive decided to give TFTs a try, but Ive got a few questions.

1. Having not done much research into them Im wondering what theyre like for gaming?

2. Do they have the same lifespan as a normal monitor?

3. I remember reading something about refresh rates and TFTs, whats that all about?

4. Is there still a big issue with dead pixels, if so do the online shops replace them?

Also if anyone has a suggestion for one (budget around £200), Id greatly appreciate it.

1) A response time of anything of 16ms or under is fine for gaming.

2) seem to have a good lifespan, you might loose a pixel but on average it should go on for a very long time.

3) TFTs dont have refresh rates, on a normal CRT the electron beam will power up a section of phosphor and then move on, eventually it will come back and refresh the charge but in the meantime the pixel will have lost energy and light output will be reduced. This gives rise to flickering. A TFT pixel is always on or off so instead the rate of change is used, normally this runs in a cycle from black up to white and then back again, or from a mid grey.

4 Depends on the quality rating of the screen, I have never had a dead pixel, but others have had a few. If you buy from a shop ask to check, if you buy from mail order you have the seven days to send it back.

If you dont mind a tube display, seriously good used stuff is flooding the market as people are switching to TFT. $50 is the going rate around here for a used 21" jobber. Spend the remainder of the budget on quality sausages. :D
