My dislike of PS3 rears its ugly head
on: November 29, 2009, 13:18:54 PM
Ive not played any games on my PS3 for quite a while, as nothing has really grabbed my attention.

Last night I thought Id play some pain.  300mb update.  Took about an hour and a half.  On a 6mb connection.
Today, I thought Ill play some Resistance 2.  Again, another 304mb update.  Has been downloading for 20 minutes and is 14% though the total procedure.

XBL is way faster than this.  Its a good job the PSN is free, I wouldnt pay for a service this slow.

I do not mind the PS3 and games are starting to ship on it that are worth a dam but yeah.
Online stuff - still way off, everyone complains about how slow those things are.
The install to hardrive stuff as well all the time, for what the machine is why on earth does it take so long, the grab of the disc is terrible!

Again another personal grip is when ever I pick up the controller, even with the rumble, it always feels cheap, small and light for me. I think what refinements MS did for the 360 controller were close to spot on for me.

The pads need a lot of work.  It does feel cheap and flimsy and the sloping triggers are a pain but if you add trigger extenders it makes the pad a.lot better.

Next on my list is to change the thumbsticks to xbox ones and possibly add a little lead flashing to give it more weight.

Got to say Ive no real problems with it, it just does what it does and it does it really well. Play some games, watch Iplayer, watch some Blu-rays, it just works. Id never seen or used a 360 until my brother spent some time staying with us and its broken down twice in as many months. Its also rather confusing with regards to the menus and costs a small fortune by the time you buy all of the bits that come as standard on the PS3 like the wi-fi dongle, rechargeable batteries for the controllers, live subscription etc. It also pretty much seems to just play games and not do much else.

The PS3 was a freebie that I picked up with a mobile phone contract but its quickly become the most used thing in the house. Previously I was planning on buying a 360 but if I knew then what I knew now I would have bought a PS3 a long time ago. My brother agrees, if his 360 breaks again its getting chucked, the games traded in and a shiny new PS3 slim is getting purchased.

Please dont bother with the fanboy whining and flaming. Im not even that much of a console gamer, Im just saying it as I see it.

I think as a media centre it is great, connects well with my pc and mac for files and plays many formats really well. Streams over wifi a bit naff with the lack of wireless n but you can copy to hardrive ready and watch or external usb drives.
Interface is clunky and buried under long lists but good with the blu ray etc.

Controls I often find comments related the to the persons hands. People with small to average find it fine but as with me, people with bigger hands hate it.
You got to give MS kudos for their triggers though, Very good feel to them, Firm and responsive.
If they tweeked the thumbstick locations a little, sorted the D-pad out and offered and lcd or speaker (I think the way that works on a wii is brilliant, small touches like bullets whizzing past you or going past you as they hit the wall in your 5.1 system would just give that little bit extra.

I agree about the triggers. Them caps are well worth the few quid, so your fingers dont slip off.
Ive never found any thumb pad nice to use, though the ps3 does just edge it over the x360.

I dont get download speed issues.. even a 2gb demo downloads in about 45mins.

I think the 360 pads are almost perfect (Bar the D-Pad).  The size, weight and responsiveness is spot on.
The cost of a couple of rechargeable AAs isnt the end of the world and why youd use Wifi for gaming is beyond me.

Other than that, Im happy Ive got all 3 consoles.  The 360 gets the most use for gaming, PS3 for movies, and the wii for dicking about.

Wifi works just fine for gaming on the PS3. At least it always has for me? Who wants cables trailing all over the shop?

only thing wrong with your post.

it has lots of options to do other stuff, i just never tried any of them. however with the ps3, ive got the media server stuff working and iplayer working and it works really well, really simply.
