New Intel CPUs and future AMD
on: May 22, 2020, 09:26:38 AM
10K series, a little faster than the previous but really not that hot.

Meanwhile AMD has announced this.

Thoughts?

I think getting three gens out of a architecture is not bad at all, this has been on the cards for some time. It's certainly no worse than Intel has been doing. People are happy to spend £300+ on a graphics card upgrade but not half that for a new motherboard (which is probably going to have other significant improvements like PCIE 4). I don't understand the hostility and certainly wouldn't want to do that bodge of a firmware update.

I know AMD like to try and keep the socket/motherboard going but sometimes you have to to do a jump and I was never cross with them for doing so because of the ROM space they needed.

While Intel are being creative to get increased perfomance and improved thermals they are still stuck. They still have issues shrinking their dyes.
It looks like Intel will loose their contract with Apple as Apple look to move more and more of their devices over to their own chipsets which are also doing better for power, perfomance and thermals. Intel look to be loosing more manufacturers in the laptop space as AMD just nailed that space as well. A number are testing AMD and may be doing the switch and while Apple has probably said no AMD did approach them apparently as well.
Intel messed up on their 5g chipsets as well and the next gen consoles are AMD yet again.

Intel are still making a lot of cash and strong but its clearly going to be taking hit after hit in coming years unless they really sort their s**t out.

AMD is killing it and their roadmap looks strong.

The fact is that modern computers are plenty fast for most tasks, although there are some of us who would like more. There have also been many companies who have, in the past, manufactured conversion kits to allow a new CPU to be put on an old motherboard, saving the expense of replacing the ram and possibly power supply.

An upgrade CPU is a useful idea and allows the manufacturers to keep pumping out older products for those who want to save bit of money. Admittedly they won't get the full performance, the additional extras, but do they need that?

Saw a youtube vid showing how for most people outside of doing editing/streaming or rendering etc You are all good. All just to do with throughput, memory/mobo and gaming graphics card still the big one.

My eldest brother still has one. Trying to run modern games in 4K resolution might break it a bit.

Yeah, and playing online where 120hz refresh rate is bare minimum and 60fps is bare minimum to play well against others.

I upgraded from 2500k.... spent a small fortune, apart from benchmarks it's made no different at all :-(

shouldn't have bothered

It's only worth it for gaming or if you really new architectural features, even then I think a good CPU change has minimal reward still. I know I'm still going to do the same as you knighty!

1440p it still did elite dangerous on full throttle (decent GPU)  But I don't run much game wise on it, tbh my main resolution for gaming atm is 240p  8)

Planet coaster is the only thing I've ran that's really pushed it past breaking point.

I'm sure a lot of it is about lack of optimisation in games, seems devs are less concerned with CPU optimisation as much as GPU these days.

I have a Core I7-3770K. Seems to work fine in most games still.
