Title: Indie games
Post by: matt5cott on August 13, 2014, 09:19:24 AM
Spelunky, Fez, Hotline Miami

This trio pretty much shame all the big studios modern gaming efforts IMO, especially with the latter two being free on PS+

It's a shame that sales seem to be driven now by cookie cutter FPS and or same franchise every year efforts (FIFA)

The game I'm stoked about atm is the playstation release of Nidhogg, yes a game that looks like it was drawn by a child

Any other indie gems worth a shout?

Hotline Miami is the best game I've played in a long time (a long long time)

not keep on Fez, but might give Spelunky a try if I have time

Tokyo massacre looks good, a lot like hotline miami, with more gore, but it's not finished yet :-(

I hate all the games jumping on the indi bandwaggon, thinking then can put out the same old game, but with old school/pixilated graphics and think it'll be a big hit

I like the style of game where you keep dieing then learning from it trying something new each time... a bit like cannon fodder, or comandos (I think thats what it was called, was a long time ago) I'm suprised ther hasn;t been a game like that released lately...

I keep going back to FTL. I think its a proper gem especially when you factor in all the mods, etc people have come up with (e.g. Captain's Edition) which give it massive longevity. I really liked Game Dev Tycoon too.

Then there's also the freeware TTD railroad tycoon clone, which is a great way to kill an afternoon.

Spelunky is right up your dirty alleyway then sailor. I've completed it nearly 30 times.

Not tried FTL, I shall have to rectify this ;D OpenTTD is hilariously addictive

Rogue Legacy is very highly regarded, almost as much as some of the others you guys mentioned. I haven't played Spelunky or Hotline Miami  but own them both >_<

I spent a good while on Rogue Legacy and its superb.

Factorio has just come out of Early Access, you may lose sleep again, knighty.

One I've mentioned before (probably to knighty) that is in a similar vein but first-person perspective: https://www.satisfactorygame.com/

Also looks interesting!

It's just after 5 and I have recently woken up, Want to go straight back to bed but it can wait.

Having finally dropped to logging in to Guild Wars 2 only for daily login rewards I have rediscovered Elder Scrolls Skyrim. Seems it's become a Covid-19 safe porn capital of the World.

I downloaded a couple of graphics mods to improve the appearance of the game and suddenly my character had huge baps on the scale of just fasten a couple of buckets together and you have a bikini top.

I removed that one, then every Adult female I kill ends up naked when I loot the corpse.

Seems the modding scene on that game is just as frenetic as ever.

I'm 670 game play hours in to Satisfactory, it's not just a factory game... I would thoroughly recommend it!

And the update 3 trailer (context: pipes were an ongoing meme but not available in the game):

This is the sort of game I would love to get into properly and get a Tek co-op going, but I know I just don't have the time for it!

Yeah, multiplayer is a little buggy too (This is also in early access), although they are currently working on that and dedicated servers

Can't believe I forgot about it, but if you like Hotline Miami but would like to play that style of top-down game in a tactical space sci-fi setting, check out Heat Signature (https://store.steampowered.com/app/268130/Heat_Signature/), I bought it as soon as it came out. I really like the variety of weapons and cool features like being thrown out of an airlock and having a limited time to rescue yourself. One of the developer's other games Gunpoint looks good too.

Boy that looks good  :ptu:

All my free time atm is either fixing up my arcade cabs (5 now) or Spelunky 2 :drama:

Spelunky 2 is apt for this thread though, it's superb :w00t:

I would actually really love to get a proper cab setup for retro gaming, maybe with a Pi or something under the hood. Never have the time at the moment though - maybe one day I'll start a thread and pick your brains about it :yarr:

In a few years a raspPi will be bossing it, they're already pretty good (PC solutions currently quite a lot better) But the Pi will get there, RPi4 compatibility is proving very slow due to new graphics hardware.

Alas also in a few years unless something changes "proper" Cabs, ie with CRTs will be more expensive.

You know a lot of people are building using a MiSTER (https://www.retrorgb.com/mister.html) with different cores ?

Not the cheapest option though FPGA does give great results. I'm going to buy the Analogue Mega SG next year to get my MD/Genesis fix.

My mate has one and he loves it, they released cave cores and DoDonPachi for it a few weeks back which really got my attention :D He has a net city cab with VGA so that works, annoyingly the target cabs I have in mind are all JAMMA only and a suitable solution isn't available yet but they're working on it, only a mater of time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVk_Z1g1qb8

I'm keen to get one when it's out as RPI4 still is pretty shonky emulation wise, but it's passable.

Should really update this, I bought an Analog Mega SG in the end and two 8bitdo controllers. That was before Christmas and I still haven't even opened the box
