Help new PC build... am out of the loop at the moment
on: February 20, 2017, 00:57:51 AM
I've got a second hand gtx 980ti on the way - these seem to have decent memory bandwidth and also I can potentially sell on for minimal loss in a few months if I decide to grab a 1080ti when released.

I was thinking about the following components - PC is mainly for deep learning coursework for uni initially but would be nice to play a few games in the summer after exams - any thoughts, this was partly based on a hackintosh guide as it might be cool to build one later on though initially will just be running ubuntu

i5 6600K Processor:

Corsair C W-9060007WW Hydro Series H60 High Liquid CPU Cooler

NZXT CA-S340W-B1 Source 340 Midi-Tower Case - Black

for RAM bit unsure about whether to get

a 1*16GB kit

or 2* 8GB

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMK16GX4M2B3000C15-Vengeance-Performance-Desktop/dp/B0134EW7G8

might need to shop around a bit on some of the parts as I'm not sure amazon will be cheapest, have already found decent deal for the CPU with the eBay link above.

Also the NZXT cases (subjectively/IMHO) look pretty good - are these generally well made and easy to work with or should I consider others. They seem to look quite nice unlike some of the cases out there that seem like they'd be more suited to a teenage boy's bedroom.

For the last few years there hasn't been much change in CPUs, or computer performance. AMD has been a good distance behind Intel and people have been moving away from buying desktops, towers and laptops.
If you can find a cpu and mobo from older stock at a good price then it's probably worth considering. Then Intel have been fairly good at supply and demand.

One little item that might change that, AMD Ryzen CPUs and mobos are due out this year, and if it does manage adequate performance increase it may be worth buying one. It may also mean cheaper Intel chips and increase their performance too. At the moment I'm wondering what Intel are holding back. Even if there is little speed improvement over the present Intel chips for Ryzen they still might be worth thinking about, AMD motherboard designs are usually much less likely to change year on year than intel ones. Intel recently have been 'improving' theirs every year, with their 'tick-tock' design strategy, meaning if you want the latest Intel CPU you need a new motherboard too - even if you just bought the mobo last year.

The down side is that AMD have been promising better than Intel for quite a while, it hasn't happened since the Intel core processors came out.

yeah, if you're not in a hurry wait for the new AMD chips to come out

they're much cheaper than intel and supposed to be similar performance... (prices are out but no benchmarks etc.)

even if they're not great, it should push the intel prices down a lot :-)

thanks for the help guys, I did need one quite quickly - in then end picked up a 6600k i5 and a 980ti second hand, along with mono and ram... got PSU, case, cooler, SSD etc.. new. Whole thing came to £800 which I was quite happy with!
