New ISP time
on: March 18, 2009, 21:15:43 PM
Im currently with Eclipse, and was quite happy with them until today, when I rang them and was told "oooh we dont do your business package any more, and you usage is like 100Gb a month so we want you to pay £50+ per month"

ROFFLE

So yeah, Im looking at Be Pro 24Mb with a static IP for when I move (its capable in my area). The closer I am to my exchange the better, how can I find my distance from my exchange?

This seems to be unlimited too and they dont use traffic shaping, so are they good/worth going with?

Is the changeover pretty fast?

Cheers guys.

Im using exactly the same package (Be Pro 24Mb with a static IP) and have absolutely no complaints. No sign of any traffic shaping and its most definitely unlimited and unmetered.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php will tell you how far you are from your exchange. Be wary though, it only shows the straight line distance and as I found out Im only 1km from the exchange as the crow flies but connected to it with a spaghetti junction of cabling limiting my speed.

This is the only downside to Be, they do an 8Mb service that is unmetered and has no traffic shaping but you cant get a static IP, which as you know I need for work, so I have to pay for the 24Mb connection even though I only get between 5Mb and 8Mb depending on when I sync and what profile Im using. Still, its a cracking service, cheap as chips and I dont really mind paying the extra that much.

Excellent, cheers for that.

Looks like Ill be about 4km from the exchange - as the crow flies - so I guess its a case of wait and see. TBH Im not too fussed about the downspeed, 1.3mb up looks very handy though.

If youre going to make use of statics, a single one is worthless imo. PAT is a hash, and youre tied to home equipment.

I use one for the router and one for the checkpoint firewall, one for mx record, one for a machine on DMZ and another for my wireless guest access. LAN is hidden behind FW public IP

Totally OTT, but its all necessary lab gear!

That was like Swahili to me Mark, sorry :whoops:

Im guessing you were on about the static IP requirement? Its just for remote access to servers etc, so i dont need a new IP authorising all the time.

Mark, a single one is not worthless given that it saves me logging in to anything and everything and keeping a list of 100 or so usernames and passwords. In actual fact thats one of the reasons I chose Be, I just want one static IP, not three, not a group of five, any more than one is utterly useless for my requirements.

Be are excellent and the migration I had from Pipex was painless.

It was very smooth and one the cleanest easiest member websites I have ever used keeping me informed.

I would suggest O2 if you wont get over 16Mb (They do 20Mb as well).  £10 per month gets you up to 16Mb with a 1.3 Upload.  I rather like them, and the only reason I "left" Be was because it was more cost effective because I knew I wasnt going to get over 14Mb.

Edit :: Price is dependent on you having an O2 mobile, either PAYG or Contract.  Otherwise its £15.

Dear god man Ive worked for businesss with less than that!! :)  Wireless guest access - youll hav an amigopod next!

I dont see the point of 1 static I must admit, I just use No-IP which does the job for me perfectly.
