landline / ip phone integration ?
on: August 13, 2017, 17:15:50 PM
anyone had anything to do with landline / ip phone integration ?

moving things around a bit at work, could do with extra phones in (handsets anyway)

don't really need anything fancy - for now really just want to join land line to network so I can have more phones / stick them where I need them and it's a lot easier if I can just plug them into a switch than wire each phone in

later on it would be awesome if it could be integrated so as someone phones in PC in office can recognise phone number so I can display their info (address, past orders, their bill etc)

figure I should start off right and it'll make things much easier later on.... but everywhere I'm looking they're more interested in voip calls -
I want to stick with the land line unless there's a way I can integrate the two with the same phone number

(don;t know if it makes any difference, but have a decent server running 24/7 for cctv)

I have no actual experience of implementing a VOIP PBX which is basically what you are looking to do..

However if you want to roll your own.. then get Asterisk http://www.asterisk.org they also have a demo server you can play with..

And purchase a PSTN card, you can get a 4 port card for about £40 and Asterisk is free.. you can later integrate to external VOIP providers..

Alternatively BT are pushing their VOIP solutions, for which you could use your existing numbers..

Obviously if you didn't want IP phones, you could just get a regular PBX, plenty on ebay as everyone upgrades to IP and use the Cat 5 adaptors to connect handsets, over cat5 not via the switch.

asterisk is quite easy to pick up.
VOIP phones these days can be installed between your switch & computer as long as the switch supports voice.
You can have them on separate VLANs as well. Call management / queues / those pesky press 1 for x press 2 for y (IVR?) are easy to set up as well.
As well as voicemail, etc. - you can also push calls to/from your mobile and spoof the caller ID as your office number.
You can have a virtual office anywhere tbh!

ordered an old dell server, FXO card for it (to plug into phone line) and a couple of cisco POE IP phones

POE is a bonus I didn't think of, I can plug them into the POE switch I have for the cctv (all has ups backup too)

but...

as long as the switch supports voice

just re-read that... do I need a special switch for an IP phone ?   - phones will be plugged direct into POE switch
