Title: New Red Dwarf - anyone else excited?
Post by: Goblin on February 04, 2009, 17:11:50 PM
Rob Llewellyn has been pretty active on Twitter talking about the new Red Dwarf episodes coming to Dave (of all places) in a couple of months. Says it is real old school, classic Dwarf.

3-5 were the best I think. 1 and 2 had good gags but were slow episodes at times.

What makes something a cult is the devotion of its followers or watchers, not their number. An estimated 5 million watched the pilot.

See, thats what happens when people use nondescript thread titles. Id assumed that was about a sequel to the surf movie with Paul Walker :P

I flip between loving 1&2 and 3-5. 6 was ok, 7 was awful and 8 was ok, but very different. Mostly I missed Clare Grogan as Kochanski.

Aye, bit of a let down. Danny just didnt seem comfortable playing cat and the science lab bit just wasnt Red Dwarf at all. Also the fact that theyre doing it all green screen rather than on the cheapo sets kinda kills the greatness.
Title: Re:New Red Dwarf - anyone else excited?
Post by: zpyder on April 10, 2009, 22:14:11 PM
Coulda been better, coulda been worse. There were bits I liked more than the recent series, and bits that were worse, if such a thing were possible.

I dont think they ended it very well and they should have explained a bit better about the 2 hardlight holograms, though I am sure all will be revealed. Well, I am hopeful anyway.

Torrent up now.

Not great, the first 10 mins is literally rehashed jokes from early episodes. The last 10 mins a dodgy continuation from season 8. Danny-JJ doesnt seem to be able to do the accent anymore, but Rob-Ll is pure Kryten.

Better than I expected tbh.

From @bobbyllew on Twitter, there seems to be a general consenus amongst everyone involved that episodes 2&3 are much better.

I think it is hurt by being crammed into 22 minutes, doesnt give the story room to breath (which is exactly why Grant Naylor turned down offers from ITV in the 80s when they were first pitching).

If the story picks up I suspect the first episode will be fine in context and the whole thing will work better when watched all the way through without interruption.

After reading the comments on here I wasnt hopeful at all but having just watched it I think you guys are being way too critical. I think Goblins got it spot on - it felt a bit rushed and crammed into the shorter spot but I thought the content and performances were there. Of course things are different they were always going to be but I thought it still felt like Dwarf and the characters were back - I didnt find the jokes rehashed so much as just in the RD style which frankly Id be annoyed if they werent. Looking forward to 2&3 - might wait and watch them back to back I think that might be more enjoyable.

Heres hoping this spawns a new series.

Aye, I did think the intro and title sequence was true red dwarf.

How long were the old episodes? The ending of part 1 was almost as bad as some of the poorly timed ad breaks on Sky!

It wasnt bad, it wasnt awesome either.  It was lacking funny funny.

Im not sure I like the whole cavernous room star wars cgi effects tbh.  I guess its building up to something, the short time frame really hurt it.

Im glad that Im not the only one who thought it was alright.

Some of the stuff I have been reading about peoples opinions baffles me, already reviewing it and writing the lot off as crap after one 22 minute episode, give me a break!

People even moaning about the canned laughter!? Im glad the canned laughter has gone tbh, if you need an audible que to laugh or find something funny then god help you :yarr:

I think it lacking funny funny isnt too much of bad thing, they need to keep it steady, if they try to be too funny they can fail in massive fashion if they are even slightly off, the Rimmer bit not paying attention coming to mind there.

I not watched it all but What I get is that it was rushed. Some of it add libbed and rushing around with things done in a hurry. I think it would have flowed better and actors more settled with a bit of a longer filming time?

To clarify, Red Dwarf *never* had canned laughter, they had a studio audience which Dave wasnt willing to pay for for these episodes. I miss the laughter because it no longer has those little pauses where the cast is waiting for the laughter to die down.

Will know better in an hour how its going to be.

Maybe all the people on various forums and facebook etc writing it off after last night had a point and on the start of tonights show more foresight than me

Tonights start was pretty lame, I mean come on :gag: but it did pick up I thought, but as it was watching it the lady made a good point red dwarf should be on a ship well said ;)

I guess also, has any extra-terrestrial based sci fi series, ever pulled off the old "back to earth" story arc.

I mean, star trek, the original BSG, and even DR who were pretty weak on earth I felt.
Title: New Red Dwarf - anyone else excited?
Post by: Sweenster on April 11, 2009, 22:39:43 PM
It seems far too reliant on computer graphics and not the writing, the actors or the sets.

It is a cheap money maker, they know any Red Dwarf fan will be tuned in to watch it no matter what but it just isnt the quality it should have been.

I agree about the laughter, alot of the program has always been the cast bouncing off the audience. They played off what made the most laughs and it added an atmosphere to the show.

It feels dead and the writing isnt good enough to hold it up. Only one scene made me laugh and that was just a poke at the use of CG and photos in other programs.

Unless tomorrows episode is suddenly amazing I am worried about this. You can really see how little the actors seem to care about what they are doing, probably due to the cheap rushed nature of it.

I thought tomights episode was a lot better than the first and Danny didnt seem to be struggling to be the cat in this one either. Although I did also mention to my brother that it just seemed wierd them not being on a ship.

I honestly think that the ending could be as ridiculous as them pleading for more life being up to us ie the viewer or some other outrageously rubbish idea. I really hope it isnt :whoops:

I do think that they are going to struggle to wrap this up in 22 minutes, it feels like it has barely got started :|

If they get a new series and they use sets and an audience and have a bit more time to develop a script would it work?

Yeah the laughing is what i noticed first they had no laugh track, i think the show has always had it and without it, its like this.... psychologically weve always had the laughing and without it the jokes must not be as funny.

Quick google search to see if red dwarf is acted infront of an audience which i never thought because the laughing was to repeatively the same....

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=red+dwarf+laugh+track

Think im going to have to download the second part missed it....

One whole scene in pt2 was directly lifted from Bladerunner.

Having just watched both parts back to back, I can say Im firmly in the not as bad as everyone is making out camp, and I dont need audience laughter as a queue (why people still think its canned I dont know...)

In my opinion the green screen doesnt do any favours as the show always worked better off props. I think they all act better off the props too and maybe thats the let down. I certainly dont feel their individual performances themselves are bad, but script definitely needed a bigger injection of FUNNEH in the first two parts, as while there were a few chuckle moments there isnt enough great gags coming out. It was never going to be up to par with the best seasons, but its missing something from that Dwarf factor still. Maybe the third will provide, but I doubt it. Ill still enjoy it for what its worth.

Maybe they arent that bad, but theyre on par with most of the stuff coming out now, and people are just getting tired of things that were really really good, coming back and only being good. And so complain all the more louder?

Dunno why I said canned laughter earlier, I think I read it somewhere else and assumed, then remembered when someone pointed it out that its not that you can hear them laughing in the smeg ups/out oops  then it has been a while since the last series  8-)

I dont quite know why the scene was lifted (its the one with the nose maker working in the cold lab) but there seems to be a lot of nods and mentions of Bladerunner throughout, perhaps Naylor or the writers/cast are big fans?

The final part was much much better, still not upto old standards but it was a good way to finish it off.

Yet more blatant bladerunner nods and a nice bit of dwarfist slapstic.

It should either have been longer or have been a few short episodes. The 3 20+ episodes were nowhere near as satisfying as it should have been.

Found this on wiki

A prime example of this is Red Dwarf; the first six series were shot partly in front of a live audience and, due to special effects scenes, filmed but shown to the audience later. This caused a lot of problems, so Series 7 was filmed without an audience but was shown to one to get live laughter. Series 8 saw the return of the live audience. The shows return, Red Dwarf: Back To Earth will not be using a laugh track though.

I enjoyed the episodes though I do think that if they had shown it as one 70 minute or so special it would have been better.

I still miss the laughter track because for me it adds to the comedic atmosphere of the show not as a queue to laugh.

Whats up with the Cat doing the origami things like the bladerunner guy?

Have to agree. The bladerunner scene was a bit too blatant IMO. Overall it could have had a bit more script work done but it hasnt been bad.

Hopefully the DVD release will give us the option to watch all three episode in one with out breaks, this alone should improve it quite a bit.

OK, watched back-to-back it actually is fairly good. I think it would be great *if* it was a kind of "Red Dwarf is coming back, heres a special to get you in the mood". As someone said earlier, it came off more as a Comic Relief special than a proper episode.

@bobbyllew said that the first episode has viewing figures of 2.2 million (the highest Dave has ever had is ~1 million), so there may be incentive to make a "proper" new series.

Loved the Blade Runner references though, nice nod to the sci-fi crowd, though actually spelling it out in the episode laid it on a little thick.

Agree, needs proper sets and a live audience.

It left me wanting them to leave it well alone, and let it die in peace. I was on the side of the creator :(

Though Ep 3 did pull it back a bit.
