Help! Major problems with my computer..
on: February 14, 2009, 23:10:17 PM
Hi all, well I was running 32 bit XP on my system, but was having some problems (like a No Disk error that wouldnt go away)

Windows 7 looked tempting, so thought Id try out the Beta of it. Was recommended to try out the 32bit version though. Installed it all, but I was having two big problems with it. NO usb ports would work at all. They were all showing as working, all enabled in BIOS, correct mobo/chipset drivers installed from the ASUS website, etc. but nothing! My wireless mouse wouldnt even work so Im using a PS2 mouse in the mean time.

I was also having audio issues with my soundcard, but thats not so important.

So Ive gotten sick of Windows 7, it is a Beta after all. So Ive installed XP Pro x64 onto the system.

Now not only does the USB not work, but the LAN connection wont now either!

In Network Connections it shows up two 1394 Connections. Both are connected but  have no packets at all being sent or received. Everything is working according to Device Manager. Ive checked my TCP/IP settings (tried static and dynamic) and still not working. This is my main concern as this means no internet on my PC. Also, why is it a 1394 connection and not Ethernet?

USB still not working! Checked the BIOS again and everything is Enabled. Ive deleted the USB bits in the Device Manager then restarted so theyd re-install, but still nothing!

I feel like I want to smash this computer through the wall :(

Thanks!

EDIT: mobo is an ASUS "P5N-E SLI"
Onboard network/USB, etc.
4GB RAM
ASUS 8600GT graphics
1x 750gb Samsung Spinpoint
1x 500gb Western Digital

Im switching back to XP 32 bit to see how that works.

Just on doing the Install at the moment and the mouse isnt working which isnt a good sign so far! Will have to see how it goes once its finished installing and Ive got Drivers in but usually it works plug and play! Could it be possible that something is wrong with my mobo?

yeah.... SP1 should fix most of your problems ;)

(p.s. the 1394 Connections are your firewire ports, not the lan ones)

Its quite possible that your network connection is foobared, using a PCI or USB interface might be an option. Check if you have a network connector listed in either network connections or device manager. Chances are it will come up as a Realtek NIC of some type.

Well Im on XP 32 and the network is working correctly after installing the chipset drivers. Still no USB though! So thats my only problem to fix now :p

Any ideas on troubleshooting? Things to try, etc. ? Ive tried a few different devices and nothing works.

Thanks for the help :)

Ive got:

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

EDIT: I dont know if it makes a difference or not, but Ive just been looking for IRQ conflicts and the first two in the above list have their own IRQs.. But the two USB Root Hubs arent listed under any IRQs?

Ive just flashed the BIOS to the newest version too. Still nothing..

Did you try out using a Nix Live CD firstly as I said on MSN the other night. If not do it.

If they dont work under nix as well Im getting this horrible feeling that some part of the mobo is fried, tho for it to actually pickup the USB Root Hub on the OS install would again believe me to think that its a driver/conflict issue.

hmmm... hope the mobo isnt knackered!

Have u tried using fail-safe settings in BIOS ?

I also would try an Ubuntu live CD to find out if it is ahardware or software issue.

Just tried it in fail-safe and still no luck.

Ive tried it with a live cd of Slax which didnt work, burning off a live cd of Ubuntu now to try out.

Just been reading up on RMAs with ASUS/Ebuyer and it doesnt look good! £16 for an RMA.. Why should you have to pay so much for a warranty claim?! I dont fancy the 6 weeks waiting either..  :whoops:

Well Ive just tried Ubuntu too and nothing still!

Looks like a hardware issue.. Is it worth removing some stuff (audio card, a stick of RAM, etc. then trying? Or will it not make a difference?
