Cooling advice needed!
on: January 24, 2013, 08:50:03 AM
So I've finally rebuilt a tower PC after running on a shuttle for a few years and the noise is getting to me. I need some advice as to what route to take - back to water or stick with copper.

Currently making a noise:

Stock Intel 775 cooler on top of a Q6600
Stock cooler on a Radeon HD 5670
Stupid NB hsf setup on the NF79

I've put together watercooling setups before so this doesn't faze me but it's not really necessary as I'm not bothered about overclocking. I also don't want to spend too much on a CPU / GPU water cooling setup and still have buzzing from the NB cooler. I don't really have a budget in mind, probably ~ £100 overall.

Recommendations please!

what's the noisiest fan right now ? and what are case temps like ?

tbh, water cooling isn't really needed for a quiet system any more (and I've got it)

if you want a new CPU cooler, this is the one to get ebuyer link

for the gfx card... you might as well get a new passively cooled card - you could get a new, better, passively cooled card for about the price of a quiet/passive cooler for the card you have... what you get just depends on how much you want to spend.. and tbh I'm not that up on gfx cards to recommend the best one... if you don;t game much.. just go to ebuyer and just pick a passively cooled amd card for about £50 and you'll be sorted

for the m/b cooler, it just depends on what m/b you have and what's available... post up the model of your m/b and I'll find you a decent one ;-)

What case are you using? It's almost as important for quietness as the fans really as a good one will have acoustic dampening and better ventilation so you don't have to worry about 'performance' cooling vs quiet. Losing the stock CPU cooler will make the biggest difference, they are shocking. Noctua are the daddies for coolers and fans, the one Alan linked to can probably be run at half-speed setting and will be virtually silent, I can't hear my PC below my desk, only my microserver sat on top. If you think the space in your case will be a bit restrictive, I'm using this Noctua which has a variety of configuration options for reduced case space (and its damn good).

I have a pretty massive case, some lian li thing I think. Ventilation is great, a 120mm either end and 2 120mm holes with just grills at the top (hence considering w/c) along with various small holes all over the case. I don't monitor temps and I'd rather not pay for a new gfx card! I think the CPU hsf is the noisiest atm, especially when the rpms go up. I'll look into these noctuas and report back, thanks for the help :)

I was saying think about a new passively cooled gfx card, because a quiet heat sink for your card would be £50 or more.... when for £50 you could get a card better than yours that comes with passive cooling as standard

but yeah... swap the cpu fan and see what happens :-)

I was looking at some older zalman things which retail for 25-30... No good?
