GFX Upgrade, some input please
on: June 10, 2008, 09:18:27 AM
Morning,

With the release of the new range of graphics cards i was hoping to pick up either a reduced price new card or a second hand card for my dad to sli, however i have to do all his support / upgrades / maintainance and i now live a good hour away from where he lives.

I have been looking into sli and if you dont know what your doing it seems it can be a nightmare  so i wonder if it might be a good idea to just go for a single card upgrade and sell his existing card.

His spec is a cyber power system

C2D E6500
2gb pc2 667
420w psu (unknown)
MSI P6N SLI-F V2 S775 nFORCE 650i (Both PCI-E run at x8 in sli)
EVGA Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
22" Samsung TFT

The options:

a) Sell 8800GT and buy 8800GTX
b) Buy another 8800GT and sli
c) Forget sli and buy one of the new ATI offerings

A second hand GTX would be a good bet for him but other than fleabay where could i pick up a second hand card?

Cheers.

Stick with the 8800GT, a single GTX wont make a vast improvement, sure you can setup SLI, but whats the point really?

Sell the PSU, buy a new PSU :P

Im trying to track down through Cyber Power what psus they use for the 420w and then i will find out if it does need replacing, if its a Hyper ill be racing over there to rip it out before it goes boom.

Seriously is it not going to be worth upgrading his gfx? i had hoped someone on here might be selling a gt or gtx or a 3870x2 to buy one of the new cards at the end of the month and i could pick up one of those.

Is it still under warranty?
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Yeah hes had it about 6 months and it comes with a three year warranty but he isnt the best in the world at doing backups so i wouldnt want him to fry a hdd or something.

Value for money vs performance.. If i had to drive an hour to fix someones pc i would make sure it was as stable as possible, as im not the sort of person who sees the point in running a SLI system with 1000w PSU and 2 GTXs in order to get a % faster fps or such.
